Overview

About the property

Designer home with thatched outdoor kitchen and amazing views to enjoy!

Executive 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom, home with an exceptionally well-appointed kitchen featuring a French La Canche Range, Le Creuset pots and pans, chefs knives and plenty of glassware and crockery. The open plan with a hand-crafted monkey-pod bar is ideal for entertaining family and friends while cooking a gourmet meal.

Alternatively, simply enjoy the beautiful views of Mauna Kea and the world-renowned telescopes from the lanai or the Jacuzzi and then take advantage of a range of dining options just five minutes away in the town of Waimea. Very quiet and romantic and centrally located not only for the beautiful country town of Waimea, but also the Hamakua coast with charming Honokaa leading to spectacular Waipio Valley. Also, the home has easy access to beautiful white-sand beaches, including Hapuna, Mauna Kea, Spencer Beach Park to name just a few. Maps and guidebooks are provided.

The home has a wonderful master bedroom with stunning views and a well-appointed en-suite bathroom.

The second bedroom also has the view over the lanai towards Mauna Kea and a bathroom just steps away across the hall.

The third bedroom and bathroom are at the other end of the house and features a small TV room and privacy from the other bedrooms. Ideal for another couple or for teenagers. This third bathroom is also the laundry room with large, efficient, front-loading LG washer and dryer.

For the teenagers or the whole family, the movie room is a great spot for an evening of entertainment, and the projector and sound-system offer a great alternative to a drive to the movie-theater!

The home features two televisions (a small one at the bar and a larger flat-screen in the TV room) and DirecTV cable. Unlocked wifi is also accessible throughout the home.

Everyone loves the thatched African hut for outdoor cooking and entertaining. The hut has a table that seats 6 and a gas BBQ, sink and fridge, sound system and lighting. It is really a fun spot and perfect for the fresh fish you picked up at Lau's Fish Market in Kawaihae, of some local range-fed beef.

All-in-all, this is a great house for a couple's romantic getaway, a family's base to explore the Big Island, or even a comfortable alternative for two or three couples to be out of the coastal heat, but close enough to world-class beaches, golf courses, and restaurants!

About Guy Cellier

As a professional forester and nurseryman with a doctorate in Geography, I love the Big Island for it's amazing diversity. Originally from South Africa, I came to Hawaii in 1996 from Alaska (where I worked for the Forest Service) and never left. I have been responsible for planting over 10 million trees on the island!

Guy Cellier purchased this house in 1996

Why Guy Cellier chose Kamuela

The home offers quiet luxury and seclusion with very easy access to restaurants, beaches, golf and outdoor activities. A gourmet kitchen as well as an outdoor entertainment area in a unique 'African Hut' make it an ideal family vacation home.

What makes this house unique

The home is styled after an African lodge, with custom hand-made furniture from locally sourced woods with amazing attention to detail throughout. Sunsets will provide a great jacuzzi experience! The home is ideal for a 'foodie' with a fabulous kitchen on an open-plan bar and living room for entertaining. A fun movie room is ideal for teenagers!

We are located only 15 minutes from some of the most pristine beaches on the island, Hapuna Beach and Wailea Bay, near Puako. Waimea is known for it's fabulous farmer’s markets where the freshest vegetables can be found on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

In addition, hikes, and fabulous beaches are within easy driving distance. Kona and Hilo are both an hour’s drive away and the entrance on Saddle Road for the 'Mauna Kea Summit' is 30 minutes away. A 20 minute drive brings you to Honokaa Town leading you to Waipio Valley, and 45 minutes away is Pololu Valley in Hawi. From Hilo it's only 26 more miles to Volcano National Park with the active volcano.

The town of Waimea has plenty to offer with its art galleries, boutiques, Parker Ranch, spas, golf on the coast, playgrounds, astronomy at the KECK observatory, the Anna Ranch Museum, and a great selection of local restaurants. As stated by one restaurant critic '

This is also a perfect location for mountain bikers, triathlon trainers, and any type of sports or science enthusiast.

Beautiful and luxurious

  • 5 of 5

Overall the best vacation rental I've ever stayed in. The house is gorgeous with spectacular views and exceptional comfort. Every detail is well thought out from the functional kitchen to the sleeping arrangements. windows and ceiling fans works great when it got warm and fire place and heater worked well enough when it got cold. The lanai and hot tub were perfect for adding that extra level of relaxation. We enjoyed our time immensely and will definitely stay again. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a perfect vacation rental.

Outstanding

  • 5 of 5

February 2017: Had an outstanding stay at this beautiful home. There were 3 couples and we stayed 10 nights. This was a perfect spot for us to hang out and relax after busy days with sight seeing and activities on the island. The view of Mauna Kea early in the morning was just breathtaking with the sunrise. Loved the hot tub and African Hut where the guys grilled several times. The sound system was wonderful and we thoroughly enjoyed listening to music from a fantastic station on the island. The home is quite lovely with unique furniture and decor. We had such fun discovering all of the appointments that were included in the theme of the home. The kitchen was was over the top! You will not be disappointed! We had turkey visitors outside most mornings that were so enjoyable to watch. Guy met us at the door and welcomed us and answered our questions. Could not have been happier with our stay.

Beautiful Home/Beautiful Views

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a little diversity in our Big Island vacation, and this beautiful vacation home gave it to us. Perched a mile or so beyond the town of Waimea, we were at 3200 feet, with cool and misty night temperatures and sweeping views of the Maunakea volcano. Guy's home was very tastefully furnished with African pieces, and it was an open and relaxing environment and a great place to relax. It's full of interesting books, has robust wifi and good TV internet options, plus a gas fireplace for the cool evenings. We all liked to cook, and the home has an amazing kitchen with high quality appliances, beautiful cookware and everything you could need. Waimea has a couple of good markets, plus an organic market (be prepared for high food prices). We visited the Saturday market in town, as well. A 20-minute drive took us to the beaches down the highway from Waimea. There the weather is warm and tropical. Guy has boogie boards, umbrellas, snorkels, beach towels and flippers, so that was handy. It's easy to get to the little town of Hawi via a beautiful drive, and it's an easy drive to Hilo. We thought the house was perfectly situated to see a lot of interesting, diverse parts of the island. (Our son accomplished his goal of running to the top of Maunakea at 13,803 feet, where he had to cross a couple of snowfields to reach the summit!) We would highly recommend this VRBO to friends and family. (I forgot to mention the wild turkeys that roam around the neighborhood; we liked them!)

Such a beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week in late June. It's such a beautiful home up in a quiet and nice neighborhood. Guy is such a wonderful host and person. He met us and did a quick walk through and was super informative about the home and things to do. The house is even more exquisite in person. It's just stunning. It's at the edge of a cul de sac over looking the mountains. It was still warm, so the cooler nights were refreshing. I brought a light jacket, but never needed more than a light long sleeve shirt. The house is very clean, comfy beds and has everything you need. We spent a lot of time in the tv room off the 3rd bedroom. We loved the hot tub and enjoyed a movie on the wall in the movie room. We stayed on the coast a few days before and were a little worried about driving into the mountains while staying in Hawaii, but it was so wonderful!

We drove around almost everyday. We went over to the Waipio Valley, up to Hawi (beautiful ranches along mountain drive), all the way down to the south point and green beach (amazing day trip we'll never forget. Must have a 4 wheel drive to make it worth it), over near Kona to the gorgeous beaches at A Bay and Hapuna State Park. The only thing we didn't get to do was go to the summit of Mauna Kea. It's actually an hour and half drive, since you have to drive around the backside of the mountain.

There's great food spots nearby. Yong's Kalbi has amazing plate lunches. Highly recommend the Meat Jun with Korean chicken and fried mandoo. Village Burger and Hawaiian Style Cafe were great. Los Tres Mex has wonderful Mexican food. Plenty of Grocery stores, Waimea coffee shop was wonderful, a nearby park for our daughter, farmers market, etc. Everything was just a quick drive and we got to experience so much staying on this side of the island. Don't even hesitate. This is an insanely beautiful home and so quiet and relaxing. Oh yeah, don't forget to feed the turkeys everyday in the front yard. What a treat. :)

An Awesome Location - And an Awesome Home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six had a wonderful stay at Guy's home - it was the perfect fit for our immediate family of four and two grandparents (ages 70 and 79). For four nights we thoroughly enjoyed the accommodations utilizing the incredible kitchen to create special meals and relax in a truly beautiful home. Everyone slept restfully with the cool evenings and quiet location. Our two boys (ages 9 and 12) loved feeding the wild turkeys that would come around the property and everyone enjoyed the hot tub and the spectacular view of Mauna Kea - breathtaking! From this perfect location we were only 15 minutes from our favorite beach and enjoyed the local farmer's market as well as a guided tour into Waipio Valley and a Luau at the beautiful Mauna Kea Resort. Guy had everything we needed for the beach - and even bought boogie boards so the boys would have them while we were staying at his home. Don't hesitate if you are looking at renting Guy's house - it is everything it promises to be and more!!!

Heavenly Hospitality under a Reddish-Orange Umbrella

  • 5 of 5

3 graduates of Hawaii Preparatory Academy Class of 1965 & our wives rented Guy's home for our 50th class reunion 3 day weekend celebration - no dorms for this group!

As a personal friend & colleague of Guy's for nearly 2 decades, I & my wife were not worried about much related to our stay at the house, but the Seattle, WA & Pomona Park, FL couples had not been to Waimea/Kamuela in at least 5 years. Needless to say all were enthusiastically exuberant about the facilities, location, views, well equipped kitchen, braai (bbq) hut, hot tub on large porch, multi-media projection & TV rooms, comfortable, large bed & bath areas, etc.

I guess I can describe our stay best by noting that one of the continental USA wahines (she left Hawaii after college with her husband - my HPA classmate & worked as a very high level Financial Exec in one of Sam Zell's large REITS) spent a bit of time during our stay trying to figure out what would need to transpire for her & her husband to retire at the house. Suffice it to say the house is a property professional's dream & the rest of us agree!

Mahalo Plenty Guy!
