About the property

Quiet neighborhood with large house to use while you explore nature!

Urban Silent Sports Retreat is a house built in 1908 that is centrally located a mile up from beautiful Lake Superior. This spacious three bedroom, two bathroom house with full unfinished basement and attached garage has plenty of safe storage for your bicycles, Nordic skis, canoe's and kayaks! Basement is set up for waxing your Nordic skis and we have some bikes and Nordic skis available for renters.

If you are looking for posh, planning to party, smoke at all, do drugs or drink excessively, you'll have to find a different place to rent.

If you want a very quiet house in a nice established neighborhood to use as your home base while you paddle the rivers, bike, run, hike or ski the trails of Outdoor Magazine's top outside town, this is your place!

Home, with much of it's original woodwork, is located less than a mile from Chester Bowl and Bagley which have both running and Nordic ski trails. Piedmont, Lester, and Hartley are within a few miles of the home and have Mountain bike trails, running, and Nordic skiing. Spirit Mountain, Jay Cooke State Park, and more are within 30 minutes of the retreat!

Your hosts spend most of their free time on the numerous trails and bodies of water in the area and would love to share their knowledge with you to help you plan your excursions!

Limit of 7 people, pets only upon approval in special cases with additional deposit.

Rates vary depending upon time of year, call for details.

Discounts given to certain Silent Sports groups and retired folks who want to play in this ginormous playground of Duluth.

Because this is located in a well established residential area, quiet renters are required and this will be enforced by immediate removal if violated.

Our home is a safe, secure, licensed rental PL-14-055

About Eve Graves

We are both avid Silent Sports Enthusiasts who enjoy this magnificent outdoor playground of Duluth on a daily basis. Eve is originally from Southern Wisconsin and a huge Badger and Packer fan. Wayne is from the Proctor area which is just outside of Duluth. We Mountain bike, road bike, paddle, run, Nordic ski and do anything else that is silently powered by us in the outdoors on a daily basis. Eve has written articles for Silent Sports Magazine for the past twelve years along with blogging on Northlandrunner. In addition, she has been the top ski trail reporter for Skinnyski for the past few years! Wayne has been working for Super One stores for thirty years and enjoys his job! Eve who was formerly a teacher and accountant, now coaches adults who are beginners and those who like to go slowly in running roads, trails, and Nordic skiing. Both Eve and Wayne officiate at the state Nordic and Cross Country meets along with volunteering for all of Grandma's events. Eve also times a lot of silent sports events, takes photos at many of them, and puts a few on.

Eve Graves purchased this house in 2004

Why Eve Graves chose Duluth

We lived here until recently when we moved ten miles away to be able to walk out the front door and into several parks, the Superior Hiking Trail, and have some land.

What makes this house unique

This property is centrally located and has safe indoor storage for all those Silent Sports toys along with a waxing area and bench for Nordic skis. UMD, St. Scholastica, Chester Bowl, Bagley and Lake Superior are all within a mile of this house! Our website details how close we are to so many other outdoor playgrounds!

We stayed at this rental house while we were visiting some Duluth area colleges. I'm sure we will stay again as my daughter is considering college in Duluth. The location is convenient for many things. We walked to a restaurant Eve suggested. There really is a lot of room and even a place to wax x country skis. Eve is amazingly helpful with area activities, and a wonderful host.

Great place to experience Duluth

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed at Eve's city house which is full of character and soul. We're on a cycle trip across the US and we stayed here for an extra long weekend. The house is comfortably furnished and each bedroom has a theme. We particularly enjoyed the well-equipped kitchen. There is a large selection of videos, books, and games. The neighborhood is nice with restaurants and an excellent grocery store nearby. Eve is a wonderful host and we'd gladly stay here again.

Renters Deserve More

  • 2 of 5

Having rented a dozen comparably priced homes in tourist locations throughout the US and Europe which rated 4+ out of 5, this rental falls terribly short of the mark due its poor condition and lack of thoughtful touches that most other rentals provide. The home is run down, threadbare, funky, and lacks quaintness. Note that the photos portray the rental in a much kinder light than is evident in person.

On the positive side, the location to the lake is good and the neighborhood is relatively quiet except for crows and excitable small dogs nearby. The queen bed is comfortable, the bathroom good sized, and the garage, washer/dryer and window AC are nice touches. The owner is very responsive and readily available to assist with activity ideas.

This home may have a lot of potential, but in its current condition and for the price charged, we would not recommend renting it.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately this review is from someone who was able to travel the world, lives in CA, yet we were told unable to afford anything more expensive than our property which is the lowest priced legal rental in the area for it's large size. This property is designed for those who enjoy hiking, trail running, Mt biking, paddling, and more. It says right in the description that it is not "posh" and based on comments and pictures sent directly to me about paint drips on a wall here and there, this renter was looking for something fancy, not a house designed for those who like to get outside into the depths of nature and come back in with a dog. We have been full for the past few months with either renters or those from Warmshowers, who are people biking across the country and we let them stay for free, so getting in to do things is tough. We were able to do two deep cleans since she rented, we primed the ceiling but were not able to get in to paint it before she was there, she didn't like that either. Most renters enjoy our "pink throne"...all she saw was pink paint that was missing from the base of it, from so much use. She was not there when I did the check in even though we require that, and complained about other things such as a lack of pillows, I told her companions where the dozen or so extra pillows were. We have up north themed decor and she wanted us to get rid of those items we had on shelves such as bears, canoes, etc. We have one of the very few rentals with an oversized one car attached garage, she felt was too small. We redid our floors two years ago and she did not like the way they looked or the fact that they creaked upstairs. Other suggestions given were to have a mirror in each bedroom, an extra one in the bathroom by the table, and a lined dresser in each room. We do have a mirror in one bedroom, a dresser and walk in closet in the same room. We have a built in dresser in the walk in closet in the other room, and the small room has hooks and a chair because it is too small to be comfortable with a dresser in it. Our kitchen is not updated, but it is functional and loaded with everything you'd ever need! We have a nice lazy boy sectional, she found to be uncomfortable and inappropriate. If you want perfection, yes please stay at a hotel or elsewhere, this isn't for you as it was not for her. If you want a nice up north home to use as your base...then yes, this is for you!

great weekend

  • 5 of 5

The house was centrally located to every place we wanted to go to. The house was very comfortable. Everything we needed was there. Eve was very accommodating with our change in schedule. The book that she put together about different places to see or places to eat was very helpful.
