A sweet Sanctuary setting for your eco-vacation accommodations
Cottage at the Ocean (CaO) is a hub for the numerous activities offered in this area of Big Island, Hawaii. We are situated adjacent to over 500 acres of State owned Oceanfront bluffs for hiking and meditation.
This is truly a magical area! Many of my guests leave feeling refreshed and renewed. The air quality here is some of the best in the United States.
To hear the ocean all night long, to watch the humpback whales right off the coastline all winter long is epic!
CaO is a 1 bedroom 1 bath 450 sq ft sanctuary space with a full kitchen, and private lanai for your outdoor relaxation. Surrounded by gardens and lush foliage, our area is quiet and peaceful.
The kitchen is fully equipped with high quality cook ware and a gas stove.

I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. There is as much of a social life in the Lower Puna area as any big city! I fell in love with this property in ’06 and purchased it with the idea of creating a sanctuary to grow old in. Prior to my ownership, this property was a part of a Buddist’s Meditation Center and it was direct oceanfront. In the 1990 lava flow, the property was preserved as the lava swept along the shoreline, taking out the beaches and forming new ones. This newly created land now belongs to the state. There is approximately 200’ of lava between Bali Temple and the Pacific Ocean! I saw myself living at this property forever, so I renovated it for 2 years in the style I wished to live, and it shows! Living on an active volcano on the 2nd largest mountain on the planet (next to Mauna Kea, the other volcano of Big Island) has its benefits…there is a magnetic energy here that many feel to be “Supercharged”, lending itself to the dynamic and creative spirits of our community members.
Rachaelle purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Rachaelle chose Kaimu
Kaimu enjoys the best weather on the island, according to most Hawaiians. More Hawaiians lived here then in any other location! Balmy nights, and 45' of rain each year, with sunshine filled days. No air conditioning or heating is needed; I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! What makes this Cottage unique
A natural setting as dramatic as that which Cottage at the Ocean enjoys is rare. The energy of the active volcano, whose lava flows just 10 or so miles away, is truly invigorating. Walks along the coastal bluffs directly in front of Bali Temple give you the experience of what Hawaii was like long wild, and sensual, with the 'Techni-Colors' of Hawaii's vivid ocean and sky blues, white puffy clouds, bright greens of the vegetation, and the sound of the crashing waves you hear all day and all night. At night, you will be in awe at the number and brightness of the star-lite skies!

I believe I live in one of the most magnificent places on earth, and I love to share the magic of Cottage at the Ocean and the surrounding areas with my guests. Cottage at the Ocean is located in the Lower Puna district of Big Island, and is an ideal hub for eco-adventurers. We are famous for the splendid natural surroundings, outdoor activities, and the plethora of yoga and wellness classes and workshops offered year round. Cottage at the Ocean is a Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, well furnished and well appointed Sanctuary Space awaiting your vacation and relaxation times ahead... Once you are here, these are the activities you will enjoy: VOLCANO: The #1 of all Tourist destinations in Hawaii right now is our active volcano. While you are here, and if you are in good physical shape, you can check with the local guides to hike out to the flowing lava. Pele’s flow comes and goes, so it is subject to change direction and location at any time. If the lava is flowing into the ocean, you can begin your hike in the afternoon, so that by the time you arrive at the flowing lava, you have time to settle into a beautiful sunset and see the lava flow at night, when you will have the brilliance of the contrasting lava against the darkness of the night. Be sure to bring a flashlight so you can hike back in the dark. The distance of the hike depends on where she is flowing. Other Lava adventures: boat tours, helicopter tours, Lava Tree state park located near Kapoho , and of course Volcano Nat'l Park, just 50 minutes away. RED ROAD TOUR (Route 137): To see the magnificence of Mauna Loa, you can walk out to the ocean, turn right, and hike along the ocean for miles. A 15 minute walk from Cottage, you will arrive at Kaimu Park, a black sand beach. You will see hundreds of young coconut trees…all replanted after the last 1992 lava flow. You can turn right onto the wide black sand trail where all of the baby coconuts are planted. This trail leads towards the mountain, and in a short distance you will end up at the “End of the Road” area, which is where Kaimu Corner, Kaimu convenience store, Uncle Robert’s Kava Bar (Kava Bar is only open at night), and Uncle Robert’s Wednesday night Market and Saturday morning Market. Kehena Beach: A favorite spot to spend many beach hours! Located just a few miles down the road from Cottage at the Ocean. Big surf is not the best for swimming though, so use caution. Early mornings around the full moon you may be visited by the wild spinner dolphins, known to visit in the bay…bring your fins, mask and snorkel if you wish to respectfully join them (no chasing or reaching out and touching them…just observe them please). Kehena is a clothing optional beach, so refrain from snapping photos…you will get an earful by the locals. Kalani Honua Resort: So many options to choose from at Kalani…located just 5 miles down the road from Cottage at the Ocean, offers “Ecstatic Dance” on Sunday mornings, with world class DJ’s spinning for your most ecstatic boogie pleasure. Each day of the week, there are on-going classes in yoga, Pilates, tai chi, and many other classes available for you to drop in. They also serve up tasty grinds for breakfast lunch and dinner. www.kalani.com to learn more. McKenzie State Park along the Red Road will land you at gorgeous cliffs overlooking the ocean. Be sure to walk the trail to the right of the parking area along the ocean. You will end up on the “King’s Trail”, used by the Hawaiian Kings as they made their annual tour of the island. There are lots of lava bluffs, coconut tree forests and awesome surf to take in! NOTE: Since Hurricane Iselle came through, there was extensive damage to the park, so they may be still closed for repairs while you are visiting. Warm Ponds: One of my favorite places in the area to visit are the Warm Pond. This is truly one of the most relaxing and rejuvenating experiences. Bring your fins, mask, snorkel, noodles, and anything else that you are comfortable floating with in the warm waters. Sometimes I will stay 4 to 5 hours! Kapoho Tide Pools: Great Snorkeling here! Green Lake: Located within a crater, surrounded by a wall of thick and lush foliage, it is remarkable. “Heaven on Earth”. Besides swimming in the lake, there are many beautiful areas to hike around, including following the dirt road to the top of the hill for some glorious views of the area. Lava Tree State Park: Give yourself at least 1 hour to stroll through this unique park, filled with lava trees. Closer to Hilo, you will find more Farmer's Markets throughout the week for your culinary pleasures, multiple Waterfalls and pools in Hilo and north Hilo, Hilo beaches, Akaka Falls, several Botanical gardens, zip lining, lava tube exploration, stargazing at the Mauna Kea Visitor's Center and the magnificent Waipio Valley.
