About this property

Shamrock House:Historic Log Cabin, Servant's Quarters, Cottage with trout stream

Please watch the video! It's a beautiful introduction to this property! Link for video https://youtu.be/V8db_WzCen4
Minimum number of nights for rental is seasonal with summer and holidays being peak. Select calendar dates for requirements.
The creek that borders the property is approx. 10-15ft across, constantly flowing, good for fishing, wading, or just cooling off!)
The cabin is part of the South Carolina Heritage Corridor!

Former family compound built circa 1925 consisting of 3 cabins:
Standard Booking - Includes The Shamrock House (main cabin), Bunk House, & Trout House - Sleeps up to 24 (2 additional if using mattresses provided under beds in Bunk House and Trout House)
Standard Pricing as shown on VRBO is for ALL 3 cabins! Contact me for questions on sleeping arrangements for your group.
Peek season rentals during the summer, fall, and holidays are typically 1 week in duration.

Main Cabin - Sleeps 6 adults comfortably (1 additional child could sleep in loft area)
The Bunk House - Sleeps 7
The Trout Stream House - sleeps up to 10

The property has an interesting history. We believe it was the first home in the area to have electricity (powered by a water-wheel at the back of the property, some remnants of that structure remain). The home was used as a place for travelers passing thru the area to stop and get a good night's rest. Of course, every old home has a ghost story. The weeping sound of Nancy the Ghost is claimed to be heard on occasion, we can’t confirm or deny her presence...but we are pretty sure Nancy is a friendly gal and her "weeping" is just the sounds of the old house creaking.
We can confirm that former US President LBJ was a guest. He liked it and we believe you will as well. For details, contact Scott.

Location: Yes...it is in the mountains, not rolling foothills. Ceasar's Head and Table Rock are just a few miles down the road from The Shamrock House, as well as many, many waterfalls, hiking, biking, tubing, whitewater rafting...you name it!
For recreation on the property, we have a basketball goal, a game of horseshoes, and several open meadows where the kids can play whatever sport they enjoy (just bring your gear)...or just relax in a hammock!

The property is located in the Rocky Bottom area of Sunset, Upcountry, South Carolina, approximately halfway between Pickens, South Carolina and Brevard, North Carolina on Highway 178 (an easy 30 minute drive to Brevard). The cabin is approximately seven miles north of Highway 11, the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway.

Drive time from Atlanta or Charlotte ~ 2.5 hrs
from Asheville ~ 1 hr

Special Features: Equipped kitchens, outdoor (park style) grills, basketball goal, horseshoe pits, picnic tables, smart TV & Wifi in main cabin, trout stream, wildlife (beavers, turkey, deer, bear and other critters).

Dates Available: Year round.

Disclaimer: This property is "in the sticks." Although there are convenience stores a short drive down the road, and small towns within a 20-25 minute drive, please be aware that this area is remote. The main cabin is almost 100 yrs old and all 3 cabins are rustic. We work hard to keep everything dust-free and clean, but the nature of the property (and mother nature around the property) can change things overnight. Be advised, the Shamrock house is NOT disability friendly, some of the outdoor steps around the property are natural stone and if you have mobility issues this property may not be a good fit.

Awesome
A great weekend. We did an amateur ghost investigation and enjoyed a nice place to relax. Morning coffee on the porch was a blessing.

Great for a group
We stayed with a group of moms and daughters (all ages 5) for our annual retreat. This place had a lot of rustic appeal. We felt the kitchen (particularly the trout house one) was very well stocked. The girls had a great time exploring the grounds and have all requested that we go back to this location again!

Update description, make repairs
We did not find the Shamrock House property to be as well-maintained and equipped for visitors as the advertisement led us to believe. On the positive side, the main house is dramatically rustic, with a “great room” that is ideal for gatherings of people. The heating system does a good job (at least down into the 50s F) at keeping the main room warm. On the downside, a real woodburning fireplace was a main consideration for our winter get-together. The website asserts that there are fireplaces, but in fact they are shams fitted with unvented(!) gas logs; the chimneys are sealed. The remote control for the gas logs was missing, and we elected not to use them. Upstairs bedrooms get too cold at night unless the heat is left on and doors are left partially open. No extra blankets. The TV and DVD player were not usable due to a lack of suitable cables. The kitchen in the main house is not suitable for serious cooking for any number of guests. The electrified woodstove lacks proper instructions and has controls that are only partially functional. The dishes are Melamine, not supposed to go into a microwave or dishwasher. No practical way to wash dishes that won’t fit into the dishwasher. At least one fire extinguisher has low pressure and would be useless in case of fire,Shower valves in both bathrooms are disintegrating.

Roomy home for large family gatherings!
Property description very accurate. Was rustic for sure, but in a good way. Communication with host was great, he was quick to respond and very helpful. Great location and very spacious for large family gatherings. Fire pit was put to use! Recommend bringing chairs for additional outdoor seating around fire.

Weekend mountain getaway
We stayed for the weekend to fish & kayak at local lakes. This property was perfect for our weekend family trip. We had already read the property description and reviews and were prepared for the mountain landscape between the cabins, cellular service, etc. We were looking for an authentic rustic log cabin experience and the beautiful main cabin is just that. We loved the wide wrap around porch, the fire pits, of course the intriguing history of the cabin. We did experience some interesting activity and plan to return in the future!

Great memories in a beautiful location
The Shamrock, Bunkhouse, and Trout House were a great location for our family/friend reunion. The Trout House was perfect as the quiet house for little kids and was close to the beautiful meadows where we walked and played games. I am glad we brought bug spray for the evening games in the field. The Main House was the gathering spot at night and had a unique charm. A few of us even experienced Nancy playing with their hair or flickering the lights at night.

Family stay
We had plenty of room. But steep steps between parking and houses was undesirable. Locks were not very secure. Kitchen better in trout house than main house was hindering for meal planning. Light bulb out in bunk house. Then a Light came on in night by itself so we think there is a wiring issue. Groups traveling should not be expected to carry trash with them. I appreciate the exception made for us. We had packed cars. It was noisy due to lots of motorcycles in area!! We really enjoyed the fire pit and wood supply. The appliances were great. The air worked great. WiFi was very good for most of us. There was a mouse in main house one night. Loved the big front porch but needed more seats for family grouping.we used our camp chairs.

What A Perfect Family Vacation
We had 18 and did not feel crowded. Hiking up and down the stream and playing in the cool was stellar. The kitchen was great at the Trout House for all to gather for meals. Nearby Sliding Rock and tubing and trails kept us happy. I will bring a big cooking pot next time!

Perfect place for a large group
I turned 70 years old in November 2023 and I wanted to invite 20 of my closest friends to help me celebrate. I also wanted it to be near Lake Jocassee in Salem, SC. The Shamrock House fit the bill perfectly. 16 guests ended up attending for 3 nights. We had a blast! Everyone found a comfortable bed and the 2 kitchens were perfect for cooking our meals. The main room in the cabin was perfect for a music room for our guitar players. We took advantage of the fire pit outside every night. The owner Scott helped me get a truckload of firewood from a local tree company for a very reasonable price. The load lasted all 3 nights with some left over.) Plenty of parking with extra out front. Can't say enough about the owner Scott. Very responsive and helpful with all my questions. All the rooms were clean and there was plenty of kitchen pots and pans. We were able to rent two pontoon boats and spent Friday and Saturday on Lake Jocassee - the cleanest, most pristine lake in SC. This is a must while your up there. Another must do is the short drive to the Sassafras Mountain Observation Tower. This is a great place for sunrise and sunset photos. Again I can't say enough about the owner Scott. He was very responsive to all my questions and concerns. It was a flawless, seamless experience. I hope to return soon.

Great family retreat
Property is excellent for activities and had plenty of room for all the family. The place is rustic and has that feeling of being at camp in the mountains. If you are expectingh that new mountain rental cabin then this is not it but it is nice has great WiFi, satellite tv, and perfect for us. Having 3 separate areas was nice for our big family. We enjoyed this property and hope to return again.

Shamrock House
It was a great place and was perfect for the amount of people we had staying there. It is a beautiful area. The cabins were neat and clean. Nothing major at all wrong except the online video is a little outdated as far as the area where the benches are...they were not usable and one rotted board outside one of the doors that we had to be careful of but i let the owners know. Definitely give it 5 stars and would recommend it to others!!

Family Stay for Pretty Place Chapel Wedding
We stayed at Shamrock during the events of our daughters wedding at Pretty Place Chapel Sept 2023. The location was a bit off the beaten path but it worked out perfectly for our family. The area in general is remote. There is no quick trip to the grocery so it's important to plan. However, this is one of the great things about the location. This property is great for guests who really enjoy the outdoors and also have an appreciation for history. Having three cabins was nice also, and allowed the bride and the bridesmaids to use the Trout House for getting ready prior to the wedding without keeping everyone else up late at night (the wedding was at Sunrise). That night after the wedding, we were able to come back to the main house and relax, breath a sigh of relief and enjoy time together as we sat around the fire, eating, drinking and enjoying everyone's company. The groom is very outdoorsy and loves fishing and anything to do with animals, plants and nature, so he took right to the place. A couple of suggestions when staying here: Bring some GOOD flashlights. It's very dark and we found them very handy when going between the cabins. Bring camping chairs if you have a larger group and want to enjoy a night out at the fire pit. Thank you for letting our family enjoy this property and for allowing us to go back in time and stay in this very historic house. My husband and I slept in Nancy's room. She was quiet for the most part and pretty much stayed to herself.;-)

The property was absolutely beautiful except for the driveway and walkways were trip hazards. The porch can not be used at all. Someone is going to get very hurt. The place was not cleaned very well at all. Hair left in beds so bedding wasnt washed in bunk house. I could go on honestly but im not going to waste my time.

Good cabin in the wood's.
This is a good cabin in the woods with a lot of activity available, if you like outdoors stuff. The main cabin is likely haunted and 4 separate people had ghostly encounters so know that going in. Other than that it's a great place.

My wife and I are the proud parents of the most precious gift from God, our son Nolan. We love to travel when our schedules allow. Sharon is a dental hygienist and I work as an engineer. We both grew up in Augusta, GA and love the outdoors!

Why they chose this property

My life-long dream has always been to own a cabin in the mountains. I literally searched for years, and never could find a place that "checked all of the boxes"...until I found The Shamrock House. We fell in love with the charm and history of the property, and look forward to creating memories at this wonderful place. We are forever indebted to the previous owner, who renovated the buildings and grounds to bring the property back to its former glory, and now you have an opportunity to enjoy the results.

What makes this property unique

It is truly unique. The grounds cover 10 acres bordered by Rocky Bottom Creek and the Jocassee Gorges Heritage Preserve. There are extensive stone walls and walks laid down in the 1920's and many specimen sized trees. Many different wild flowers can be seen throughout out the growing season including rare Oconee Bells and Trillium's. The main cabin is constructed of cedar logs with American Chestnut paneling and floors. The extra large porch of the main cabin has hand made tables, chairs and swings by local artisan Bob McCall. The Trout Stream House has great views of the Bear Meadow and Rocky Bottom Creek. Locals tell tales of Nancy the Ghost who makes herself known from time to time in the main cabin (seems to be only when the adults have had a drink or two!). Maybe yes, maybe no. And, President Lyndon Johnson liked the place well enough to spend some time at The Shamrock House himself. The location is such that one can be on the Foothills Trail in less than five minutes and at Lake Keowee or Jocassee in 30 minutes, and also Brevard or Pickens in about the same time.
