Wayne is from the Proctor area which is just outside of Duluth. We Mountain bike, road bike, paddle, run, row, Nordic ski and do anything else that is silently powered by us in the outdoors on a daily basis. Eve has written articles for Silent Sports Magazine for the past twelve years along with blogging on Northlandrunner. In addition, she has been the top ski trail reporter for Skinnyski for the past few years! Wayne has been working for Super One stores for thirty years and enjoys his job! Eve who was formerly a teacher and accountant, now coaches adults who are beginners and those who like to go slowly in running roads, trails, and Nordic skiing. Both Eve and Wayne officiate at the state Nordic and Cross Country meets along with volunteering for all of Grandma's events. Eve also times a lot of silent sports events, takes photos at many of them, and puts a few on.

Eve Graves purchased this house in 2004

Why Eve Graves chose Duluth

We lived here until recently when we moved ten miles away to be able to walk out the front door and into several parks, the Superior Hiking Trail, and have some land.

What makes this house unique

UMD, St. Scholastica, Chester Bowl, Bagley and Lake Superior are all within a mile of this house! Our website details how close we are to so many other outdoor playgrounds!

Excellent location for outdoor activities

  • 4 of 5

House was adequate for our needs. It is an older home but location was great for the outdoor activities we wanted to participate in during our stay. We did not want fancy or pricey so it was fine. Owner was extremely accommodating in providing information on outdoor activities and locations to see. Providing GPS coordinates or addresses in her book filled with information on trails, restaurants etc. would help us not have to rely on her so much for directions Place is good for the price as you have a kitchen to use and enough beds for a family of 5. Basic supplies and cooking equipment is in the home but you may need to buy some things not provided like foil. There were linens, trash bags, sandwich bags, laundry and dish soap etc. Linens were on beds but extra linens were balled up in cabinet. Floors upstairs are very creaky but not a problem if all sleeping at the same time. Our cell phones worked so we could stream WI Fi to other devices from our cell phones. Older movies and games are available some on VHS for viewing which was nice to have available. A dishwasher would be an added plus as it is not provided currently. We enjoyed our stay. We only wish weather would have been better, as we had a lot of rain the week we stayed. Enjoyed our hikes anyway as owner was able to suggest which places were better for the weather on that day. She was very accommodating and quick to answer questions by text.

Owner's Response: We spent quite a bit of time helping these guests with their vacation, at least 2 calls per day. They had an additional 10% discount on top of our already lower than most licensed rentals prices too. Information was provided to the guests several times via email prior to the trip so that websites and addresses that were not in the book could be looked up and located. Many of the trails do not have an address, we just know how to give directions to them. As stated in our description, we only provide laundry soap and trash bags, no paper towels, tin foil, etc as we try to be nice to the earth. Linens and blankets are stored all over and often guests move them around, it is tough to make sure it is folded neatly each time a guest checks in as there are so many extras. In order to save guests an expensive cleaning fee as many others charge, my husband cleans and he sometimes forgets to check on the neatness of the sheets that are in storage. We have quite a selection of VHS and DVD's along with two of each player, many are new movies some are older too and we find many enjoy the oldies! We are a low tech home, no Wifi or cable, just loads of games, books, magazines, and movies. The dishwasher is always you...those can probably be found in the fancy homes that charge quite a bit more. We lived there for ten years without one! Floors do creak in a home that is almost 110 years old!

clean, friendly, and exactly what we needed!

  • 5 of 5

If you need a comfy place to stay, and want to feel more like you are crashing with friends - this is a great option. We were able to celebrate a special weekend in Duluth with our family (ages ranging from 6 to 70), and were glad to find a place we could all be together. Eve was friendly and welcoming, and we enjoyed our (too brief) stay!

Great location, great for families with pups!

  • 4 of 5

The location was great with very easy access to downtown, the University, and restaurants. The house had everything we needed. Across the street is a mostly-fenced park that we could run the dogs (though you're not supposed to let them off leash). We made the one main real bathroom work for the 7 of us. There are tons of extra blankets, and the beds are very comfortable. It was fun staying in an old 1907? house. Eve was amazing at communicating and offered many suggestions on things to do that we normally don't. We would stay there again.

Good location.

  • 4 of 5

This is an older well maintained rental home in an established area. It has a basement, one mini van sized garage and two stories. The bathroom and the three bedrooms are upstairs. The kitchen is fully equipped if you want to cook. No internet at this time. The neighborhood is quiet.

We drove a long way primarily because I wanted to see the northern end of I-35. I also wanted to see a real winter. We are from a small town south of Dallas, Texas.

There were more expensive places to stay but I believe if we had gone there we would have missed out on the most important factor: The host and hostess are extremely helpful in guiding tourists to the many attractions in the area. We were amazed by their sincerity in wanting us to have a memorable vacation. We didn't know where to go or what exactly to do once we arrived in Duluth. They asked what are interests were and it went very well from there.

We saw things we had never seen before, did things we had never done before and at the end of the day after our adventures, we returned exhausted to a house which felt like home and rested peacefully in a quiet neighborhood away from the party scene.

We've stayed in rental houses/cabins in Florida, Arkansas, New Mexico, Colorado, Mexico and Canada (in the summer). We've had fun and adventures in each location but this one of the best times we've ever had. We'd go again in a minute up there and if we did we would stay at the same place.

For anyone reading this review who is a tourist coming from far away, remember the strong point is the sincere helpfulness of the host and hostess. They actively participate in outdoor activities, are quite knowledgeable and can direct you if you truly wish to enjoy all that Duluth has to offer. We recommend this place.

Lou, Val and Colman.

Perfect Place

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying here and the owner was even more hospitable than the first time. This is a great place with central access to all parts of Duluth in a quiet neighborhood. The garage stall is an added bonus. Plenty of room for our snow gear.

Great location to all touristy attractions.

  • 4 of 5

Our only real complaint was that sleeping was on futons and not actual beds. After long days of skiing beds would have been fabulous.

We were able to cook full meals in the kitchen. Plenty of pots and pans, dishes and glassware.

Owner's Response: We only have one futon in the bedrooms, the rest are regular beds, a queen bed, a bunk with a twin and a double. We have a limit of 7 people in our rental and they showed up with 9 from ND and we decided to be nice and not make them get a hotel for the extra people, so they were forced to sleep on the couches or futon downstairs. Had they adhered to the rules of the rental, they would have had one futon upstairs which is clearly listed in the description of the bedrooms. We are purchasing a second mattress so it will be a double futon in the upstairs bedroom.
