Perfect quiet getaway from city life!

We loved this place so much - sun and quiet and desert scapes and hot tub under the stars and cool vintage stuff and centrally located. An amazing stay we will never forget:)

Perfect desert getaway with great views, hot tub & easy access to park

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4 had a wonderful time staying at Mark's Joshua Tree guest house located right by the park entrance. The house, which is furnished with fun mid-century decor, was very clean and well-appointed with a great record collection and lots of fun retro games for the kids. The views of the mountains and Joshua Trees from the house are spectacular, and the hot tub under the stars after a day of hiking was simply divine. A truly magical place. Great communication with the host throughout. We will definitely be back!

Poor customer service

  • 1 of 5

Arrived at property about 10pm on Friday evening. I had no instructions from the renter about how to access the house. I tried calling the owner three times and the last time it just went to voicemail. Eventually another couple emerged from the other house who opened the gate for me (I was not told that there was a remote to open the gate, or that the road to the house was unpaved). I have a small sports coupe and it was very difficult getting up the road and up the driveway. I did not know where the keys to the guest house were, and only after 10 minutes of searching did the other renters tell me I could look in the grill for the keys and the gate remote.

To make matters worse, the gate remote did not work, so after a long day in the park I came back to the house only to find the gate would not open and the other renters were not there. I ended up climbing over the fence (fortunately I am fit enough to do so) to enter, leave, and then re-enter the house that day. No other renters appeared so I had this as my only recourse to access the house.

Finally, this morning when I woke up, I discovered the largest bed was covered with ants. Fortunately I had fallen asleep on one of the smaller beds, but I have no idea how ants found their way into the house. I searched everywhere and did the best I could to clean the guest house, but I can only imagine what would have happened to me if I had slept in it. As a result of my frustration, I woke at sunrise, cleaned up, and got out of Joshua Tree as soon as I could.

I am not an inflexible person, but this tested the limits of my understanding and patience. I would like at least a partial (if not full) refund for my stay. I have also emailed the owner to notify him of this terrible experience.

Owner's Response: I am very sorry that you did not thoroughly enjoy your stay. I was on the east coast the day of your arrival and did not realize that I had no cell service where I was staying. I was not expecting you until the next day and as there was no communication from you at all prior to your 10pm arrival had not realized my error. Fortunately you only had to wait 10 minutes to gain access to the property. When I spoke with you the next day you did not seem too upset with that minor inconvenience. I urged you to contact me by email if you had any other issues during your stay. I did not hear from you again until a day after your stay ended and as such had no oppotunity to help you with any issues you were having. I responded to you through VRBO offering you a partial refund and received no response at all except for this poor review which appeared over a week after my offer. to date there have been 24 Reviews giving the property 5 stars, 1 review of 4 stars, and then your 1 star review. This alone should signify that I strive to provide a superior level of customer service. The listing indicates that the access is by car and that the property is on a well-maintained dirt road. As to your reported problem with the gate opener it appeared to be working fine when checked after your departure. It would have been best for you to contact me for help when you were having having the problem rather than climbing over the fence as I could likely have walked you through it. There can be ants during the hot weather in the desert and although we regularly spray around the perimeter of the house they can show up, particularly if food or water sources are left open in the house. My housekeeper did not report seeing any ants after your deparure. It is regreattable that I have to go into this detail in this public forum but the nature and tone of your review requires a response. If we both had better communications before and during your stay I believe it would have been much more enjoyable for you.

Comfortable, Nice View, Convenient and a Gracious Host

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I spent 2 nights at this wonderful home. It was clean comfortable and in a nice location. The hot tub was great after hiking in the park. The house was only about 10 minutes from the park entrance and right up the street from the town of Joshua Tree and its nice restaurants. We really enjoyed the vintage records, and just hanging out on the patio. Even though there are other houses close buy, you had great privacy, and a clear view up and down the valley. Mark, made sure we had everything we needed for a great stay!!

The property is located on a well-maintained dirt road in a relatively sparsely populated neighborhood just a half mile away from the village of Joshua Tree. Although just 2 hours drive from Los Angeles you will find Joshua Tree to be worlds away. Joshua Tree is a beautiful area that attracts artists and musicians and outdoor enthusiasts from around the world to make it their home. The community actively supports the arts and tourism and environmental issues. Visitors will find the locals to be an extremely interesting and friendly lot. The west entrance to the amazing 800,000 acre Joshua Tree National Park is just a couple miles away and the property features views of the mountains in the park. There are excellent running and hiking trails outside of the park just a short walk from the property.
