Why Marla or Jay chose Puako

Puako (Pu-ah-ko) is the only small, quaint oceanfront community on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island. It is located about 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 22 miles north of the Kona airport. The island's largest white sand beach, Hapuna, is right next door.

Puako is conveniently located for enjoying all the resort hotels and restaurants on the Kohala Coast. The Mauna Kea, the Fairmont Orchid, the Mauna Lani and Hilton Hotels are just minutes away with their beaches, fine dining, shopping and world class golf courses. Kohala Divers and Ocean Sports is nearby at Kawaihae Center, and offers various ocean activities including scuba diving and sunset/afternoon sails. Kawaihae Center and Harbor are just 10 minutes by car, with several great restaurants and shops. You are close to almost any activity you may desire, with the exception of viewing the volcano which is a 3 hour drive.

Several fabulous beaches are minutes away. Hapuna Beach (voted best beach in Hawaii by Conde Nast Magazine) and Waialea Bay (Beach 69) both are wonderful for swimming, snorkeling and boogie boarding.

The neighborhood is called Puako, and it is conveniently located for touring all parts of the island. All homes in this neighborhood are on small acreage, so it is a very low density area. Driving time to the Kona airport is approx. 30 minutes, Kailua Kona 45 minutes, Waimea 20 minutes, Hilo 1½ hours, Captain Cook, coffee country, 1¼ hours, Hawi and Polulu Valley 20-30 minutes.

The sun shines 355 days per year and the average temperature highs are in the 80's with low's in the 60's. The ocean's edge is about 60 feet from your doorstep with crystal blue water that is 72-76 degrees year round.

Puako offers ideal fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing and kayaking. Walking and biking is a favorite, too! Sea turtles, dolphins and whales are some of the sea life you may see. Puako offers beach style living and a real sense of getting away from it all.

What makes this house unique

Puako is rich in Hawaiian history. Walk south along the ocean trail to see the petroglyphs. There are approximately 3,000 petroglyphs scattered throughout the Puako Archaeological Fields. These pictures are etched into the lava rock that dominates the Kohala and Kona Coasts. Access to the Puako Petroglyph Park is through the adjacent Mauna Lani Resort.

The waters around Puako are extremely clear due to the fresh water run off and strong coastal currents. Divers and snorkelers can enjoy waters abundant in sea life along the shallow reef at Puako. The Puako Marine Preserve is a protected environment for endangered sea life. Green sea turtles are a protected species and should not be bothered, only enjoyed and admired. Watch the humpback whales play along the coast. Beyond Puako's reef shelf the whales play and breach during their migration to Hawaii from Alaska. It is quite a sight!

Guestbook comments from the manager

“A beautifully furnished 4 bedroom house in Puako, a small town about 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona. It was lovely to sit outside on the back patio and read in the early morning and you would hear all kinds of birds singing, geckos climbing and the occasional mongoose. We all enjoyed cooking breakfast and dinners in the spacious well equipped kitchen. The amazing master bedroom complete with large walk-in shower and separate bathtub, which of course, my wife and I took. All the beds were very comfortable. It's a good jumping off point for the drive up to Mauna Kea Visitor Center and over to Hilo. It's a bit of a drive to Volcano Nat'l Park but you can plan for that. We actually drove to all parts of the Big Island (including eerie South Point, don't miss that) and we didn't mind the remoteness of the location, in fact we loved the little town and how quiet it is. The house is next door to the Puako General Store (the only store in Puako) open 7 days 8 am-7 pm. There are regular supermarkets we shopped at that are 2.5 miles, 5 miles away and a Safeway in Kailua-Kona. The little Puako General Store has most of what you might need, including fishing gear if you are so inclined. I needed monofilament line to put up a ham radio antenna--they had it, though the electrical noise next to the store meant I didn't operate the radio much. My wife and 2 adult kids and their mates spent a wonderful week here. The house is located across the street from the beach and there are 5 or 6 blue-and-white beach access signs pointing you to the beach within walking distance from the house. Most mornings, we began our day walking to the beach. The beaches in Puako are quite rocky (bring your water shoes) BUT the first day the kids got in the water and swam with sea turtles! Sea turtles are protected in Hawaii and are totally unafraid of humans - my animal-loving kids loved swimming with the turtles. 1.2 miles driving distance from the house is the most beautiful sandy beach I've ever seen (I live in Santa Monica, CA) called Hapuna Beach, the reason I chose this house. It's north up the coast from the house and an easy drive, located next to the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. On the same road is a perfect little shaded beach with good rock formations that is wonderful for snorkeling - my wife's favorite. Because we (unknowingly) picked the week of the Ironman triathlon for our Big Island vacation, they closed the highway to Puako on the Saturday of the event--this was the day we went

Perfect accommodations in Puako!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a spacious, affordable house near the beach in Puako for the six of us, and this house delivered more than we hoped for!! It was modern, clean and had a great layout, with a wonderful kitchen, too. The bamboo shower was so handy...we were able to wash off the sand from the beach & keep it out of the house. We loved the lanai & gas bbq grill, as well as the beach chairs & umbrellas. The Puako General Store is next door & very convenient for necessities & takeout.Beach 69 & Hapuna are nearby & great for snorkeling as well. We did not use the available air conditioning, as the multiple ceiling fans kept us comfortable. Our hosts provided us with good info & were responsive to our needs. We highly recommend this house for your vacation.

Delighted with the house

Great snorkeling across the street with access 100 yards either way. Quiet, dark neighborhood, the stars were great. Tough to visit Volcanoes NP from here though, it may be 67 miles but it's 2+ hours.

Thanksgiving Holiday on hte Big Island

The home we rented in Puako was perfect for our family of 7 (4 adults and 3 children). The living room and large kitchen was great for accomodating the eating and playing needs of everyone. The large back deck and yard was great for the kids too.

Lovely well-apportioned house in a great location.

  • 5 of 5

Kitchen had everything we needed (knives need sharpening but that was only thing I could suggest). The little store next door was so handy! Someone from our party was over there 2 or 3 times a day. Everything was spotlessly clean and the decor was pleasantly Hawaiian. Outside shower was so nice for a rinse after being at the beach.

We walked the two minutes to the ocean regularly and not only saw sea turtles but had them swimming beside us as we snorkeled. We loved exploring the reefs surrounding the area. Our favorite spot was a ten minute drive from here and we snorkeled there almost every day.
