About Brenda Neall

My hubby Rick and I are enjoying our retirement in our little piece of paradise. Rick has a large vegetable garden which keeps him busy during the growing season. In the late summer and fall, he volunteers at the local Salmon Enhancement Facility. After I retired I turned my then hobby into a profession, going back to school to take Ceramics at Kwantlen University. I now have a pottery studio and showroom called Down to Earth Clayworks, located in the basement of our house, where I make functional works for sale here and sometimes at other venues in town.

Brenda Neall purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Brenda Neall chose Sunshine Coast

We bought this property so we could come 'home' .... I (Brenda) am a great granddaughter of 2 founding Powell River families, the McQuarries and the Patricks. I was born here in Powell River, left in my teens and returned with my hubby Rick in 2007. This location is close to Douglas Bay (Donkersley Beach), where my Great Gramma & Grampa Patrick homesteaded in the early 1900's, where I spent my summers as a child and where I have family living still today.

What makes this cottage unique

The lovely treed driveway leading to our cottage is steeped in the history of the area. Once a thriving logging community, including logging by rail, the driveway is part of the original roadway to the former Mahood Family estate. Old growth stumps from past logging activities can be found in our forest.

Nature abounds in this small community of mostly waterfront homes. It feels like 'cottage country' with country roads, tall trees and the occasional wildlife visitor .... bear, deer, eagles and other birds. Although we are not on the water, the waterfront is easily accessed, including a new viewpoint access, where from a bench seat, if you can brave the wind and rain, you can watch some of the spectacular southeasterly storms that come in with the rainy weather.

The cottage is within walking distance of Donkersley Beach, one of Powell River's premier beach areas in the summer months. Brew Bay/Lang Creek Estuary and it's beach areas are a quick 5 minute jaunt down the road. If you kayak or canoe, there is parking at the Brew Bay beach access and a small launching area for carried water craft.

The creek supports a Salmon Enhancement Facility and program. During late summer and fall months, salmon can be observed heading upstream. The eagles join the fishermen congregating on the waters edge. Some take to boats in both the Brew Bay and Douglas Bay (Donkersley Beach) waters, looking for the big catch.

If walking/hiking/biking is your passion, on the other side of the highway at the end of Nassichuk Road, are some of Powell River's many serviced trails.

Great Powell River Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The place is fully remodelled with everything you'll need including washer and dryer and a full kitchen. Rick and Brenda are great hosts and the place is in a very quiet location.

The location is close to town and close to the Saltry Bay Ferry.

The pictures don't do it justice, excellent value, try and contact them directly.

The only problem is Expedia has made dealing with the owners difficult.

I look forward to returning.

Great!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the cottage during our stay. Very clean, and tastefully decorated. We loved that the beach was just a few minutes away. We loved the wood stove that kept it feeling cozy. There was cable, Internet, and Netflix. Also some eggs from their chickens which is a nice detail. :)

Home away from home!!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and i stayed at Brenda and Rick's cottage for the month of November whilst i was working in Powell River. It was an absolute dream! The moment we walked in, it felt like home. This cottage has everything you need to feel at home and even more! Prior to coming to the cottage i had e-mailed Brenda to check whether she had an ironing board and iron~ when i got there there was a brand new iron and board which was so thoughtful! The fireplace is lovely and there is ample wood, the beautiful sounds of the eagles just outside your window are so peaceful. The kitchen is super functional, in fact we were able to have a few guests over from work and cook!!! The dozen eggs from their chicken's in the fridge is such a warm and thoughtful treat. The cleanliness was just remarkable! I really have nothing but AMAzING things to say about this place. It rained lots whilst we were there, however, the beach close by was still inviting and we managed to get out and go for walks, the nice thing was coming home to a cozy wood fire and a hot cup of tea! Thank you Brenda and Rick!

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed the cottage. Spotlessly clean and newly renovated, attentive hosts. The cottage is totally separate and private from the main house. The location is unique as you drive into a wooded driveway and feel like you are in a different world! Walk to the beach and beautiful view points. Only 15 minutes to the ferry and 15 minutes to Powell River which has all the amenities. Are some smaller stores very close as well. Strongly recommend.

Great Relaxing Cottage Near Beautiful Beaches and Many Outdoor Activities

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I recently spent a week at the Old Mahood Cottage near Powell River and loved everything about it! Brenda and Rick, are great hosts that ensure you have everything you need and provide great tips on the best local beaches and things to do around Powell River. The cottage itself is newly renovated, clean, and well equipped with a full kitchen and washer and dryer. It is an excellent spot if you are looking to relax or you wish to stay near Powell River to enjoy all the outdoor activities. There are two great beaches near by; a beautiful small beach is only steps away from the cottage and if you drive 5 minutes you can enjoy one of the nicest beaches in Powell River. We enjoyed a day at nearby Inlet Lake, went golfing, ate our way through the local blackberry festival, and were able to spend an amazing day in Desolation Sound on a guided Kayak trip. We will definitely be coming back and highly recommend this property!
