The river has some vary marked features with a channel of limestone, neatly chiseled as though by the hand of man; where there's rough, jagged, irregular and bristling with pitted and honey-combed formations; a narrow chasm over which a man may leap, there a wide deep abyss, eaten out of the solid rock, with erosion from the external pounding of water throughout the ages; caverns extending far back under the overlying strata, huge rocks and boulders everywhere in and along the channels At times the river bed is dry exposing fossils from thousands of years ago. AND THEN ................ at one notable point, the river bed opens up to the famous & historic "Flat Rocks"; a flat rock two hundred and fifty feet in width and twice as long, smooth as a flatiron and flat as a smoothing iron. Local people held 4th of July picnics and dances while a short distance below, at the mouth of Chimney Rock Branch, was a perennial ice house that preserved frozen snow and water used for making ice cream and lemonade.

About TJ Fisher

While on a WV Trout Fishing vacation, I was photographing the scenic beauty along the river and came upon this property for sale. After a tour, I purchased it that very evening.

With many family members who love the outdoors, it offered seasonal fishing, swimming, gardening, hiking, meditating and just plain old relaxing.

Shut your eyes and imagine breathing in fresh air, gentle breezes, nature all around me. Wildlife is plentiful as we watch from the windows facing the mountains and open fields.

With a Rhino 4-Wheeler, that my grandchildren named 'Lady Bug, we load up and meander to our Famous" Flat Rocks" on the north acreage where local folks danced and picnicked since the 1800's.

Sometimes, we catch a trout for dinner. Many lasting memories have been made by all our friends, family and new visitors who stop by and have some iced tea or just want to take a few pictures of the scenic Elk River.

Won't you share in our wonderful adventures at River Run Retreat?

TJ Fisher purchased this cabin in 2006

Why TJ Fisher chose West Virginia

River Run Retreat grounds me from all the hustle bustle of city life. The air is clean and waters are pristine. It truly is a bit of heaven for me, my family & friends.

The arms of Nature surround. You are nestled with beautiful flat meadows and the Monongahela National Forest on one side and the Elk Mtn on the other. The Elk River is a hidden secret with wildlife of an occasional Bald Eagle soaring over the river; some cranes rest in the flat limestone, deer cross the river and eat from the meadow grasses

This is why this property; "A Bit of Heaven"

This was a perfect get-a-way cabin. Nice location, close to the Elk Springs Resort and restaurant and not far from Snowshoe. Very spacious and homey. Perfect for fisherman, ATV enthusiasts, and nature lovers. Very relaxing atmosphere. Owner was very easy to deal with and helpful. We will definitely return.

Reviews are very important for anything and before I start with my review I feel the need to respond to the 1 negative I saw. That review couldnt of been more wrong and inappropriate for this Beautiful piece of Heaven.

The property was breath taking and the level of water in river will vary do to season & weather. The beauty of it was Beat of 2 worlds heres why. 1st you are able to hike and explore actual sections of river bed and then there are sections where it looks like hidden ponds to fish amd swim as well. I researched and many books have been written on this very property and river. Every local will tell you stories how they grew up swimming, fishing and playing k. Those very flat rocks.

My daughter and I talked to so many people who grew up there and had nithing but awesome memories.

The owner is a beautiful person and went out of her way on everything for us and you could hear the love in her voice for this property.

My daughter and I took so many pictures and the memories we now have are priceless from iyr stay.

Hats off to the owner, my family felt your love and passion for this Piece of Heaven it was everything and more that you said it would be.

What a great place to stay! (Our 2nd time) Very comfortable cabin with a beautiful view of the surrounding maintains. Right in the middle of Trout fishing heaven and if you ever wanted to try Fly fishing, they have an Orvis facility down the road. Highly recommended. Very family friendly and we plan on going back very soon. You can actually un-wind here.

Love River Run Retreat! Stayed multiple times since 2007. Live in Florida,West Virginia is my home state. We held our family reunion there in 2010 before my husband died. Family members came from all over the United States had the best time trout fishing and walking in the beautiful countryside. Last time there was Memorial Day 2016 hated to leave. Great fishing!

A river does NOT run through it. ..

  • 1 of 5

Stayed here with my three boys and my wife for our 20th anniversary. When we arrived we were surprised to see the property was for sale. I started to unload the van while the kids went down to look at the river. They came back to inform me the river was completely dry. I went to see for myself and sure enough there was no water. I called the homeowner who assured me that while the area right behind the house was dry, if we looked further downstream we would find the river on her property. The next day we hiked the entire length of the "river" on her property all the way down to Elk Springs retreat and sure enough it was dry the entire way. All we found were three stagnant puddles which held nothing but tadpoles and mosquito larvae. The house is located on Dry Branch road and now I know why. I communicated my displeasure with the homeowner who claimed she wasn't responsible for the weather or the condition of the river. West Virginia has received record rainfall this year so I suspect this headwater is usually dry. The homeowner was very defensive and sent pictures of her family enjoying the river. It's a dry river bed, I am sure water does run through it occasionally just not when she rents it out. She also stated she has rented it out to professional fishermen and never had any complaints. I am sure that even the most skilled fisherman can't catch fish in a dry river. The cabin itself had missing or damaged screens, screen doors which were off the track, and a "scenic" overlook of the dry river bed with a broken bench. We were supposed to have 22 pristine acres all to our own to fish and explore and we got zero. We ended up having to take a number of expensive day trips to salvage the vacation and since this home is at least an hour from anything you spend a lot of your vacation in the car. It is my opinion the homeowner purposely misrepresented the property. As my three boys and I walked back from the dry river sad and dejected with our fishing gear my oldest son said, "We got taken didn't we Dad?" Yes we did. Don't let the same thing happen to you.

Owner's Response: The Elk River DOES RUN Through It.. River Run Retreat has been rented to over 30 different groups/families/professional fly fishermen , and 2 families from Europe in the past 12 months, and I did not receive one negative review or complaint. Their reviews are left on a form that Guests complete and leave in the cabin at Check-Out instead of online. I do this as a convenience to Guests who stay with us. I am always available via cell phone at any time day or night. Many of my Guests are return Guests which says a lot about my rental property.. Occasionally the Guests will accidentally break a glass coffee pot, damage a screen, break something, or leave a mess, but my staff who have been with me a long time are Johnny on the Spot”.” The Guests should let me know immediately so that it can be fixed. This Guest did not inform me of anything that was not working, like the screen door which his 3 little boys broke. For spite, at departure, Mr. Al also left the cabin total unlocked/not protected and all windows opened allowing rain to pour in and soak the floors. The only Guest (Al) who gave this negative review had never stayed in a rural cabin or rural area before and obviously didn’t like being an hour from the business of a town. The Elk River is part of my property for 22 acres and runs along the Monongahela National Forest which borders my property. The Elk Springs Fly Fishing Resort is ½ mile north of my property within walking distance and is also located on the Elk River. Hunting and Fishing are not allowed on my property since it is a natural preserve for wildlife and I protect the famous “Flat Rocks” that is a natural wonder and written about in several books; “The Talk of The Elk”, by William Byrne and “The Upper Elk” by Skip Johnson. If any Guest should ever call with any issue, I immediately have 3 staff who will assist and fix problems not caused by nature. Unfortunately, I cannot control the weather or natural conditions; neither do I know when a dry spell or drought may happen. There is great access to fishing available at the Elk Springs Resort ½ mile north on the Elk River Road. And, swimming at the Whittaker falls is a favorite place for trout fishing and sunning on the rocks in the summer. My property is beautiful and tranquil. If you are expecting to stay in the Hilton; it is not the Hilton. It is however, comfortable, very clean and furnished with most items you will need. Truthfully submitted, The Owner
