About Cheryl McCoy

Our family moved to Guntersville in 2000. We fell in love with the people who were warm and welcoming.

Our children loved having the lake available for so many fun activities. Many days after school we would jump on our old pontoon boat and cook dinner on board. The favorite menu included chili dogs, chips and chocolate chip cookies.

Saturday or Sunday after church we may stop at the Piggly Wiggly and load up on fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans. Then we were off for a day of fishing, site seeing or skiing.

We have been blessed to be able to call Guntersville home.

Cheryl McCoy purchased this chateau / country house in 2014

Happy with experience.

Fantastic location! You do need to keep in mind this is a fishing cabin. A little rough around the edges but very comfortable, bed in the back bedroom is outstanding!

One tip, be sure to warn everyone staying not to use water if there is anyone in the shower, there is plenty of hot water but running water elsewhere can result in a surprise for anyone taking a shower.

Communication with the owner was excellent, will book the property again.

The outside is much nicer than the inside, but a bad area. This was a huge disappointment.

My whole family gathered at this house, from Birmingham, Columbus, Ga, Vonore, TN and Rainsville. It was surrounded by railroad tracks and two big plants that were pouring smoke out of their smokestacks. Before we got the cars unpacked we were all coughing. It was very cold and we could not ever get the house warm enough with the little plug-in heaters. The house is old and not well insulated. It is a maze that seems to have been added onto a lot and all the rooms, except a couple, are tiny. The upstairs half bath is a joke. You can see through the door which is also bent backwards at the top. Downstairs you have to walk through the bathroom or the other bedroom to get to the back bedroom, which was a back porch that has been enclosed, we almost froze to death back there. My mom and dad weren't even able to stay. After breathing the smoke that was overwhelming, they didn't last 2 hours and had to drive back home to Birmingham. This place is not for asthmatics! The first night, I finally fell asleep around 1:30am and was jolted out of bed by a train horn in the backyard about 3am! Since we weren't there to boat and fish, I didn't care it wasn't right on the water. It was more important it was dog friendly and the back yard fenced in. The first morning, I let our 15 year old dachshund out to potty. I got my boots and coat on and went to get him back in, as he is basically deaf and blind. When I got out there he was gone! There was a weird, random side gate that was open and he found it. We went all over that area looking for him and finally found him, scared us so bad. Our dogs enjoyed the back yard once we made sure it was secure. The dining room is pretty big, but the galley style kitchen is tiny. I guess if you just need some beds and basic needs so you can go fishing, or something, it would serve those needs. I felt like the level of "creative marketing" was so high it was basically deception. What made it worse was my husband and I paid for it as a gift to our parents and our grown kids, so we could all be together and my parents couldn't even stay. When I talked to the owner and told her all of this, she said she would give me a refund for my trouble. Turns out, she meant $150, about 1/3. I was so excited about our Christmas together and I ended up being very upset and feeling like I let everyone down instead. I do not recommend this place.

Owner's Response: It was unfortunate that LaVonda and her guests visited during some of the coldest temperatures in the cities recent recorded history. Many residents had frozen pipes, but Fish Camp's water remained working. Since opening Fish Camp to guests 4 years ago, our family has enjoyed hundreds of guests who have expressed how nice it is to be able to stay in a home with 5 bedrooms and 2 and 1/2 bathrooms for the cost of 1 hotel room. They have also remarked on how close the property is to many of the reasons they come to the city (fishing, boating, the state park, shopping and restaurants) We are truly sorry that her parents suffer from asthma and we tried to compensate them for their inconvenience. However, the rest of her guests did in fact stay and it is only fair that the expense of their stay be handled. Best of luck to LaVonda and her family in the future. Blessings, Cheryl

We are family of 9 adults and 6 children ranging in age from 8 months to 85 years old. We had a BLAST!!!! Cold weather and all. The whole setup was ideal for us, everything clean and accessible. We all loved being there and are looking at our calendars to work out for us to be able to stay for an entire week this summer.

Not satisfied

The best part of our stay was that we had sufficient bedrooms to accommodate our family size. We intended to have 10 people but ended up with 8 instead so we weren't cramped up or bumping into each other. On the other hand, it appears that no effort was made at all to ensure the house had been thoroughly cleaned before we arrived or within the recent two month. It smelled stale, stuffy, and as if fish had been inside and there was no hint that any cleaning products were used. The linen on the beds weren't clean, hairs were found within the sheets therefore we pulled them off and washed them before we got settled on the first day and didn't put them back on the beds until the morning of our departure (Dec 27th). We brought our own sheets and pillowcases just as of habit of being prepared and used them during our stay. The space heaters in each room wasn't sufficient to adequately heat that house especially in the winter months as this house never got to a warm temperature. They did assist in taking the cold edge off so that we could function. The garbage cans were already full when we arrived leaving us no choice but to place our bags on top of the cans. The internet signal was weak and there were only 2 TV's in the entire home with the best working being in the Dining Room which was not the most comfortable place to relax and watch. There were dishes in the cabinet that were not thoroughly cleaned. A frying pan still had a lot of grease sitting in the bottom and along the sides. There were spider webs all upstairs and in many of the closets. Lastly, the house is on a busy main street where large 18 wheelers frequently travel making if a little difficult backing out of the driveway. I'm not sure who's the responsible person for cleaning but there should be some over sight to make sure that any tenant's stay of pleasant at least during the week of the rental. This would have eliminated many of our core concerns. We loved the area and plan on coming back soon!

Owner's Response: Fish Camp has had many repeat customers over the three years we've been successfully renting it. We have over a 4.4 rating over the three-year period. If you had some things you were concerned about we would have been delighted to take care of them and given the opportunity to correct them. Unfortunately during the five days you were there we were never contacted or informed of a problem. We're sorry we didn't meet your expectations. Best of luck to you and yours in the coming new year. The stay was great, everyone enjoyed the time together.

  • 4 of 5

Several family members were able to spend time together that normally would not have been able to. The first night was so cold, due to a defective circuit breaker. It was 54' degrees in several rooms. The maintenance man fixed the problem early the next morning, the rest of our stay was great. I highly recommend the Fish Camp for your stay in Guntersville, AL.

The house was fine. The living room furniture was not very comfortable, but adequate. The bed slept great. The big fenced in yard was great. Little noisy from the trains and trucks from the plant. For guys fish camp would be great. A awesome double guarg that you can put two 21 ft boats in with no problem. Keep your gear safety locked up and out of the weather. There is a small public ramp down the road and you're less than ten minutes from larger public ramps around the lake. Minutes from food. As far as wives go it maybe missing that flare. Cheryl was very accommodating and replied promptly to messages.
