This beautiful 3 bedroom Spanish style bungalow is nestled in a little subdivision that backs onto a small river. This air conditioned home features an open floor plan with the living room, dinette and kitchen all flowing together. In the front, a spacious veranda finished in ceramic tile is great for sitting and enjoying the scenery. Out the back door, stepping stones lead to a circular patio with firepit in the center, all shaded by a mango tree. Just 2 minutes outside the town of Paquera, this area is a haven for birds and wildlife. Howler monkeys and white faced monkeys frequent the property and over 150 species of birds, including parrots, hummingbirds and cuckoos visit regularly. Relatively untouched by development, this region is still quite typical of Costa Rican life prior to the tourist boom. Oxcarts are used to haul material and horses are not uncommon. Just two minutes up the road however the new medical center, banks, supermarkets, and restaurants are all easily accessible. Just ten minutes away is Playa Organos, a great beach where they have night kayak plankton bio luminescence kayak tours!

About Michael Phelan
I live in Edmonton, Alberta Canada but I love this wonderful part of Costa Rica. My daughter, son in law, and my grandson live in the capital San Jose, so Costa Rica is really my second home. Come down, enjoy the house, and this beautiful area and the great people of Costa Rica.
Michael Phelan purchased this House in 2012
Why Michael Phelan chose Paquera
We looked long and hard and finally settled here because of the great blend of nature and close proximity to all of the services in the town.
What makes this House unique
Whether you are walking to the convenience store 100 yards from the house, or driving the winding roads down to the beach, you know you are truly in a different country and not an all inclusive that is identical to every other all inclusive the world over. Its fun to 'explore' and bit. It is also very safe in this area. It is quite quiet and the local people are very friendly.

Paquera is a small town with lots of good qualities. The house was wonderful.
The house in Paquera was pretty, comfortable and clean. Any thing we needed was addressed quickly by the owner. There is a nice restaurant at the local hotel Gianna that has wonderful food. Curu Reserve is close and a great place to visit
Thanks Lisa for your stay and remember we look forward to seeing back again sometime!
Mike's Place is great
Paquera is not a tourist destination, but Mike and Manuel helped us plan out a wonderful vacation while seeing how the locals live. We had everything we needed , and cooked entire meals while there. If in Paquera, this is a great place to stay.
Quaint and Quiet
We stayed in Paquera at this wonderful quiet home for one week out of our three week trip to Costa Rica. We thoroughly enjoyed staying here! We used this as our home base as we explored the southern peninsula. There was a spectacular wildlife refuge close by called Curu National Wildlife Refuge that you shouldn't miss! It was nice to come back to this wonderful spacious home after a day of exploring. I would most definitely recommend a stay here if you are visiting the southern peninsula.
Comfort in the midst of the jungle
My husband and two sons really wanted to experience the less touristy parts of the country without sacrificing safety and basic comforts.
Thanks to Mike's bungalow, we felt right at home in Costa Rica!
To begin with, we were given very detailed information in advance about the property, the area and contact information. Then, when we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Nena (she does the housekeeping) and her husband (he built the place). What a sweet couple! They offered to help us any way we needed and showed us around the spotless home and showed us how to use the various amenities (including an air conditioning unit, which was quite an appreciated luxury in the hot, humid climate). The town was also easy to get around in, with supermarkets and an ATM close by. The highlight of our time there was a 10-15 min jaunt to the Curú Nature preserve. The quantity and variety of native wildlife to see there was breathtaking (although there was also quite a bit of wildlife right outside our window, too!).
I highly recommend making the visit to Paquera and staying at this property.
Thanks for the memorable experience!
Last winter Margaret and I were making plans to go on a vacation. By chance, I was working with Mike in Alberta and he suggested his cottage in Costa Rica. Margaret and I decided to try Costa Rica. What an experience. We enjoyed a beautiful Cottage, unbelievable weather, very friendly local people and an amazing vacation. We are very thankful to Mike for his help in guiding us to Costa Rica. This is one place we want to come back again
Great house in the perfect location. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation away from the hustle and bustle of city life, this it it. The people and all the neighbors were so friendly and welcoming. The house is new and very clean and fully equipped with everything you could need including strong WiFi. The beautiful beach and ocean were only a 10 minute car ride away and we were close to several other attractions. We will definately be back!!
Hi Shauna, Thanks for the wonderful review. I'm so glad that you had such a great time. I really look forward to seeing you and Rob again and spending some time with you on your next visit! Mike
This laid back area of Costa Rica is like life may have been almost a hundred years ago. Not many tourists and a very 'typical' Costa Rican feel to the pace of life. Oxcarts are still used regularly to haul goods and horses are not uncommon. Not much English spoken in the area, which adds to the cultural experience. Paquera and the lower Nicoya Peninsula have not yet been overly developed, even though two of the best beaches in the country, Santa Teresa and Montezuma are here. Curu Biological Reserve is just 10 minutes from the house. From there, take the 10 minute boat ride over to Isla Tortuga for the best diving and snorkeling on the peninsula! The closest beach is Playa Organos. It is a beautiful 2 kilometer long stretch with a fair sized river on one end that flows into the pacific. An absolute must is the night kayak plankton bio luminescence tour! It is in the Playa Organos area and can be booked through Bahia Rica Tours. Isla Tortuga can be seen from Playa Organos with a sharp eye or binoculars. A little further down the coast, the busier tourist towns of Montezuma and Santa Teresa are always lively.
