Guestbook comments from the owner

The house, the location, and the weather all played their significant parts in making our week together a memorable outing. This holiday away from our crowded daily lives in Silicon Valley offered opportunities to relax, dream, decompress, and, most importantly, time to reconnect with our loved ones.

We were initially concerned about the specter of inclement weather. Parts of Kauai are renowned for their prodigious amounts of rainfall but, at least while we were there, the heaviest precipitation of our trip was limited to the nighttime. That’s not to say that we didn’t encounter daytime rain; it’s just that when it came, it was light and usually lasted only a short time.

For our purposes, the location of this property was perfect. We all spent some time on nearby beaches; how could you come to Hawaii and not? At other times, we went exploring, either at the shops in the neighboring communities or over the lesser-traveled roadways in the area to find out what lay around the next corner. Both were delightful.

The house itself provides a wonderful balance of openness and coziness. We could wander from one area to another, depending on our needs at the time. The group consisted of nine people on an extended-family vacation, ranging from grandparents and parents to two teenagers, a pre-teen, and a two-year old. We had plenty of room to spread out, giving each of us our own space or, occasionally, we would find ourselves in ad hoc groups, constructing jigsaw puzzles or formulating a plan for the day.

To relax in the hot tub at the end of a hard day shopping or beachcombing or to take advantage of one of the decks’ serenity to just meditate, surrounded by subtle background sounds of wind, birds, and the Pacific Ocean crashing relentlessly into the nearby cliffs; ahhh, this is the life!

The home was exactly what we needed for our family vacation of 6 adults & 4 children.

  • 5 of 5

We especially enjoyed having beach chairs, boogie boards, surf boards since we went to one of beaches every day. The kitchen was were equipped for making our meals. The pool table was an added attraction for all. The parents & their children should be encouraged to use the bedrooms on the lower level - leaving the upper level master suite for the grandparents.

The on site contact was very prompt when we had any questions.

We had a most enjoyable family vacation. Thank you, Lia for helping me make this visit so memorable.

Fabulous North Shore Home!

  • 5 of 5

We left yesterday after spending a wonderful week at Whale Hale. We were 2 families with our adult children (8 people) coming together for an annual vacation. This was our first visit to Kauai and this house was a perfect fit for us! The rooms were wonderfully decorated and equipped, the kitchen large and well stocked with spices, condiments, and other cooking necessary items. I loved having 2 washers and 2 dryers to use to keep towels and linens fresh during the week. The views were spectacular and the outdoor spaces ample and comfortable! We are very active vacationers and took advantage of the proximity to Queens Bath, Hideaway Beach, Makei Golf course, Hannelei, surfing and zip lining. Also close to good shopping and restaurants. Coming from Florida and Tennessee we were concerned about the lack of air conditioning, but the house stayed cool with plenty of cross ventilation and ample fans, even for a warm July week. We also enjoyed the Swim Spa! The Pool table and ping pong table were big hits. The dining room was spectacular and perfect for all 8 of us to dine. It was a perfect and lovely week; thank you for sharing your home with us.

If there was anything negative to mention, we were visited twice by the neighborhood patrol and warned for our music being too loud at 9:20 PM (I'm 56 years old and didn't think it was loud) and for leaving the trash can curbside too late on the day of pickup. So, take heed of the quiet times and neighborhood rules noted in the information book on the kitchen counter.

Mahalo!

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

There are no words to describe what a wonderful time our family had at Whale Hale. It was a dream come true and an answer to prayer to be able to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary at this lovely home that met every need. There were 8 of us, ranging in age from 7 to 72. Everyone was beyond happy with this home. It is gorgeous, and the pictures on the VRBO website do not exaggerate.

The practical: kitchen is amazing with great work space, two dishwashers, 1 1/2 refrigerators (full-size and one small, under-the-counter), and a good supply of pots & pans, dishes, cups & glasses. Downstairs there are two washers & dryers, which were so helpful in keeping up with beach wear and towels. There's a Foodland grocery store maybe 1 1/2 miles away, so grocery shopping was very convenient. Everything was clean, neat, well-organized, and well cared for.

Bedrooms range from adequate (the two small twin rooms) to exceptional (the master king suite). The second king suite, sharing a deck and jacuzzi/Canadian pool access with the master king suite, and the upstairs queen suite with a large deck overlooking the golf course & mountains are lovely. Each of the three suites has its own flat screen TV.

The living space is wonderful, wide-open, and spacious. The kitchen opens to the living room with huge couch and flat screen in one direction, the dining room with glass overlooking the ocean in the other. The second living room with couch and full-size pool table share a level with the dining room, just a couple of steps down from the living room/kitchen level. The dining room has a great table that easily seats 10 people.

The deck off the dining room/second living room runs the length of the house, has very comfortable furniture, and overlooks the ocean. My 7-year-old granddaughter and I watched the sunrise there every morning.

The garage has a wonderful array of sand chairs, sand shoes, flippers, a couple of snorkels, a beach umbrella, plus a ping pong table. There are great beach towels available, in addition to the high-quality bath towels in each bathroom.

Note: This is not a handicapped accessible home, if you have someone in your party who cannot walk, because the kitchen and living area, plus queen suite, are on the second floor, with the other four bedrooms and laundry room on the entry level.

For our family, this was a perfect choice, and we were grateful to be able to have time together in this exquisite setting.

Fabulous Home in Princeville

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent 2 fabulous weeks at Lia's Whale Hale home in Princeville. I would highly recommend this home for your stay on Kauai. Lia was excellent to work with and answered all my questions. Her property manager was on top of everything. The home was beautiful and well-designed with 3 suites and 2 additional bedrooms with twin beds. We appreciated the double washer/dryers and the double dishwashers! The home now has a hot tub/pool which was a hit with my grandchildren. We loved being on the North Shore because there is so much to do. After arriving, we stocked up at the Costco near the airport. There is Foodland 5 minutes near the house that had everything we needed. We loved Ke'e Beach and the hike along the Napali Coast (but get to the parking lot before 8 a.m. to get parking!) We did lots of snorkeling at Tunnel's Beach (parking at the Haena State Park beach). We enjoyed good food and lots of shaved ice at Jo Jo's in Hanalei. We spent most beach days at Hanalei Bay and Kalihiwai Beach (great waves). There is fun tubing with Back Country Adventures and many luaus to choose from. We enjoyed a helicopter trip and seeing the entire island. We over packed so just bring bathing suits, sundresses, and T-shirts & shorts. We love Kauai and look forward to coming back soon!

This property is open, light, spacious, cozy and filled with good vibes.

  • 5 of 5

My family love staying at Whale Hale. There were 10 of us (three generations)and there was so much space for us all to "be", that if never felt crowded. The kids (and I) really enjoyed the hot tub/pool, the sunrise views on one side of the house and sunsets on the other. I opened the sliding doors of my bedroom every morning to meditate with the sounds of the ocean crashing below.

The house was well equipped with everything we needed to feel at home, and by the end, we wished it was our home. We were all sad to leave.

Thank you Lia McDonald and family!

A fantastic home away from home

  • 5 of 5

I only wish that our real home had 2 washers, 2 dryers, and 2 dishwashers like Whale Hale… something to think about for a future renovation :) But seriously, it is something that most vacation rentals do not have but that is a fantastic convenience - especially if staying with a larger group and to deal with wet towels and swimsuits from trips to the beach or the awesome swim tub.

On the topic of the swim tub… it is brand new and had just been installed before our visit. For those unfamiliar with such things, it is about 2-3 times the size of a typical hot tub and allows for swimming against a current produced by the jets at one end (or those jets can be turned off). Although it is not really meant to be kept as hot as a hot tub, the temperature can be raised to hot tub levels and there are a wide variety of seats and jet combinations to keep many adults and children happy at the same time. And all just steps outside the master bedrooms and with a view of the Pacific.

Our children - aged 11 and 13 - loved the house and made regular use of the swim tub, pool table, and ping pong table. As well, we all loved all of the extras made available to guests including boogie boards, snorkelling equipment, beach chairs, sunscreen, etc.

And the location is fantastic. If you’re thinking of renting this house, do yourself a favour and search for “Whale Hale” on Google Maps and turn on the Satellite View. You’ll see the great neighbourhood and the proximity to the signature 7th hole on the Makai Golf Club and the Queen’s Bath set on the rocks below. The neighbouring empty lot is the perfect spot for spectacular views and breath-taking sunsets. The parking lot that you see at the entrance to the cul-de-sac is the lot for people visiting the Queen’s Bath - a nice little hike (a bit slippery after any rain) down to the base of the cliffs where you can observe the powerful surf and, when graced with the right surf and tide conditions (as we were one day out of the five that we visited), take a swim in the Queen’s Bath. You have to be very careful as the surf and tide are often too powerful and high to allow it but even when you can’t swim there, the views and sounds of crashing surf are truly memorable.

The owner, Lia, was a pleasure to deal with and responded promptly to all of the questions that we had both before and after arriving. We can’t wait to return to this little slice of paradise and would have no reservations in returning to Whale Hale!
