A climb to remember
Spent the weekend at this cabin with friends and my fiancé to celebrate her birthday. The drive up the mountain was the most exhilarating experience I’ve encountered in life... next to skydiving. You definitely want someone confident and composed to drive!
2- Get enough groceries for the length of your stay because you will not want to travel up and down the mountain if you can avoid it.
3- This House had everything we wanted and needed.. plenty of space .. plenty of fire wood and an incredible view! We want to come back!
The road up to the cabin was a little scary but so worth it to wake up to those views!!
Wonderfully appointed home!
This is an amazing house. The owners made sure that everything needed was provided at the home on arrival.
A great place for a getaway
We stayed at Old Sarum this Oct 2017. It was about an hours drive from Asheville. My GPS gave clear directions to the place, but a friend's GPS did not. Google Maps gives correct directions, but it does not work once you lose the signal (you lose mobile network as soon as you start the uphill drive on the dirt road, verizon, at&t... all).
We reached there after sunset and it had already become dark. The final stretch of dirt road that leads to the house is narrow, steep and with sharp turns at some places. My two wheel drive sedan could easily climb with full capacity + luggage, but my friend's wagon did not. He had to stop, backup a couple of times. It can be scary at night to stop and backup on such a steep road. Can't imagine going there during snow with 2 wheel drive.
The place itself was good. Very clean, cozy and good for a getaway. It had enough linen, toiletries, and kitchen was well equipped. The only reason for 4 stars is the stench coming from all toilets that persisted through our stay that probably came from the septic tank. Nothing helped remove the stench. We told the owner about it and he responded with a few tips. I am sure he must have taken care of it now.
It shouldn't hold you back from staying here. If you are looking for a quiet place away from city life, this is a good place.
Great way to escape a Hurricane! Although drive up was SCARY!
So I picked this house while trying to escape from Hurricane Irma with 6 other people, and it was one of the only things left in the Asheville area that could accommodate us. Turned out to be an amazing find! The owner was great, especially considering he was dealing with the hurricane himself (in FL!!) and still found the time to answer all of my questions and he even called to check on us after we lost power. The house was beautiful, had absolutely everything you could want or need and plenty of space for everyone.
I am giving this review 5 stars even though I have a complaint because overall, it did not detract from my experience. The drive up the mountain. Holy cow - I live in a very flat area and that was terrifying. Gravel road, super steep and several switchbacks so sharp you couldn't make them without backing up halfway through and trying again. I just think this should be disclosed in the description of the house so people can be prepared. It was mentioned in the info sent, AFTER I rented the house. But it still does not prepare you for the reality.
Overall, this is definitely an amazing house, great views, well stocked and thoughtful owners.
Almost heaven...Don't have to be in West Virginia to have a heavenly mountaintop experience! What a fabulous experience at "Old Sarum"! The only downside was we couldn't stay longer. Our family loved this home and getting there is half the fun:).
Quiet and secluded with beautiful views on mountain ridge yet close to many cities and attractions. 45 minutes to Asheville and Biltmore. 1 hour drives to skiing, whitewater rafting, cherokee gambling. Closest to great shopping and dining in Waynesville. Great hiking nearby. Waterfalls and scenery nearby on the Blue Ridge Parkway. 10 minutes to Lake Logan and Daniel Boone Boy Scout Camp.
