Hello, we are the Gissendanner family, living in Goose Creek, SC. Spending a lot of time in coastal areas , we were attracted to the change in scenery in the mountains of Western, NC. In the summer of 2008 I stood outside under the balcony at the Lake Lure Inn, sipping my coffee and admiring the beauty of Lake Lure. Later that afternoon while walking along the Lake with our two small children we began to talk about the adventure of building a log cabin in this peaceful place. The next weekend we returned to Lake Lure and began the process of looking at property.
Kim Gissendanner purchased this house in 2008
We came across this community that our home is built in quite by accident and after driving around not knowing where we were headed we drove by the property that soon purchased. We met a couple who were building the cabin next door. We immediately realized that there was a business connection from a few years before. Since then there has been an almost family like bond and s divine intervention would have it this became the place for us to build. For us it's perfect. Just far away from home to get away yet not so far as to make it a long drive. The distance we travel to the cabin let's us decompress and unwind so that we are on 'mountain time' when we arrive. We love this place in all seasons. The fall colors are spectacular and summers here are cooler and comfortable. On more than one occasion we've experienced a white Christmas.
Our cabin is located just 10 minutes from Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. Outdoor activities are everywhere and there is plenty of events going on year round. When you want a more peaceful visit you are far enough up the mountain and away from the main road where you can simply enjoy doing nothing. Today I enjoy stepping out on my back deck and admiring the beauty of the surroundings. You can feel the peace in the air. At night we s go out onto the back deck with lights off. Lifting our heads up we experience what we refer to as 'the big picture' (more stars than you can ever imagine.)
Our family enjoyed wonderful stay at Laurelwood Lodge during the Thanksgiving Holidays. The kitchen was very clean and was well equipped to handle cooking for a my large group with hungry appetites. It was great to have a gas oven and stove to cook with. After the Thanksgiving meal we enjoyed sitting on the back deck relaxing. Sorry to say we won't make it this year. It's a wonderful, quite and peaceful place to be.
We had a wonderful time at Laurelwood Lodge. I had originally decided to take my children to Asheville for Spring Break. It quickly turned into family members driving and flying in to join us. The Gissendanner's had no problem accommodating a last minute booking for us. Directions were clear and Kim even checked in on us to make certain we had everything we needed. The cabin was clean and spacious. My children enjoyed playing in the game room downstairs and hiking the streams and waterfall in the Riverbend community. We saw a lot of wildlife including many deer, which thrilled my boys. I enjoyed my morning coffee in the rocking chairs on the large deck overlooking a small brook, pasture, and wooded area. It was beautiful, calm, and relaxing. We grilled and cooked at the cabin and were pleased to find a kitchen stocked with good cookware. To our delighted surprise we even found a deck of pinochle cards in a kitchen drawer. I cannot think of a better way to enjoy friends and family. The pictures do not do the cabin justice.
The cabin is 2 miles from a grocery store for anything we may need as well as close to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. We drove into Asheville to the Biltmore for a day. The trip was not long, it took around 35 - 40 minutes, and it was a beautiful drive.
My only regret is that we did not stay longer! We will definitely book this cabin again in the future.
Thank you Kim for a wonderful VBRO experience.
The cabin was exactly like the pic posted. There was enough room for my family to spread out during our Thanksgiving visit. Everyone loved the hot tub and game room. The kitchen was very well equipped....we were able to fix Thanksgiving dinner for 9 people with no problems with pans or casserole dishes!! It was so quite and peaceful at the cabin but was close enough to Biltmore house and Chimney Rock Village for visits and shopping. But the most important thing is the attentiveness of the owner....Kim. We were staying during the time of the Party Rock fire and of course were concerned about our holiday. But no worries. Kim kept me posted on the conditions and even let me know several good options I could take if I needed to cancel or leave early. That was a huge relief for me. Thank goodness we were able to stay our entire time and enjoyed every minute of it. We will definitely be going back!! Thanks Kim for all you did to make our Thanksgiving holiday wonderful!
I was so glad to have found this cabin. I was looking for a place that slept 10 people comfortably! It was perfect for my October annual Book Club getaway. My members elected to stay in a wood cabin and this was the perfect place!
The cabin was clean and cozy and had two nice sizes porches in the front and back of the property with nice rocking chairs. We held our meeting inside and outside the cabin. Very quiet surroundings.
It was also well equipped and had enough entertainment for all. Being minutes away to a great supermarket made it easy to do a little grocery shopping. My members, including myself, were very happy! The owner was very attentive and helpful and was just a call away when we had a question. 5 thumbs up! I would definitely stay here again!
House was plenty big for 4 couple, owner very helpful, only thing we didn't know was the unpaved road going up to the house, cars really dirty from that. House clean, back deck very spacious
We have stayed at Laurelwood several times, and it just gets better! Relaxing, comfortable, homey but just enough extra touches to make it special.
This time we had 3 generations in the house, which worked fine for us. Easy to arrange accommodations for babies, toddlers, kids & tweens, as well as adults. Everyone loves the hot tub! Pool table, foosball, movies, games....
Rooms are well appointed so no need to bring linens, etc., unless you need lots of towels! (we did since we had so many people!)
You can cook or grill, or visit local restaurants. Great place to do absolutely nothing! Or you can sightsee, shop, hike, kayak...
The owners are helpful & accommodating. I can't stay enough about how much we love coming here!
Enjoyed staying here. The owner was terrific in offering assistance and tourist info. A quick phone call and we had an answer. We had a group of adults and had a marvelous time in the great room and on the porches. The had just finished staining and renovations to the exterior and it looked beautiful. The place is well maintained and very clean inside and out. The grocery is just a short 5 minute drive yet you feel like you're really secluded when you are up at the house.
