A complete beachfront home with three bedrooms, three full bathroom, several decks and terraces front and back, with a pool in the walled rear yard. The lot is about 10,000 sq ft.
Boating, swimming, bird watching, and fishing are nearby. The beach is public, but is mostly sparsely occupied and peaceful, except on long weekends and holidays when it becomes quite lively.
Local urban culture ranges from the fishing villages of Chelem and Chuburna, with bars and restaurants ranging from basic to excellent, frequent local festivals, and day-to-day shopping, to Merida, a city of about 1M, 45 minutes away.
Merida offers beautiful historical neighbourhoods and shopping districts, art galleries and museums, wonderful restaurants, professional sports venues, and all the amenities and services of other modern north American cities, including a world-class hospital and Wal-Mart.
Once you leave our short local road, which is hard packed sand, these destinations are reachable via paved roads and highways.
Within 150km are several Mayan ruins, wilderness areas, and cenotes (beautiful, natural underground pools for hot days).
We live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We visited friends in Chelem a few years ago and decided it would be a wonderful place to build a 'winter escape home'. We are extremely pleased with the house, but given that most of our friends and family (including three little grandchildren!) are in Western Canada, we do not expect to spend more than two months a year there. To us, it makes all kinds of sense for others to enjoy the house and its setting when we can't.
John and Carol Andrew purchased this house in 2011
As we expect is the case with most people who buy vacation properties, we did not search the entire world looking for the 'perfect spot'. Our visit a few years ago convinced us that it would be difficult to do significantly better, so we bought the lot and built the house.
Although we are extremely pleased with how the house turned out, it is the setting that appeals the most. We have white sand and green water for our front yard, charming fishing villages to the east and west, the substantial town of Progreso 15 minutes to east, the wonderful City of Merida 40 minutes away, and historic and natural treasures within easy driving distance. Our neighbors include generally happy and helpful locals and a significant proportion of ex-pats, mostly from the US and Canada.
The house is as it seems in the pictures. I believe it is four years old and it's an architectural delight. It is in Chelem and it is right on the beach - absolutely gorgeous.
Five of us spent nearly two weeks in Casa Garceta and had a wonderful, relaxing time. The days would get hot and the pool was great to use in the morning to cool off and relax. Our 4 & 6 year old children loved being able to swim in the mornings and then walk the beach for shells and swim in the afternoons.
The home itself was spacious, airy and clean. Sliding doors abound and there's a great breeze in the afternoons that moves through the house. Cable TV is provided and works well. Be advised - while there is Internet & Wi-Fi, the speed is very modest. We brought our Apple TV down thinking we could stream movies for the kids and the Internet was not sufficient to do streaming. We should have realized this up front. It took us four days of relaxing and having fun before we realized and remembered that we had cable TV!
The home is located ~40 minutes from Merida and ~30 minutes from Progreso. You can see the cruise ships on clear days from the home.
The propery manager, David, is excellent and extremely responsive.
Our family had a great time at Casa Garceta and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway in a quaint village.
Maison très récente et super bien placée , juste un peu dur a trouvé la première fois mais après tout vas bien .Avec plein de pélicans sympa de prendre un petit dej avec les oiseaux juste a coté .Les gens super sympa a coté , nous retournerons surement !!!!
What a beautiful home. Any everything about it makes you feel like to you at home in paradise. Due to the weather, we weren't able to enjoy the pool much. On those sunny days (3) we did however hang out around the pool. Everything you need or want is within a few minutes. Great location and fantastic accommodations. We loved it so much....bought our own place.
Owners were great to work with and the property manager was a great help as well.
Would highly recommend for anyone wanting to visit the Yucatan
What a great place!!! We had an incredible time at this house. We were in Chelem during holy week. It was an exciting time to be in the town, it really came alive at night. We felt very safe, and evryone was very helpful and nice! The house is very well stocked and had just about everything we needed. We traveled with 2 couples, and we were excited to venture out. The house was so great with the pool and the beach that we spent more time relaxing at the house than anything! We ventured to Merida, Progreso and Celestun. We even got in a visit to some beautiful cenotes! I would highly recommend this house, it was perfect!
A fantastic House - We planned to stay in Progreso to see the sights and visit Merida while being away from the crowds BUT the house was so well equipped and in a great spot we ended up spending most of our time relaxing in the pool, on the beach or eating seafood. We could happily have spent longer here.
The photos of this beautiful modern home do not do it justice. The views from the many decks and the large terrace are stunning—you are located on a sandy beach facing northwards right on the Gulf of Mexico. From the front terrace we watched a local fisherman set his nets, many species of birds, and one day some dolphins swam past us! The sunset is glorious and the view of the night sky off the second floor decks with all the stars is magnificent. We were fortunate enough to experience a full moon during our stay enabling us to take a stroll down the beach at night that was so well lit that we didn’t need to use a flashlight. This is a spacious, comfortable, clean, and very private home. If you want a resort stay with those sorts of amenities this is not the place. However, if you want to stay somewhere where you can hear the surf all day and night while enjoying your private view of the ocean this is it. During 3 weeks at this house we had very few folks stroll by to interrupt our views and relaxation. The back of this house has high walls with a locked metal gate, which provide privacy and security as you enjoy the patio and pool. The pool has a beautiful waterfall and different levels which provided welcome relief from the heat of November. Surprisingly, the Mexican winter was very hot except during a few days of Norte, when we experienced some wind & rain, which provided an alternate ocean view which we enjoyed comfortably through the many large windows this house provides. We never felt unsafe here, as this is a very peaceful area of Mexico. Also, the house is equipped with a security system with a lot of security lighting outside the house. You will need to rent a vehicle so that you can travel to nearby Merida, or drive through amazing villages and towns to view ruins, cenotes, and haciendas. The home is large enough to accommodate several people (ours was a group of 7 adults) without feeling crowded while also enjoying some shared space. The owners are very approachable for information about the house and area, as is their property manager.
The area along the beach between the fishing villages of Chelem and Chuburna is a strip of vacation homes between the Gulf of Mexico and a paved two-lane highway. The majority of homes are unoccupied except during the summer vacation season and holidays. Permanent residents, mostly ex-pats, are the minority. The land between Progreso and Chuburna is essentially a large sandbar, with a body of shallow saltwater referred to as the Ria, lying south of the highway. The Ria is home to an abundance of water birds: egrets, herons, pelicans, storks, etc.
A few minutes east of Chelem is Progreso, a port city of approximately 50,000 people. Directly south of Progreso about 20 minutes, is Merida, a city of about 1 million people. It was founded in 1542 and grew wealthy as a result of the production of henequen. Learn more about it here:
In spite of its long history, it is a modern growing city with sophisticated shopping, cultural amenities, and health services.
The north Yucatán Peninsula offers historic and archaeological treasures such as restored henequen haciendas and Mayan ruins; natural features such as the many cenotes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cenotes); and various religious festivals.
