the house actually looks even better in real life
The house and the pool are very beautiful, and every thing is well thought of (you can literally find everything you need in it). Maria is very helpful and easy to reach and we were even happily surprised with a mid-vacation cleaning (9 nights). The island itself is not for everyone. It is not a very touristic island which is great in some ways and not so great in others (a nice beach with some water sport is about 50 min drive for example). great from a relaxing stay.
Amazing family time - wonderful memories were made here
Maria Lemos - very competent and no-nonsense quarterback for the trip - handled all aspects of our stay from arranging a private boat transfer from Lavrios, to showing us the island, to arranging the hire car, to troubleshooting questions and issues during our stay. Top notch service - best we have had.
House has gorgeous views of the sea and nearby islands - seen from several outdoor vantage points - you are on the cliff edge. There are at least three terrace spaces to eat and drink comfortably. Many of the places we have stayed in the past shortchanged on outdoor seating - not here. There was plenty of choice of comfy options - from sunbeds to directors chairs to wicker. We cooked fish and meat on the BBQ - and enjoyed morning coffee in the glorious sunshine. Great memories. Reality is better than the pictures! The interior public spaces are cozy - which did not matter as we spent our time outside.
Our party of six occupied three of the four bedrooms - ensuring privacy. Bedrooms are simple and comfortable - the one upstairs has a view of the sea. The (sometimes strong) breezes kept us cool in the evening - we did not use the AC.
It took us a little while to get used to the "no paper in the toilet" rule - one which applies across Kea. We drank only bottled water - including for brushing teeth.
Be sure to rent a 4x4 (we had a little Fiat Panda which did the job) to negotiate the dirt roads - the house is well placed for trips to the gorgeous beaches on the island. We were 15 minutes to the port and shopping. We had fabulous family time.
Thank you for your kind words,
we are happy you had a good vacation. Hope to see you again.
We had a great time at the villa. We could enjoy of breathtaking views from many rooms of the villa and of course from the large terraces. The access to the sea was unfortunately unavailable as the stone stairs were broken. Water of the swimming pool very very cold, probably because we were there in May.
I would like to thank Maria for the support provided, always perfect!
I hope to come back to the villa one day.
Thank you for your kind words, it was a pleasure having you. The pool water was I am sure cold as you stayed in May and the weather was not good. Next time you come, we will have the steps in front fixed so you can go down to the sea. Hope to see you soon.
Kea was once called the Water Island, Ydroussa, and it is believed that the name is connected to the water nymphs, that lived here
according to mythology. Because it was such a pretty island, gods got jealous, and sent a lion to ravage the land. The nymphs fled, and as a subsequence, the island dried out. The Keans then asked Apollo's son Aristaeus for help, and he built a temple to Zeus, who apart from being the highest god, also was the one who sent rain. This pleased him, and the nymphs and waters returned, giving Kea a fertile soil with good crops.
The island has been inhabited since Neolithic times. In the 13th century, the island was ruled by the Venetians, and 300 years later by the Turks. Meanwhile, Kea was often raided by pirates, and the locals suffered greatly. It is therefore not surprising that Kea was one of the first Greek islands to enroll in the War of Independence in 1821.
Vourkari, Kea: The little harbor of Vourkari is a 10 minute drive from the house and a delightful place popular with the yachting crowd. Although there is no beach in Vourkari itself, the lovely sandy beach at Gialiskari is just round the corner. Vourkari has quite a busy nightlife and there are several good fish restaurants and a couple of trendy bars. There is also a mini-market and a couple of arts and crafts shops as well as boutiques.
Otzias Bay, Korissia,: Otzias Bay and Korissia are only 12 minute drive from the house and the pretty island
capital Ioullis is a 15 minutes drive up the mountain (there is a local bus service). The Otzias Bay has a long stretched sandy beach with a lagoon section that makes it ideal for swimming for families with small children. The organized beaches of Spathi and Koundouraki, are ideal
for those that like water sports. There is also an organized office in Vouraki for those that want to go scuba diving.
Unlike others, Kea remains a quaint, low profile, rugged island, with few tourists, and an abundance of pristine beaches, beautiful blue-green
waters, and ancient cobblestone marked foot-paths, bird-watching nature reserves, few hotels and mostly, privately owned houses.
Seasonally or permanently, to relax and enjoy, Kea boasts known names of the Greek and international jet-set in business, law, science, and art,
as it appeals to the discerning visitor who seeks tranquillity, authenticity and a genuinely Aegean environment.
