Hale Keaukaha is a majestic and elegant 1937 home perfectly situated across from Hilo’s Richardson’s Beach Park, a gorgeous black sand beach ideal for snorkeling, surfing, swimming, kayaking and sunbathing. Minutes from downtown Hilo, and the airport, the location is convenient and picturesque. Your stay at Hale Keaukaha will be an authentic and luxurious Hawaiian experience.

About Hale Keaukaha

A one-of-a-kind kamaaina home in Hilo. Styled for Hawaii, with a roof design of Hawaiian architecture called a Dickey roof, that has a Polynesian style inspired by Kamehameha V's beach house in Waikiki. The floors in the main house are ohia wood, which is unique to Hawaii.

In the neighborhood called Keaukaha, about which songs are written and hula performed. The coastline is a string of beach parks, some with black sand and many with water access. This is a local playground. The water near the shore is clear with excellent snorkeling. Sea turtles come in to rest on the rocks across the street from the house.

The front bedroom looks down the driveway at the ocean, as does the shower in the attached bath. The luxurious queen bedroom is spacious with fine linens, robes and a ceiling fan.

The master bedroom is quite large. In the back of the house looking at the lava rock seating in the back yard. The elegant king bed has fine linens and the room has a ceiling fan and walk in closet. The attached bath has been kept in the charming 1930's style with updated fixtures and amenities.

The bedroom linens are often organic, or Italian poplin sheets.

The kitchen is fully stocked with espresso/coffee maker, rice cooker, microwave, toaster oven, waffle maker, blender, good knives, wine glasses, and all kitchen utensils.

The house water is all filtered, with the kitchen having an additional filter.

Weber bbq grill is outside the kitchen.

The house has a separate ohana (attached loft apartment) complete with a full kitchen, walk in shower and bathroom, living and dining area with loft bedroom and closet. The kitchen cabinets are koa wood, a prized Hawaii wood. The loft bedroom is paneled in lauhala, a local weave from the hala tree. The ohana has a full kitchen (except that it doesn't have a stove due to insurance requirements), with good espresso maker, microwave, toaster oven, blender. The ohana living room faces the green back yard and tree ferns and has a private entrance.The comfortable queen bed is in the spacious loft with skylight.

Both the ohana and the main house have 50" smart televisions, DVD players, wireless internet access. The main house has a telephone with free mainland calling.

The home features local art from Avi Kiriaty, Peggy Hopper, Roger Whitlock, Jack Lord, and other local artists.

20' ceiling in main room. Dining table, comfortable seating in living room to relax or to look out at the water; second lounging area in family room with tv, breakfast table.

Cleaning supplies are organic, green, and where possible, scent free.

Hilo does have coqui frogs that chirp in the evening and an occasional rooster crow. We provide ear plugs for light sleepers.

House Rules

Hale Keaukaha is situated along a residential street with neighbors. We appreciate your cooperation to keep noise to a respectful level.

No smoking on property.

No parties at all, including dinner parties or off-property guests for bbqs or other casual get-togethers, or any guests not listed on the rental agreement without the prior consent of the property owners and manager.

No pets allowed without the consent of the property owner and manager.

Please let us know right away if anything gets damaged or needs fixing.

The home is appointed with books, decor and amenities to use during your stay. Please do not remove anything from the home and care for them as your own.

What a privilege to stay at such a beautiful, historic, well appointed, ideally located home! A gracious, classic 1920s era home that has been meticulously maintained and upgraded! Beautiful layout, spacious common areas and very large bedrooms and bathrooms. Spectacular vintage cabinet work and tasteful decorator details. The kitchen is extremely well outfitted with beautiful plates, stemware, chefs knives and the like. Beautiful linens and lovely toiletries selections. But, the best thing about the house is the location! Directly across the Street for one of Hilo's most popular and lovely beaches, Richardson Park. Clear springs and great snorkeling, is a classic Keaukaha beach venue. Perfect for kids and lounging around under the trees. So nice to just walk across the street and jump in the water! Yes, the coqui frogs are in residence but with so many of them singing, it becomes white noise. Ear plugs are available in the laundry closet. The barking dogs mentioned another reviews were nonexistent during our stay. There is not a better spot in all of Hilo for a vacation! Very central to adventures of all kinds including downtown Hilo, up the Hamakua coast, Volcano national park , and Puna district. I will be back!!

Beautiful, cozy place for a wonderful vacation!

My boyfriend and I stayed at this cute little bungalow in Hilo. The place was the perfect location close to restaurants and across the street from Richardson Park. We woke up one more and walked across the street to watch the sunrise and saw a bunch of turtles enjoying a morning swim/breakfast.

If you're looking for a good place for breakfast I would highly recommend Paul's Place - make sure you call a day ahead to get a reservation. Best food in Hilo.

Nicole (the owner) was very accommodating for our late check-in. She was very professional and helped us find the tucked away place in the dark. She had local coffee and a pineapple as a welcome gift.

The one thing we weren't expecting was the no central air conditioning - it wasn't a huge issue once we opened all of the windows. It was nice to hear the frogs singing us to sleep every night.

We stayed here the first half of the trip then to the other side of the island the second half in Kona. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip!

Beautiful home across from scenic lava beaches.

My husband and I spent a week at this home while visiting our son and his family in Hilo. I just loved the old Hawaiian feeling of the home. It was spotless, comfortable and well equipped. We had great weather with a small amount of rain. The kitchen is well equipped with nice glassware, appliances and dishes. The house instructions are very thorough and useful. The TV worked easily. In the early mornings I made coffee and walked across the street to the beach to enjoy the surf and hear the birds. It was just so beautiful. The house is quite private set in a nice neighborhood. There is a noise curfew at 10pm which was followed by the neighbors. There are frogs, birds, chickens and dogs that do make noise but they were never a problem for us. This is a very nice home and I would enjoy staying here again when I come back to Hilo. It would be nice if the owners were more flexible for having guests at the home. I know the home is very nice but it seems a bit restrictive.

Hard to leave!

This house is just like the pictures and it is amazing! Each detail is taken care of and at the same time it's lowkey and really relaxing. I love that it is a good location for going to see the lava and also for hanging in the sun and snorkeling across the street. I stayed here before and this time met up with friends from the mainland, who also loved it. You have to be okay with coquis to stay in Hilo so keep that in mind. I did hear the neighbor dogs last time but not this time. The closest restaurant is about a mile away and a little past that is the closest store, and then after that you're in Hilo town, so everything is pretty close. The location is overall terrific and I will be back.

Excellent home and location!

We are two couples who shared this lovely home for 2 nights while exploring the Hilo area. It is north of Hilo across from Richardson Park. The home was lovely, spacious and airy. Beds very comfortable. House very clean and welcoming. The location was also lovely: a view of the ocean from the living room and easy out the door, across the road to a walk along the ocean side and its many little protected pools. These parks are very busy on the weekend but quiet down considerably on the weekdays. People swim and surf here. Mostly locals. The house is located close to other homes but we didn't notice any noise at night and felt fairly private. We would highly recommend this house to anyone wanting to stay on the Hilo side and be near the water.

Second visit to this beautiful home

We come to Hilo often to visit our daughter and are very happy we recently found this place. We are ocean people and get in the ocean across the street at least once a day, and it is a stunning shoreline with small black sand beaches for a few miles along the road, with rocky areas and fresh water upwellings. We didn't fully appreciate it until we had the chance to get in the water while staying here, as otherwise Hilo doesn't have much water access. The house is immaculately kept and very well equipped. A bag of coffee was the welcome gift and we used the french press each morning and walked out to the water or sat in the front yard. The home is just very serene and relaxing and beautiful, and we make sure to take good care of everything as we will keep coming back.
