I am a wife and mother of three active boys who love to fish and kayak in the creek. I am also a school counselor in one of the local schools. I am originally from Levittown, outside of Philadelphia. I attended Neshaminy Maple Point.
I am an HGTV addict which inspired me to take this "too rustic " cabin and make it beautiful.
I attending Bloomsburg University, Indiana University, Bucknell University, and completed my doctorate at Liberty University.
I want all my guests to have a relaxing, comfortable stay.
Brenda purchased this cottage in 2014
This vacation home is named the 'Bear Den' for a reason.
I purchased this property and had it totally renovated. I walked by it everyday as I walked my dogs and always thought about the lovely view it had. It was an "unkept" cabin and no one had every lived in it. The story of the home is that it was to be college housing at a college in Virginia. It was prefabricated but it didn't make it off the truck properly and the college refused it. A gentleman in Central PA purchased it and put it in it's current location. He began to work on it but could not finish due to a shoulder injury. So, unfortunately, no one got to take advantage of this home and lot. I called him and asked if he wanted to sell and he did.
We named it the 'Bear Den' due to during it's many years of being uninhabited, a mother bear and her cubs hibernated in the crawl space underneath. She surprised some men working on the road one winter. Now her story is legend around the neighborhood. She is still around but don't worry, she hasn't used that space in years and there is a door on the crawl space entry now anyway. We had to name it the 'Bear Den' since she was the first true occupant.
I had everything torn out down to the studs and including the insolation and added a second floor loft to take advantage of the sites. The layout is simple and open while quality construction and furnishings were used.
It is a lovely country setting along a lazy wide creek in a location with interesting sites to visit. The water view and sounds can be enjoyed on the front porch or by taking a walk along the road. The creek brings wildlife such as the beautiful blue heron and Eagles. It has a relaxing feel but still includes modern conveniences like wifi. Come and sit on the large front porch overlooking Penns Creek.
My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Brenda's home. We got to meet her and she went over everything in the house for us. I way over packed as she had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The house is so tastefully decorated and very clean. We would definitely recommend her home for your stay in the Mifflinburg area. The area itself is beautiful and the Penns Creek is right across the street which was great as my husband loves to fish!
V quiet place. V clean and organized. Has backyard with fire pit and grill which your can enjoy. Brenda is v nice and courteous. Totally enjoyed our stay.
The cabin is beautiful, with everyone you need! We had a lot of fun taking day trips, and Kayaking on Lake Augusta in Sunbury. Bring your innner tubes! There is public access to the creek 1/2 mile down from cabin, the kids had a ton of fun floating down the creek. Make sure you spend time drinking your tea on the front porch in the morning to catch a view of the heron or eagle!
This is the perfect vacation house. It has a great layout for a family and is beautifully maintained and clean. The charming cottage decor is inviting and comfortable. The Penn's Creek location is scenic and peaceful. The house has a great front porch. The Amish girls ride by in their buggies and wave. There are blue heron, geese and ducks on the water. We are happy that we chose it. Thanks for letting us stay.
Our recent visit to Bear Den Cabin could hardly have been more perfect. The cabin is very tastefully decorated, bright and spacious.
Having grown up in the area the cabin was perfectly situated for visiting family. Being a large family we really appreciated the ample space and home life comforts of the cabin.
We aren't really big on eating out so staying somewhere where we can prepare our own meals is a big plus. The cabin kitchen is well supplied with cookware and ample dishes.
Even though the days were hot we still managed to enjoy the beautiful patio and fire pit, but my favourite experience of the visit was enjoying a cup of tea on the front porch each morning.
If you're travelling with kids, don't forget to check the drawer under the stairs for an assortment of games. We had brought some with us, but the kids didn't touch them in favour of the novelty of the new games provided at the cottage.
Brenda is a friendly and responsive host. She answered all our questions in a timely fashion and was very accommodating. She went above and beyond to meet our needs for which we were very appreciative.
We look forward to coming back on our next trip "home".
A photo of the cabin prior to restoration hung in the kitchen is a testament to the care and attention to detail that went into this cottage. It is perfectly clean in every sense. Although a minor point, the listing notes "three separate bedrooms, two of them in a unique loft area"; these two bedrooms actually share the same floor space with no wall or separation between; which is consistent with the definition of a "loft". The bedroom on the first floor is completely private. The owners have very good taste in their selection of furniture, building materials and accommodations The fire pit in the back came in handy, and the porch in front was very comfortable. Penns creek is directly across the street. There is some, but not much traffic on the street.
