About the property

This 2-bed, 2-bath villa, a secret hideaway offers a tranquil, serene vacation

Overlooking the spectacular ocean at the front of the villa and surrounded by tropical forest, the breathtaking 360 degree panorama and the lush vegetation around the property will immerse you in tropical mood. Totally obscured from the world, your privacy is ensured as you soak up the Caribbean sun and you enjoy the intimate luxuries of a villa designed to put you at peace with the world. Surfside is an indoor/outdoor type of house with the living area being upstairs to take advantage of the high ceilings, views and breezes. The doors and windows on the sea side fold back to the extent that the indoor area merges with the deep verandah. The bedroom doors also fold back on the sea side, where there is also a deep verandah, and most of our guests sleep with just the screen doors which enables them enjoy the open aspect of the house and wake up to the sounds of the ocean and birdsong.

Surfside Gardens is only a two minute walk to the Cooten Bay ruin, the pebble beach and the fabulous North Shore surf. A short surfboard paddle around the headland each side of Cooten Bay, a five minute drive or decent hike will take you to the delightful sandy beaches of Lava Flow to the West and Josiah's Bay to the East.

There are just eight owner-occupied bespoke and individually designed homes on the entire Cooten Bay hillside, each on approximately one acre of land, which guarantees a secluded secret retreat even though you are only a ten minute drive away from the capital Road Town. Surfside Gardens is the lowest property on the hill and the closest to Cooten Bay ruins and ocean.

To get the best out of your visit we strongly recommend that you hire a car, preferably a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The car hire company that we recommend will leave the car where you arrive, either at the ferry-dock or the airport and you can leave the car there when you depart, all at no extra charge. On your arrival, we will meet you at a convenient meeting point, like the supermarket and escort you to the property. Guests normally let us know in advance if there is any provisioning they will require us to provide for their first 24 hours. The following day we can swing by the villa to see that everything is OK and if there is anything we can help with. Our guests choose how much interaction they want with us during their stay and we can be at the villa in 15 minutes if needed.

About Mark Chapman

I am a business consultant, principally serving cross border financial services clients. In 2014 my family and I took a year out to build our vacation villa at Cooten Bay in the British Virgin Islands.

Outside of work, family comes first and my boys, Tom, Ben and Joe respectively work in Property, Film and Professional Squash. Heather, who I have been married to for 30 years, does charity work and helps all of our lives run smoothly.

Additionally I spend time at Tortola Sports Club, where I play squash and I work on BVI Olympic Committee and Old Government House Museum matters as the Treasurer of both organisations.

Mark Chapman purchased this villa in 2009

Why Mark Chapman chose British Virgin Islands BVI

The family saw the hillside where the villa is located when we first came to live in the British Virgin Islands in 1995. We decided that if development lots ever came on the market, we would build our dream villa here in Cooten Bay. That finally happened 19 years later in 2014.

What makes this villa unique

The Chapman family, which is Mark (husband), Heather (wife), Tom, Ben and Joe (3 sons) have been involved with the Surfside Gardens dream from inception to the day our first guests arrived in late 2014. Every facet of the villa has been hand-picked, uniquely designed or tailor-made by one of the family members, from the chimneybreast, to the chandeliers, to the indoor/outdoor stone spa bathroom, to the stone and tiled patios, to the panoramic windows, to the french doors, to the gourmet kitchen and even down to the spectacular surrounding lush vegetation and fruit trees. We collected stones, rocks and boulders from the property as we built it and fashioned them into pillars, walls, pathways, and both bathrooms are entirely constructed of stone, making for the most natural environment imaginable. For the four years preceding the build we nurtured a vast array of fruit trees, palms and shrubs, ready for the day in 2014 when we would landscape the property. We designed the villa for Caribbean living - no air conditioning, just the sea breeze and fans in every room to circulate the air - no pool, just the ocean a few meters from the front door and panoramic windows and french door to brighten and lighten the indoor features.

peaceful elegance on beautiful bay

  • 5 of 5

We were only coming for a couple of days at the end of several days of island hopping, but was blown away by the beauty and peaceful surroundings we found at the Surfside Gardens. Simply spectacular, and the house was the nicest of our entire trip. Quite the special place, for anyone wanting to unplug and relax.

Paradise in Tortola

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Surfside Gardens Oct 29 - Nov 4 for our anniversary. Let me start by saying the property and the house are gorgeous and well-maintained. The views from the property are picturesque and absolutely breathtaking. The house has a fully equipped kitchen with all of the appliances, pots, pans and utensils you could need. The bathrooms are lovely and complete with plenty of towels. As beautiful as the house and surroundings are, what truly made our stay unforgettable was the hospitality of the owners. Just as other travelers have written, Heather was amazing from the day we first inquired about the property throughout the duration of our stay. She treated us like family! She guided us with helpful information every step of the way - from our ferry travel, to our rental car, our excursions and restaurant choices, and so much more. Her son guided us from the ferry dock to the house and she even had groceries waiting for us at the house on the evening of our arrival! There are plenty of maps and a folder at the house provided by the owners with information on the island and excursions - which we found extremely helpful. This truly is a special place and we would recommend it to any who are considering visiting the area. Thank you Heather for an unforgettable anniversary week!

Great time had by all!

  • 5 of 5

On this stay we had three generations together (ages 22-86) and we all had a wonderful time. The house is beautiful and breezy and the property around it breathtaking. The information book compiled by our host and hostess gave us spot-on information for an adventure filled visit on Tortola and beyond. Hoping to get back there soon.

Vacation of a lifetime!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a fabulous week in Tortola. First of all, Surfside Gardens is magnificent. Heather is helpful from the day you book to the day you depart. She offered so much information to help us plan a trip of a lifetime. All details were taken care of to make our arrival easy and relaxing. Heather had our kitchen stocked and met us at the ferry upon our arrival. The house is UNBELIEVABLE! From the open air floor plan and beautiful décor, the attention to detail is evident everywhere. The views from the balcony are spectacular and the landscaping is simpy beautiful. The quiet one acre private lot is surrounded by a tropical forrest that will leave you breathless. Other recommendations are to use Kevin (taxi in St. Thomas), rent private catamaran tours to The Baths and Jost Van Dyke (Aristocat Charters). See the beaches of Lava Flow, Long Bay on Beef Island, Smuggler's Cove...Lava Flow is close to the house and was our favorite! Eat at Tamarind Club, Fish n Lime (favorite) Sharky's and The Loose Mongoose.

Absolutely perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This house and location are PERFECT. Being familiar with the island, I wanted a place that was secluded yet close to town and Brewers Bay, Lava Flows, and Josiah's Bay (my favorite beaches - less tourists... Or NO tourists and beautiful.). Surfside gardens is this exact location! The panoramic view shows nothing, NOTHING except green jungle and blue oceans with islands in the background. There in amazing ruin a very short walk away that is super fun to check out. The drive to town is no more than 10 minutes, which is amazing for this island! So, you are secluded and yet can get where you want quickly. Heather is amazing - so kind and gracious with this home. The house has EVERYTHING you could possibly need and more. Fully stocked kitchen, beautiful appliances, beach chairs, a cooler, ice packs in the fridge, boogie (sp?) boards, guides to the island, everything!. My family and I loved it and will definitely stay again on our next visit back!

Owner's Response: Thanks Lisa for your lovely review. It's always difficult trying to get across how secluded the house is and yet so close to everything too. You have described it perfectly and I believe it will be a big help to people considering a stay with us. We really hope to see you again in the future.

Amazing, beautiful, secluded caribbean honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

I want to be back there right now!!! This place is amazing. My husband booked the place for our honeymoon- he kept it a surprise until we actually walked in the door. I was blown away. The house was beautifully decorated, perfect clean, and consistently had the wonderful ocean breeze whisping thru the kitchen.

We loved the trail to the beach, the outdoor shower, the open air construction, and the easy access to other beautiful beaches and islands.

Heather provided a kayak and snorkeling gear when we realized we had none and answered every question of ours that we had so quickly.

Our favorite outings were Virgin Gorda and Peter Island.

I loved sipping my coffee in morning, watching sailboats go by and enjoying the fresh breeze blow by.

You absolutely need a vehicle if you're headed here- but it is absolutely worth the extra cash. Driving is interesting here- but you mostly get used to it!

I need another honeymoon!!!

Thank you, Heather, for a wonderful stay!
