Our perfectly located, beautifully furnished and fully renovated townhouse in Provence will be available for rent through the 2016 summer vacation.
RESERVE NOW FOR THE 2016 AVIGNON INTERNATIONAL THEATER FESTIVAL.
The house is on a quiet street, just steps from Avignon's bustling center and famous ramparts. Bakeries, butcher shops, greengrocers, Asian markets, the central post office and train station, numerous banks, schools, the university and even the Avignon Opera and the historic Papal Palace (to say nothing of the famous "pont" of "Sur le pont d'Avignon..." fame) are all within easy walking distance.
The neighbors are friendly and helpful. The tinkling fountain adds a relaxing note to the shaded courtyard. And there is FREE PARKING, a big plus for travelers who'll be renting a car, and an amenity not available at most rental properties within the town walls.
We love the fact that our house faces south and is bathed on all three levels with warm, natural light. Ceilings are high, windows are tall.
The fully-equipped, open kitchen has custom cabinets, a 5-burner range, a dishwasher and an American-style refrigerator with ice maker and filtered water dispenser.
Most of the furniture and light fixtures are Art Deco style from the 1930's. Nothing from IKEA! Mattresses, linens and towels are all virtually new.
Two of the bedrooms have full-sized beds; one has twin beds. On the second floor there is a large bath with claw foot tub, pedestal sink and shower. The toilet is separate. On the third floor there is a smaller full bath with shower.
Washer, dryer and and small "summer kitchen" are in the basement with direct access to the courtyard.
The shady courtyard has a small fountain that runs in the summer and fall, adding a romantic touch to outdoor meals.
We moved to Avignon in 2011 so our children would learn another culture and another language. Woody is a retired school administrator, Pauline a doctor and writer.

We chose Avignon for its sunny climate, rich cultural opportunities and convenient location. The Marseille airport is just an hour away by car or train. Paris only about 4 hours by fast train. All the famous attractions of Provence are easily accessible by car. And we chose the house for its old world charm, its natural light and its perfect location.
Walk to everything!
Wow! This was a perfect location for our two week stay in Provence. A comfortable home from which to launch on our daily excursions. A two block walk takes you inside the walls of this beautiful medieval town. I'm reviewing the house, so I'll skip Avignon itself, but trust me, it is worth several days of wandering and exploration. The house itself is comfortable and charming. Stairs are part of the deal, so plan on going upstairs for bedroom and bathroom. The main floor has a spacious modern kitchen and a large dining table. When our group of six people wanted to eat in it was easy. The other room on the main floor is a modest size living room which would be perfect with some more comfortable furniture. The bedrooms and beds are comfortable and airy; high ceilings add to the charm. Pauline and Woody have made life easy for visitors with an extensive manual that covers everything about the house as well as shopping, restaurants and more. Because we had a car we were able to explore towns and sights in all directions, and the manual covered those options as well. Avignon's central location is perfect for those excursions and of course it helps that the airport in Marseille is less than an hour from the house. In retrospect this home and its location made for one of our best family vacations ever. We recommend it highly.
We stayed a week at Woody and Pauline's property in May 2016. The home is centrally located to visit Provence, and our husbands biked the local roads and mountains. It was a short walk to the walls of Avignon, where we had dinners, but the full-sized kitchen allowed us to relax and have our other meals in the peaceful courtyard. Although there were a few glitches (phone/TV), Woody was quick to respond and ensure all was well.
I would recommend this property, and hope to return in the future.
This property can best be described as a Home, not a rental property. It is truly a residence and not an income generating piece of real estate. There was a minor mix up on the arrival dates so no one was there when we arrived, but within minutes after calling Woody, two neighbors showed up with keys to let us in, and the cleaning lady arrived shortly after to make sure all was in order. The house was comfortable and well equipped. Woody and Pauline, the owners have a wonderful handbook with guidance to the local area and shops, bakeries, butchers, markets. If you stay, you must go to Bens and Mohammeds for meats and fruits. The home sits on a very narrow street but has a garage where you can store your car in a locked garage overnight. A real bonus if you are driving. The only minor issue we had was with the living room. A larger sofa and chairs would have been an improvement but would not preclude renting again. You are truly within walking distance of all Avignon points of interest, and easily within driving distance of everything else
Lovely three story house with flower-filled courtyard was comfortable and clean, only a 7 minute walk to Avignon "inside the walls." A half-hour drive to the Pont du Gard Roman aquaduct, just over an hour's drive to Marseille's old port, this house is in a great location. The local train is five minutes from the house, and the TGV station (which has rental cars) is a 15 minute drive away. Great croissants and bread a 1 minute walk from the house. With parking and laundry included, everything's here. The owners responded quickly to all questions and were a pleasure to work with. We even stayed a few extra days!
This is a delightful property - not only spacious and comfortable, but filled with myriad personal touches (from furniture down to photos) that make it clear that it is a beloved home, not merely a vacation rental, and that Woody and Pauline put time into making it both welcoming and distinctive. Though writing from Asia when we visited - we still have never met - Woody was always friendly, responsive, and helpful by email. The property is on a quiet residential street a few blocks outside Avignon's city walls, and thus in a neighborhood that makes you feel like a resident rather than a tourist. But the house is close enough to everything that you can simply walk to the sights - or to dinner in the center of town, if you choose not to cook in the well-appointed kitchen. This would be a good choice both for visitors to Avignon who do not have a car, or (assuming the garage is available, as it was for us) as a base for exploring more of Provence by car.
One minor caution: the check-in was achieved by meeting Woody and Pauline's housekeeper at the house, and she does not speak much of any English (she is fluent in Spanish and French). She was friendly and patient, and I imagine that it would have gone just fine even if we spoke neither of those languages, but the process was definitely facilitated by being able to converse (and make pick-up arrangements via text message) in Spanish.
But with that one trivial logistical caveat - which should not deter most users of this site - you should not hesitate to rent here. The description is fully accurate, and indeed understates the comfort and convenience of this property. We were sad to leave and hope to come back.
Pauline and Woody's house is a very comfortable and well-located spot from which to
explore Avignon and the region. We found the photos to be very representative of
the house, which was a charming blend of period furniture, historic architecture and
modern comforts. Woody and Pauline were gracious hosts, quick to answer any
queries and full of information on Avignon and the surrounding area.
We quickly felt immersed in our new (temporary) home and were sad to say goodbye
after a week's stay.
Avignon is in the heart of Provence and the Côtes du Rhone wine region. It is most famous for the Palace of the Popes and the summer theater festival; but offers restaurants, museums, art movies, hikes, antiquing and concerts (including Opera) year-round. St. Remy de Provence, Les Baux, Arles and the Camargue beaches and bird preserve are all nearby to the south. The Roman theater in Orange is an easy drive to the north, as are Chateauneuf du Pape, Vaison la Romaine, Fontaine de Vaucluse and well-known wine towns such as Seguret and Rasteau. The incredible Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard, is just across the river to the east, as is our favorite family run winery.
