Exceeded our expectations on many levels!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Carmen & Scott's "Cozy Cabin" from Sept. 2-9. 2017. The cabin was everything it was supposed to be, but also so much more. It would be difficult to put into a VRBO description all of the things that came with our stay: Solitude and silence except for the sounds of farm animals, total privacy except for discovering that the cows and the horses in the pasture have chosen to spend a few minutes near the fence below our deck, and charming hosts who invited us into their life to share an evening campfire with them the night before we left. We even found ourselves friends with their dog, "Lulu!" If you are worried about isolation, the high speed wi-fi internet and Dish Network TV kept us connected to the rest of the world as much as we liked. Weekend breakfasts prepared by Carmen and delivered to our cabin by their son was a perk that will likely be unparalleled by any other VRBO vacation anywhere else. It was gourmet!

Nearby Kalona is influenced by the Amish community who are somewhat prevalent in this area. Downtown seemingly is thriving. Every business is occupied, and storefronts are so well kept that it looks like it could be from a movie set. If you enjoy antiques & craft stores, an Amish General Store, but also great restaurants that run the gamut from Mexican to Italian to family dining to a micro-brewery with a fine menu, you can easily spend a couple of days just exploring what Kalona, population 2500, has to offer. Be sure to take advantage of an available bus tour of the Amish countryside that includes information about Amish culture as well as stops as three rural businesses that one would probably never learn about without this activity. If you want the attractions of a bigger city, nearby Iowa City (75,000) is nice college city just a short drive away, and the trip there offers some additional attractions along the way.

Finally, the part of this stay that will vary a little for everyone are the potential exchanges with your hosts, Scott & Karmen. You could stay on their property and farm yard and opt for distance and privacy, or, you can ask a few questions and learn about why they live here, how their hobby farm has expanded, their dreams for the future, how they have helped those around them, and leave - as we did - with an unanticipated friendship. A week in the country at "Cozy Cabin" rejuvenated our spirits.

They Make You Feel Like Family

  • 5 of 5

Carmen, Scott, and family were unbelievable hosts! Our family came together from across the country for a long weekend to attend our nephew's graduation. The cottage was cozy and served as a perfect gathering place for breakfast each morning and to relax at the end of each day. And speaking of breakfast, WOW! A farm fresh breakfast was delivered in picnic baskets to our cottage and it was a spread to remember! Eggs, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, homemade pastries, pancakes... truly a 5-star meal and worth the price of admission in and of itself. Carmen made cinnamon rolls the 2nd morning that we are still talking about!

Thank you, Carmen and Scott, for making our stay so comfortable. We can't wait to return next year for the next nephew's graduation!

A beautiful cottage, wonderful owners on a blissfully peaceful farm.

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay here for 10 days over Christmas. Carmen, the owner, was wonderful- on arrival the cottage was warm and cozy, with fresh bread left out for us and a note wishing us a restful night after our long flight. She then delivered an absolutely delicious breakfast basket and was on hand with any queries that we had.

The cottage was perfect for visiting our family in nearby Kalona, but also handy for getting to Iowa City and was fully equipped with everything you might need in the kitchen, a washer and dryer and lovely clean bedrooms and bathrooms. We look forward to staying again in the future.

Fun location off the beaten patj

  • 5 of 5

The listing is very accurate, but fails to account for the hidden benefit of renting from the Kiefers. You will not find a nicer couple to rent from. Down home hard working Iowa people who care about your stay. Property was clean and they live 300 feet from the cabin, so if you need anything, it will be handled. I would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a rural type setting, close to big city amenities. Local Kalona restaurants are very good and reasonable. I have already booked two more months at this vrbo.

Great Weekend!

  • 5 of 5

We had a little communication problem leading up our stay, but once Carmen fixed that, everything was great.

We came for the Wisconsin vs Iowa game and this was the closest remaining property that would work for our group of 6. It definitely is off the beaten path a bit, but it worked for us. Friday night we were tired and did not want to cook so went to the brew pub a few miles down the road. We were more than pleasantly surprised with that place and the food, I would highly recommend it. We declined breakfast on Saturday because we were off early to tailgate, but enjoyed Sunday breakfast delivered hot! Carmen's grandson gave us a very informative tour of the farm. We also enjoyed a nice big fire on Saturday night, something you certainly cannot get at the Red Roof Inn. WiFi and Sattelite TV were a welcomed bonus. If there was one downside, I would say it was the roosters underneath the back porch which apparently do not wait for sunrise for their wake up call, but we all had a good laugh about it. We are from Wisconsin and no strangers to farms, but I have to say this was a unique experience, in a good way.
