Minutes from downtown Hilo, and the airport, the location is convenient and picturesque. Your stay at Hale Keaukaha will be an authentic and luxurious Hawaiian experience. Perfect for couples.
Sorry, no rentals over 7 days. No long term rentals.
Please note: The listing price is for two people per night, with a charge for each additional person (per night), maximum six people. Unfortunately, VRBO does not put this into the rental rate and instead it appears on your invoice as a "host fee." The only fee we actually have is the cleaning fee.
About Hale Keaukaha
A one-of-a-kind kamaaina home in Hilo. Styled for Hawaii, with a roof design of Hawaiian architecture called a Dickey roof that has a Polynesian style inspired by Kamehameha V's beach house in Waikiki. The wood floors in the main house are made of ohia, unique to Hawaii.
In the neighborhood called Keaukaha, about which songs are written and hula performed. The coastline is a string of beach parks, some with black sand and many with water access. This is a local playground. The water near the shore is clear with excellent snorkeling. Sea turtles come in to rest on the rocks across the street from the house.
The front bedroom looks down the driveway at the ocean, as does the shower in the attached bath. The luxurious queen bedroom is spacious with good linens, robes, a ceiling fan and a floor fan.
The master bedroom is quite large. In the back of the house looking at the lava rock seating in the back yard. The elegant king bed has fine linens and the room has a ceiling fan, a floor fan, and walk in closet. The attached bath has been kept in the charming 1930's style with updated fixtures and amenities.
The house has a separate ohana (attached loft apartment) complete with a bedroom, half-kitchen, walk in shower and bathroom, living and dining area with the loft bedroom. (Note that this is not suitable for children.) The kitchen cabinets are koa wood, a prized Hawaii wood. The loft bedroom is paneled in lauhala, a local weave from the hala tree. The ohana has a kitchen with espresso maker, toaster oven (no oven or stove). The ohana living room faces the green back yard and tree ferns and has a private entrance. The comfortable queen bed is in the spacious loft with a skylight. Inquire if you need this included in the rental.
The bedroom linens are usually organic and always all cotton. Each bedroom has a ceiling fan and a tower fan.
The kitchen has period-appropriate Formica counters. It is stocked with espresso/coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven, waffle maker, blender, good knives, wine glasses, and all kitchen utensils. The house water is all filtered, with the kitchen having an additional filter. Weber bbq grill is outside the kitchen.
The main house has a smart television, DVD player, good wireless internet access that includes the ohana. Like most houses in Hawaii, it does not have a/c.
The home features local art from Avi Kiriaty, Peggy Hopper, Roger Whitlock, Jack Lord, and other local artists.
Cleaning supplies are, wherever possible, organic, green, and scent free. (We have made an exception during and since Covid and use Clorox and Lysol between guests.)
Accessibility: There are several steps up into the house from both front and back, and the Ohana has stairs to the loft bedroom and from the front room to the bath/bed area.
Hilo does have coqui frogs that chirp in the evening/night and an occasional rooster. We provide ear plugs for light sleepers and also recommend using floor fans for white noise.

This property and location are in the most lovely and local style settings. The house is welcoming, clean and well equipped with anything you could possibly need while being so very "Hawaiian elegantly". The house is right across the street from one of Hilo's beautiful beach parks yet set back just enough to allow for a perfectly privet getaway. A must stay !
Very pleasant location nestled across the road from a shoreline park and oceanic access. It's beautiful views allow this cozy older home with updated feature to make you feel part or the cultural and historical engagement of Hilo. Great host and location that is well worth the money.
Beautiful setting in a quiet neighborhood that is lusciously landscaped. Close to the shoreline for walks and, although limited, the views the are great.
The property was everything we could have wanted. Great comfortable indoor spaces with ability to have open doors and windows to let outside in. We also enjoyed sitting outside. Conviently located across the street from beach including Richardson’s Ocean Park with its black sand beach and turtles. Easy drive into Hilo for dining. Althea and Lauren were great hosts, making sure we had everything we needed and meeting us for check in. Would definitely stay in this home again if we make it back to Hilo.
We loved our stay at the house, especially because of the location. The snorkeling off the black sand beach is great. And we loved seeing the sea turtles. This is my second time at the house (3.5 years after the first). Our overall impression of the house is that it’s charming, but needs updating.
This stunning Hawaiian home, situated right on the water, offered a wonderful experience. Every morning, sitting in the cozy living room with a cup of coffee while enjoying the serene waterfront views was simply perfect. The host was exceptional—highly responsive and attentive, ensuring every detail contributed to an amazing stay. Highly recommend!
This is a lovely, comfortable and well appointed home in a great location. The VRBO listing notes it is a 3 bedroom unit but one bedroom was closed while we were there. For us that was fine but if you are a larger group make sure to clarify that.
We loved it!! Feels like you’ve traveled through time and landed in old Hawaii 🏝️
Great location, great service, and we look forward to returning soon. Mahalo Nui Loa
We had a fantastic stay! Our host was amazing and the property is oozing with charm.!
Great experience. Very helpful and responsive host! We appreciated how nicely appointed the home was, all the recommendations for dining and activities and the location. Walking across the street to swim with turtles at the black sand beach was pretty amazing! We would gladly stay here again!
We loved being able to walk down the driveway to snorkel and whale watch.
The house is lovely and private and quiet at night - except for a few dogs that seemed to want to bark for a short period @ 3:00am
We were impressed with all the little extras found in the house: sewing kit, small office incidentals, soaps and shampoos and fix it items - very well appointed!
We had a very comfortable stay.
The house is wonderful and fully equipped with everything needed. We spent 2 days hiking at Volcano National Park; about 40 minutes away. We also visited some remote beaches but in the end really enjoyed ourselves on the small beaches within walking distance. Hopefully we will return one day.
The house is beautiful, clean, and very well equipped. It’l located across the street from one of Hilo’s most beautiful beach parks, with a view of the surf break and rocky shore. We saw turtles and whales from the property. The host was a prompt and excellent communicator. We’d stay here again in a heartbeat.
My kids and I stayed here for 3 nights as a home base for exploring the island of Hawaii. It really was an adorable and unique place. My kids enjoyed how authentic and comfortable it was. We didn’t spend a ton of time at the house but the location was right across the street from the park and beach. We were a couple miles drive from our favorite diner (Ken’s), and we were an hour drive from Volcanoes National Park. I would stay here again if we return.
We had a nice stay at the house which is a lovely older traditional Hawaiian home. It was fun poking around the gardens and visiting with the friendly geckos and outside cat. The swimming across the street was great too.
The house is a great place to stay and well-appointed. Bring your own BlueTooth speaker, though. The peninisula it's on is busy - lots of car noise and at night the coqui frogs. We never lost sleep due to either.
This property exceeded our expectations, it had such a Hawaiiana feel. Everything was wonderful and we wish we could have stayed longer. Every day I miss sitting outside with my morning coffee on the front lawn or across the street at the ocean, Swimming and snorkeling in the beautiful crystal clear ocean across the street, BBQing in the private tropical back yard. House was well equipped with all our needs and very comfortable. Great central location! We had the best time. Highly recommend this beautiful house!
Quintessential Hawaii living exprierince - Totally worth the money!
After staying in 5 star resorts all week, we wanted to have a low-key adventure in a less “touristy” area of Hawaii and this charming home delivered.
A well-appointed, historic home. Not perfect however, perfectly charming! What it lacked in terms of “luxury”, it made up for in location & authenticity. We were all very comfortable in this elegant home.
The magical gardens (front & back) were the perfect spot for afternoon cocktails (post swim) & bocce. We had a difficult time tearing ourselves away from the beach across the street to explore the area.
We have already booked our next visit!
This is a very traditional circa 1930s traditional Hawaiian house. It is surrounded by dense tropical foliage and moss covered rock work. At night a chorus of frogs sing you to sleep (or sometimes keep you awake because they are very loud). If you are looking for spacious rooms with high ceilings and genuine wood floors, this house might be for you. This free-standing home is located right across the road from a lovely ocean park that locals enjoy for snorkeling and swimming. We were comfortable, but if you are inclined towards modern, sleek lines and state of the art appliances, this is not your place. Like most older homes, especially ones located in a very rainy climate, it has some quirks like a front door lock that is difficult to operate and a kitchen that needs more work, including an updated dishwasher. But the place is big on charm. You'll leave knowing you had a memorable Hawaiian experience in an authentic traditional home totally unlike the typical hotel or condo.
Lets start with the house. This is an older house and was built in a different time when people lived with and in the world so the house has tall ceilings, well designed windows and personality for days. The house was immaculately clean and well maintained. It is next to the ocean so there was some rust on some of the fittings but that is unavoidable and nothing you could possibly fault.
The location is fantastic right across from a park and the beach with easy access. The owner's warning of finding the driveway spooked me a bit but I found it easy to find (thank you Apple Maps voice). The grounds themselves are fascinating as well.
Now, the warning. It says it in the posting but be aware. This place does not have air conditioning so you may have to open the windows to cool things down. Hawaii has coqui frogs which I had never heard of but are astoundingly loud until they get tired. The owner's instructions do warn of this and there are earplugs in case you didn't bring your own. We travel a lot so we had earplugs and our own soundmachine but I am a light sleeper and by midnight I had begun to fantasize about the complete eradication of all frogs on the earth. If you are a light and early sleeper, make sure you are there at a time you won't need to leave the windows open. I know it is first world whining but a portable or window AC unit in the bedrooms would make this problem (and some others) go away completely.
Ok, that was the bad. The other good. We were met with a personal orientation which wasn't really complicated enough to need one. There were written instructions there that had all the info we needed. During the stay we communicated with the Owner, who checked in to make sure all was ok, and she was incredibly responsive and supportive. Literally could not ask for more.
If I found myself in Hilo again in a cooler time (or when Hawaii figures out something to do about the coqui apocalypse), I would definitely rent here again.
