About Derryn

Aloha and welcome to our beautiful Halé on the Big Island of Hawai’i. We are the owners, Derryn & Angela Ziebol and were married in 2014 on our land in Kalapana. Both of us are professional Sign Language Interpreters, have two children and love sharing the Aloha of the Big Island.

Known by our friends as DnA, we met while interpreting on a cruise liner in 2007 and share our love of travel and adventure with everyone we meet. We own a successful travel agency - DnA Travels, LLC and also like to spend summers at our lakeside cabin in Central Minnesota.

We are conscientious home owners, always improving and caring for our Hawaiian home. Located so close to the ocean always presents challenges so we have chosen the best house keepers & maintenance workers to keep our home in excellent shape for our guests to enjoy. We also have family members living in Pahoa year-round who are always willing to assist guests and our neighbors are pretty great, too!

Your feedback and suggestions are important to us, so please let us know if there is anything we can do to improve your stay at Kalapana Shores.

Always with Aloha,

DnA

Derryn purchased this house in 2010

Why Derryn chose Puna District

When we decided to purchase a vacation rental home in Hawai'i, we were all about Puna! There's magic and serenity here. Pahoa, lower Puna, Kalapana & Kaimu hold a completely different vibe than Kona and even Hilo. You can actually feel the Aloha with each breath, taste the scent of natural landscapes and see the ever-changing beauty of the old lava flow just outside the door. On top of this, the hot tub is perfectly located with amazing views. Our neighbors are wonderful, our housecleaners are the best and our maintenance guy keeps the house running smooth!

We looked at many places back on 2010, but Kal Shores was the one! Built in 2007, this home was constructed to withstand the elements. It has an open floor plan, wrap-around lanai, awesome hot tub and only four other private homes on our little road. Unlike most other properties north of Kaimu on the Red Road, we are only partly solar powered and enjoy clean, filtered water pumped in from Pahoa. No need for water catchments or loud generators here. You can hear the waves crashing on the shore from the lanai.

Another big plus is that we are a 10 minute walk to the ocean and a 10 minute walk to Uncle Robert’s Awa Club - . We can’t say enough about this authentic Hawaiian family-owned business, so you’ll just have to go see for your self but trust us, it’s truly a slice of the Puna lifestyle.

Pahoa was just added to the Best Choice Review as on of the 50 Best Small Town Downtowns in America!

What makes this house unique

We absolutely love this home and it shows! When we purchased Kalapana Shores, the interior was painted all one color - pale blue. So the first project was to paint… everything. Angela picked out the colors and we went to work painting the whole interior ourselves. As you can see, the beautiful interior now compliments the whole environment.

The town of Kalapana is featured in Hawaii Magazine, March/April 2017 issue. The main focus on Uncle Robert's Awa Club and outdoor market is just a 10 min. walk from our home!

The town of Pahoa is just a 10 min drive from home. Pahoa is a fun throwback town from the '60's!

The immediate property surrounding the home was all just dirt. Next project: landscaping. We brought in red and black cinder, planted 20 Eureka Palm trees, planted dozens of other plants that were gifted to us from neighbor's yards, created a pineapple ring in the back yard and made many friends in the process. The climate here causes plants to grow extremely fast so the landscape looks beautifully different every time we visit. Even the BBQ gets replaced every year due to the rust factor!

The unforgettable ocean views feel as if we’re out far away from civilization, but we also love the feeling of being 10 minutes from Pahoa. Even though we're part of the U.S., we’re still way out there in the middle of the Pacific so we like having great neighbors nearby. The coded, bamboo gate is a perfect security feature and there are so many fun places to explore.

If you like to go for a jog, the Red Road is the best!! Sometimes we take our morning coffee out to the lava and watch the sea turtles play in the blue, blue ocean waves. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on the tides; High tide is best for snorkeling at Kapoho Tidepools, swimming at Ahalanui Pool and surfing at Pohoiki!

Always with Aloha, enjoy!

An Incredibly Memorable Experience!

  • 5 of 5

Oh my gosh! Our stay at Kalapana Shores was incredible. We were fortunate to rent the entire house for our party of 10 people. We first walked into the lower level and we were so impressed. Then we took a look at the top level and we were simply blown away! The house had everything that we needed to make our 3 night stay extremely comfortable for everyone. One of the best benefits was that the kids could roam around freely because the entire property is fenced in. They especially enjoyed playing pool and the hot tub! The master bed room upstairs was fabulous and our kids enjoyed having their own rooms. It was a bit hot but there were lots of ceiling fans and floor fans to make our stay still comfortable (an improvement would be to have AC but we did good without it too). We also had an added bonus when we learned about a gazebo in the distance and that it was apart of the property and that we could go there to access the lava field where our family enjoyed exploring the newly formed land. The owners did an incredible job in specifically detailing how to access the house and use the different codes for the house, garage and gate. I also really appreciated being able to call them when we had a few questions throughout the weekend. They were really accommodating and provided a great service. We would definitely rent this house again if we need to be in Kalapana. It was a home away from home and definitely better than staying at a hotel room! The price was affordable for us and we loved every bit of the experience. Mahalo Kalapana Shores! A hui hou!

Lovely home and location!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I wholeheartedly enjoyed staying here! It was very spacious and had absolutely everything we needed to make our stay extraordinary. We had the opportunity to cook a couple of meals in the large upstairs kitchen, as well as head out on the town for local food. We spent the majority of our time exploring the national park, hiking, and snorkeling. The hot tub was the perfect way to wind down after adventuring each day. Staying here was quite a treat and we would absolutely stay here again! Mahalo! :)

Absolutely an amazing experience!!

  • 5 of 5

I lived on the big island in Hilo for 3 years during college and have been back to visit many times. This was by far my favorite local spot. The house is simple but so cute, the location is perfect for the Wednesday night Kalapana market party, for exploring the volcano, and for spending relaxing afternoons in the warm pool at Kapoho. We felt like we were part of the community by the end of the week...which made it hard to leave. We will be back to enjoy this house and property again!!

A Gem in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Five of us shared his beautiful house, but only for 3 nights. This is a perfect place for an extended family or, as we were, a group of friends. It is spacious and airy, well furnished and well appointed. The kitchen has pretty much everything you would need for home cooking.

The beds were quite comfortable, and that's a big thing when you are vacationing. The upstairs lanai is huge and comfortable, with a view of the gorgeous plants, palms, and flowers and a nice peek at the ocean past the lava field.

We loved the location -- very close to Uncle Roberts' (but we missed the farmers market there), only a 10 minute drive into Pahoa, about that to the lava boat launching area, and right at the start of the very scenic "red road" that goes to the Kapoho tidal pools (Derryn and Angela even have snorkeling gear for guests to use). It is also a very short drive to the area where you can hike to see the lava flowing. There, you can hike to the active lava (4 miles each way) or you can rent bicycles for the trip.

Trying to think of any negatives, but just can't come up with any. This place pretty much has it all.

Clean, owners super accommodating, comfortable and everything you need.

  • 5 of 5

We needed somewhere to stay since the place we initially rented in kapoho was filthy and unsuitable for us. I reached out to Derryn and he got back to me immediately. He got us into their home as soon as it was clean and available. We were super grateful since this was an unexpected stay to say goodbye to my ill father who lives nearby. The place was super clean, had everything we needed to cook, enough towels for our party, a washer and dryer (so important when you have little ones), more than 1 fan in every room, comfy beds and linens, nice patio seating, super secure, and a hot tub which was nice to entertain the kids when we needed something easy to do. I'd stay here again hands down. The location is great and super close to the lava. You can actually see the steam rising from the lava flowing into the ocean in the kitchen as you wash dishes. This place was perfect and I would highly recommend staying here to anyone looking for a place on puna side. Their standards of cleanliness and the amenities were very high for this part of the island and I know because I grew up there.

Owner's Response: Aloha Jasmine Mahalo for your wonderful review, we're so glad we were able to accommodate you on such short notice - and at such a sad time for your family. We absolutely love staying at our Kalapana Shores home and sharing it with others. By the way... I, Derryn am a female. My wife Angela and I own the home and were married there on the gazebo several years back. Smiles... E komo mai, nou ka hale. DnA

This house was the exact size and location for our family and plans

  • 5 of 5

We wanted to explore the whole east coast the the Big Island with our family of nine, so this house was perfect, easy drives to the Black Sand Beach and Volcanoes National Park, but also the lava flows into the ocean and Akaka Falls. We watch the sky turn pink at sunrise from the deck. The house was very clean, with all the towels we needed, and all the instructions were very clear.
