About Joe and Cheri Hoff

We have been owners of the Glacier Highland, a restaurant and motel in West Glacier for 23 years. Our business has been run by ourselves and our children, with the help of some fabulous employees.

Joe and Cheri Hoff purchased this house in 1995

Why Joe and Cheri Hoff chose Glacier Country

We have owned the land this home was built for just over 19 years and have always wanted to build a beautiful home on it. Our family enjoys swimming and picnics and Spoon Lake every summer, a special getaway for us from our business in West Glacier. The Forest Service owns a large portion of the land that surrounds Spoon Lake, which keeps the lake very private and quiet. Spoon Lake is a very special treasure!!

What makes this house unique

A large fire pit by the lake will be available for roasting marshmallows and hot dogs!

Another unique attraction about Spoon Lake are the loons calling back and forth to each other in the evening. So many of the contractors and people helping us build our home at Spoon Lake have commented on this property as "priceless". I truly can attest to that! Quiet, serene and a magical place on earth.

Simply a very pleasant stay

  • 5 of 5

Joe and Cheri have a lovely property that we each and all enjoyed tremendously. We were a group of 5 including my wife and I, two adult children and a significant other. A modern, clean and well designed property with wonderful views. In addition to the views of the nearby foothills, the song of the loons we watched an osprey hunting from a nearby tree and had a curious rufus hummingbird visit me on the porch. Location 25 minutes from the West Glacier entrance to the park this was a great base for activities on the west side of the park. We also enjoyed the canoe and paddleboards.

Well-appointed home on the water near Glacier NP

  • 4 of 5

We loved the open floor plan on the first floor of this quiet, lake-side home! The kitchen, with plenty of island and table seating, was perfect for our family of 5 adults. It was well-appointed and had everything that I needed to cook dinner a few times during our stay and the outdoor grill came in handy as well. The first floor living room was also comfortable and media-free. We definitely used the gas fireplace when the mornings were cool! We also used the paddle boards and canoe to enjoy Spoon Lake from the water, made a bonfire in the fire pit, and generally loved the absolute quiet of this lovely house.

We used the home as a base to explore Glacier NP, Kalispell, Bigfork, and Whitefish. We did the classic Red Bus Crown of the Continent Tour, saw Glacier from above with Glacier Heli Tours, had a family portrait taken in Bigfork with Marianne Wiest Photography (highly recommend!), rented bikes in Kalispell and rode the Rails-to-trails Great Northern trail, AND just hung around the house, sitting by the lake with a good book.

The ONLY negative to this property and the reason I withheld one star was the lack of a landline telephone and the lack of cell reception and weak internet (we have AT&T---maybe Verizon has better coverage?). We needed to use the phone to make inquiries and dinner reservations, and we had to walk up to the road in order to do that. Additionally, a stronger/faster WiFi connection would have been helpful to research trails and the many activities available in the area---the internet is very slow in the home, even if just web-browsing. I also think it would be nice if the hosts would provide a bit more information about the house and surrounding area---some favorite restaurants, directions to the dock, label switches, etc---this information would have helped us settle in more quickly.

All-in-all, this home is stunning and extremely comfortable and we had a fabulous family vacation there--and I am sure you will too!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and I am happy you enjoyed the property. It is a beautiful home. Because of the location of this home, being on a lake way from major cities, we do not have all of the conveniences that people are accustomed to. AT&T cell service does not work in the Glacier Park area. Verizon cell service, however, does work i this area. The wifi is supplied by Hughes Satellite. It is not as reliable as most cable company's service, but satellite internet is the only option at this time for the Spoon Lake area. We will be working on a folder to keep in the house with information about the surrounding area, such as restaurant and shopping areas, as well as, important information regarding our property. Thank you for that feedback.

Beautiful spot to use as a basecamp

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 days at this house and found it to be well equipped to handle our group of 9 people. Beautifully built home with plenty of room and the lake is an added bonus. The hoff's also supplied paddle boards, a row boat and a canoe, which were a lot of fun. We spent our days in Glacier National Park doing various day hikes. It's about a 20 minute drive to the gate of the park from the house. The only suggestion I have for Joe and Cheri is to include a book with some information on the house and area (wifi code, your favorite hikes in Glacier, restaurants etc..). Thanks for a wonderful time in Montana!!
