We are also a ten-minute walk to Uncle Robert's Awa Club - a genuine, Hawaiian-family-owned outdoor bar and market!

The house is very comfortable and has a lovely view of the ocean. Kalapana Shores extends to its guests a lovely piece of land just across the road toward the ocean. About Derryn

Aloha and welcome to our beautiful Halé on the Big Island. We are the owners, Derryn & Angela Ziebol and were married on our land in Kaimu. Both of us are professional Sign Language Interpreters, have a two-year old son & an infant daughter.

Known by our friends as DnA, we met while interpreting on a cruise ship in 2007 and share our love of travel and adventure with everyone we meet. We own a successful travel agency - DnA Travels, LLC ( and also like to spend summers at our lakeside cabin in Central Minnesota.

We are conscientious home owners, always improving and caring for this Hawaiian home. Located so close to the ocean always presents challenges so we have chosen the best house keepers, maintenance workers and a great property manager to keep our home in excellent shape for our guests to enjoy. We also have several family members living in Pahoa year-round who are always willing to assist guests and our neighbors are pretty great, too!

Your feedback and suggestions are important to us, so please let us know if there is anything we can do to improve your stay at Kalapana Shores. Thank you for visiting. Aloha.

Derryn purchased this house in 2010

Why Derryn chose Hawaii

When we decided to purchase a vacation rental home in Hawai'i, we were all about Puna! There's magic and serenity here. Pahoa, lower Puna, Kalapana & Kaimu hold a completely different vibe than Kona and even Hilo. You can actually feel the Aloha with each breath, taste the scent of natural landscapes and see the ever-changing beauty of the old lava flow just outside the door. On top of this, the hot tub is perfectly located with amazing views. Our neighbors are wonderful, our housecleaners are the best and our maintenance guy keeps the house running smooth!

We looked at many places back on 2010, but Kal Shores was the one! Built in 2007, this home was constructed to withstand the elements. It has an open floor plan, wrap-around lanai, awesome hot tub and only four other private homes on our little road. Unlike most other properties north of Kaimu on the Red Road, we are only partly solar powered and enjoy clean, filtered water pumped in from Pahoa. No need for water catchments or loud generators here. You can hear the waves crashing on the shore from the lanai.

Another big plus is that we are a 10 minute walk to the ocean and a 10 minute walk to Uncle Robert’s Awa Club - . We can’t say enough about this authentic Hawaiian family-owned business, so you’ll just have to go see for your self but trust us, it’s truly a slice of the Puna lifestyle.

Pahoa was just added to the Best Choice Review as on of the 50 Best Small Town Downtowns in America!

What makes this house unique

We absolutely love this home and it shows! When we purchased Kalapana Shores, the interior was painted all one color - pale blue. So the first project was to paint… everything. Angela picked out the colors and we went to work painting the whole interior ourselves. As you can see, the beautiful interior now compliments the whole environment.

The immediate property surrounding the home was all just dirt. Next project: landscaping. We brought in red and black cinder, planted 20 Eureka Palm trees, planted dozens of other plants that were gifted to us from neighbor's yards, created a pineapple ring in the back yard and made many friends in the process. The climate here causes plants to grow extremely fast so the landscape looks beautifully different every time we visit. Even the BBQ gets replaced every year due to the rust factor!

The unforgettable ocean views feel as if we’re out far away from civilization, but we also love the feeling of being 10 minutes from Pahoa. Even though we're part of the U.S., we’re still way out there in the middle of the Pacific so we like having great neighbors nearby. The coded, bamboo gate is a perfect security feature and there are so many fun places to explore.

If you like to go for a jog, the Red Road is the best!! Sometimes we take our morning coffee out to the lava and watch the sea turtles play in the blue, blue ocean waves. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on the tides; High tide is best for snorkeling at Kapoho Tidepools, swimming at Ahalanui Pool and surfing at Pohoiki!

Always with Aloha, enjoy!

More than pleased!

We loved our stay in this house. My parents and sister with her husband stayed downstairs and were comfortable and our family of 5 was upstairs. The hot tub was a highlight and got used every day. Everything was more spacious and bright than it even seems on the photos. Everything was clean and neat. And everything was as described online. I have to add that I was impressed by the nice blankets, linens and pillows. I love my own bed and pillow and was prepared to deal with whatever but I was pleasantly surprised by their nice blankets, duvet covers and soft and large pillows. The kitchen was very well stocked. (My husband is always surpised that only our family seems to use a cheese-slicer with the metal string across, so I won't fault anyone for not having one. :)) The binders were full of information about the house and the attractions in the area. We loved the location so close to the ocean entry of lava. The 8 mile round trip on bike was totally worth it to see that lava flow into the ocean at sunset. Amazing! We were in touch with the house-keeper who allowed us to come in earlier on the arrival day and stay later on the leaving day which greatly accommodated us. on our first day there it was Wednesday and were able to head over to Uncle Awa's place and see the dancers and hear the music and experience the festivities! It's a bummer that the lava overran the black sand beach right there. This was it was quite a drive to get to a sand beach unless the clothing optional one is to your liking, (which it wasn't for us!) But really we would come back in a heartbeat and I would recommend it to all my friends! It was a pleasure to work with Derryn and Angela. Thank you so much for sharing your home!! Blessings.

Everything was perfect

  • 5 of 5

Location of the house was great. Contact with the owner was great. View was great. Amenities were great. Proximity to the ocean was great. Hot tub was great. I can't think of one single negative thing to say about this place. Binders filled with suggestions of things to do were great. If you have not figured it out, I really liked the place and will definitely be returning.

Everything was perfect! To start, the house was easy to find. I was a little worried before arriving with family and friends but it turned out much nicer than I anticipated. House was clean, fresh towels, appliances, dishes, beach gear, even a washer and dryer both up and downstairs! The jacuzzi was a plus since there was no pool. I was worried about the house not having AC but with the doors/windows open the fresh ocean breeze was perfect. I'll definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting the island and I'd definitely stay here again if we come back!

Fabulous house in a gorgeous area!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Kalapana Shore House for two weeks and couldn't have been happier with the house, the owners, and the location. Our family of 6 moved into the upstairs house and enjoyed the lovely view of the lava fields and ocean each morning from the large lanai. The house was equipped with everything that we could possibly hope for and need during a stay. We absolutely adored this area of the island, from the gentle rains and mist each day, the wild mango and coconut trees everywhere to the geckos running around and the beautiful profusion of tropical plants. There was plenty of exploring to be done along the shoreline. We enjoyed the warm pools and snorkeling in the area quite often. The owners were very helpful and quick to respond if we had any questions or problems. We would highly recommend this vacation home!

Secluded and Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in a wonderful setting. The home was well equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable and relaxing time. 3 couples shared this for a week and everything was as promised. The property is well maintained and even our one small glitch (BBQ out of propane) was quickly corrected when the property maintenance came right away to fill it up. The beds were comfortable, towels for beach time were provided, the hot tub was relaxing, there was even snorkeling gear for our use (if we hadn't brought our own). We found a marvelous snorkeling location off the Kalapana-Kai road. We toured the island with day trips doing a north loop one day and a south loop another. The volcanoes national park is within easy driving distance too. All-in-all, a perfect vacation.. If seclusion is what you want, you'd find it here - it was a beautiful spot. We'd definitely return to use this property.

Peaceful Kalapana Retreat

  • 5 of 5

A few friends and I wanted to visit the Kalapana area as we had not been there since the area was overtaken by lava in 1990. We were fortunate enough to find this house which had plenty of room for all 10 of us and it was easy to locate even in the dark. The house was very clean and well maintained and the signs and instructions within the house were very helpful. It was nicely decorated and it had everything that we needed to cook our meals during our three day stay. We rented the entire house so having two kitchens for all of us was very helpful. The gas grill was great, the hot tub was a bonus and the fenced and gated yard made us feel secure. We explored the lava fields and shoreline fronting the house and walked to the farmer's market at Uncle Robert's down the road. It was a very enjoyable trip for everyone in our party and we are talking about doing it again next year.
