Alice's Cottage provides peace and tranquility, a perfect holiday retreat at any time of the year. Just a few steps from the West Looe River with an abundance of wildlife life. There is a pretty 45 minute walk through Kilminorth Woods beside the estuary to the lively town of Looe. Looe has a good selection of small shops in particular an excellent fresh fish shop right by the market on the quay. It has many historic buildings including smugglers pubs and some of Cornwalls finest restaurants. There is a gently shelving child friendly beach and the coast is excellent for sport fishing. A short drive away is picturesque Polperro and excellent sheltered bays at Talland, Lantivert and Lantic. The cottage is beautifully equipped to a high standard. The cottage offers accommodation over two floors and has a mixture of carpeting, slate, tile floors and rugs throughout. The oak beamed lounge has an ancient fireplace with wood burning stove providing cosines on a winter's break. The modern tiled bathroom with electric power shower over bath and has a heated towel rail. The large airy kitchen/dinner has a range of wall and base units, electric cooker, microwave, fridge with ice compartment, washing machine and seating for four.

Why Keith and Dawn Brown chose Looe

We purchased this property in August 2016 after only viewing once. It had everything we were looking for in a holiday home. Perfect location in the heart of the woods but just a short distance from Looe and Polperro. The visitors book confirmed what we already guessed that people were choosing to return to Alice's Cottage several times a year. So we have decided to share this beautiful cottage and location with others.

What makes this cottage unique

Delightful old chocolate box cottage sheltered in the hamlet of Watergate, stands in a beautiful wooded valley. This idyllic spot is perfect for birdwatchers and walkers. The sound of the stream running nearby adds to the feeling of tranquility. But just minutes from beaches, shops and restaurants.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Spent a week at Alice Cottage, stayed for Christmas. Set in a beautiful valley, walks on the doorstep. A great walk into Looe, which has numerous shops and cafés. Location was perfect, cottage was chocolate box. Quality fixtures and fittings - including lovely bedding and even fine bone china crockery. Left a welcome pack of cheese, chocolates, biscuits and milk in the fridge, which was greatly appreciated. A little piece of heaven. Very dog friendly area, have never seen so many people walking their dogs. If you want a private, relaxing break this is the place to stay. Thank you to Keith & Dawn and Maureen for all their help and hospitality. We will definitely visit again.

Hidden gem!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a lovely 2 weeks at Alice's Cottage. The cottage was very comfortable and well equipped, set in a beautiful, peaceful part of Cornwall, near Looe. Enjoyed many an evening sat outside, appreciating the tranquil location, with a glass of bubbly!! Would definitely recommend the river walk from Alice's Cottage into Looe.

Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, so pleased you enjoyed your holiday and you were able to appreciate all that Alice's Cottage has to offer. We had the opportunity of staying this weekend, as you mentioned it was so tranquil sitting outside and for us looking up at the amazing array of stars but the Meteorite shower was not quite what we had hoped for. Look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

Beautiful, cosy and snug

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week, blessed with good weather. The cottage was delightful and set in a small clearing by the river, very peaceful and everything we had imagined. The building has tiny rooms and the lounge was always cold (not bad when coming in on a hot day) but it was full of charm and character. We loved it and felt very at home here.

Idyllic setting. Beautiful cottage with quality beds, bedding etc. Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

Set in a tiny hamlet of 4 cottages, Alices cottage is wonderful. The river Looe is approx 20 steps away with footpaths through the surrounding ancient woodland. 11 min drive from Looe, ideally situated for exploring beautiful Cornwall. Watched the squirrels, birds (including ? Buzzards) and sat in the garden every morning and evening listening to the stream and wonderful birds. Lovely wood burning stove and top quality beds, bedding and all kitchen ware, were the icing on the cake. Fresh scones, clotted cream and jam and provisions for making tea waiting on our arrival. Highly recommended, we will be returning.

Great Cottage & Outstanding Location

  • 5 of 5

Alice's Cottage was just perfect for our requirements. The setting is outstanding, especially if you are seeking peace and tranquillity in beautiful surroundings, with wildlife a few steps from the door. At dusk, watch the Daubenton's bats swooping low over the river to feed, sometimes chasing each other, and listen to the owl calls echoing around the woods. Look out for a Fox too, and if you're luck (we weren't), a Kingfisher. Little Egrets are a common sight along the river, along with their bigger cousin, the Heron.

Alice's cottage is clean and well equipped, and the beds are super-comfortable at the end of a hard day's exploring. Maureen, the cottage manager, called by on our first afternoon to give us a welcome introduction to the cottage and surrounding area. We immediately felt at home here and were very sorry to leave at the end of our week. We fully intend to return to Alice's Cottage, and next time we hope to make it two weeks.

Watergate offers a peaceful retreat for guests, but within easy access of beaches, harbours and sheltered coves. Picturesque walks right on the doorstep. Looe only half hour stroll through the woods, or canoe along the river at high tide. Talland Bay and Polperro are worthy of an amble along the coastal path with spectacular views. This area is rich in bird-life with kingfishers, herons, buzzards, egrets and many more. For those who enjoy star gazing this is a perfect location due to clear skies the Milky Way is visible from the garden with the naked eye.
