Laundry room convenient to in-kitchen eating area. Private formal living room/den are remote from family room for quiet time! Sunny huge windows throughout feature views of quaint historic neighborhood and cozy backyard. Pond next door is perfect for children's fishing trips. Two spectacular beaches are a short walk away and beach cart/chairs/cooler/umbrella are provided.

Rear of house is adjacent to Dunn's Lane, the narrowest street in Marblehead and on way to the central shopping district. Fabulous seafood restaurants as well as yacht clubs and boat rentals are nearby.

Many concerts, plays, and movies are available throughout the year, and especially during the Marblehead Festival of the Arts in July.

About John Johnson

We raised our twin children (boy and girl - now 26!) in this home and they spent many happy hours at the beaches and pond nearby. We added on a huge family room, kitchen eating area and back deck in anticipation of our growing family and we spent most of their time there enjoying views on three sides! I am a (near) retired energy conservation engineer working for a large company but I am now travelling a lot (business and pleasure) so renting my home out during the summer is perfect for us (although we hate missing the best part of living in Marblehead - the summer activities!).

I moved here in 1977 straight after graduating my engineering program at University of Illinois (Champaign/Urbana campus), since I fell in love with Marblehead at first sight! I have never tired of seeing and smelling the ocean next door and always feel that "Ahhhh!" moment when I drive past Grace Oliver Beach on the way to the driveway after a long hard day at work.

The neighborhood is filled with young children and everyone is very friendly. We are all professionals in the neighborhood and we live here because while the home is near the central Historic District, we all love the open areas and countryside features of the neighborhood. It is a very quiet neighborhood and everyone looks out for each other. That's why I always feel safe and welcome here in this little gem of a neighborhood. You will too!

What makes this house unique

This house always draws a "Wow!" when people first see it. It's a central-entrance Colonial built in 1875, but beautifully maintained and retaining all the original architectural features that made it special in 1875: exterior Greek Revival details, shutters (real ones) that still work, interior mouldings, and many built-ins that make living here both beautiful and convenient.

We added a huge family room that adjoins the conveniently arranged kitchen and allows everyone to join together in activities. An outdoor deck is right off the family room and has couches, chairs and tables for outdoor relaxing and eating.

The best feature, however, is the location - walkable to everything great about Marblehead and on the border of the Historic District. There are so many unique hidden walkways and stairs in Marblehead that you will undoubtedly spend many hours exploring the neighborhood and each time you will find something interesting you missed the last time!

Very spacious, new towels and bedding, wonderful location!

The 10 of us (6 adults and 4 kids) spent beautiful 5 days in this charming town!

The house, the owners and the location were all wonderful.

The owners were very hospitable, welcomed us with wine and chocolates! :) and provided all directions and sightseeing recommendations.

It was great to have new towels, linen, bedcovers, plenty of cookware and dishes. The house was clean and bright, with large kitchen, 2 dining areas and spacious living room. We also enjoyed our morning coffee & view on the beautiful deck.

I sincerely recommend this property for any type of vacation.

Owner's Response: Kornelia's family and two other families all were very interesting and perfect renters. They were my first short-term renters (I am new to VRBO), I lucked out with them as they were able to help connect my Verizon FiOS internet and cable TV system. (One of the group was an IT specialist!) They left behind some excellent home-distilled after-dinner liqueur for me! Thanks!

Great location and great space

Stayed here for a family wedding in Marblehead. Two families with older children stayed (total of 11) all comfortably. A couple of things to note: 1 shower, not a lot of outlets (but all found a place to charge devices). If this will not be a problem for you this space is perfect with great location in easy 5-8 min walk to water and town, quiet neighborhood and great character to the house.

This house is great for family gathering

We visited Marblehead in early June to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday. This house worked very well for us. Not everyone was able to make it so only 4 of us stayed there. The house is big and spacious with a lovely deck. There would have still been tons of room if all 10 of us were there. As it was the four of us enjoyed the space to spread out! There was a heat wave during our stay and we were very grateful for the air conditioners! It is so easy to walk anywhere in Marblehead from the house and the neighborhood was quiet and friendly. We would definitely rent this house again for our next excursion to Massachusettes

This is a cool old house, but it was dirty when we arrived and in need of care

My husband & I have stayed at many places in the country, many places we've never seen before and are trusting that what we are told is what we are getting so we have experiences to compare. I have also lived in a house built in 1925 that is not updated, so I don't think my expectations are out of line, especially when we are paying ALOT of money for this house. But let me start out by telling you the PROS about the house.

PROS - It's a really cool old house, piano for plunking, great location, Redd's Pond is fun for kids, w/in walking distance of old town Marbletown, Quiet neighborhood, Lots of room, Great for families w/ young children/large groups, plenty of parking, great water pressure, washer/dry. Owner is very responsive and kind.

CONS - I had a laundry list of cons after we left, but the owner has corrected some of the issues or made a promise to correct the situation for future renters. That said, you should be aware of this:

*Paint peeling from ceilings all over entire house, especially bedrooms and bath. The house looks tired.

*Outside of house needs repairs and paint - many of the houses in NE need outside paint in general but it would be nice if they at least started painting the entrance.

*The bed my husband & I slept in the first two nights was so old & broken we kept rolling towards each other during the night. Worst sleep ever, sore neck/back. I've mentioned to the owner that this bed should be replaced.

*The house was not clean when we arrived - owner refunded $500 as a good faith effort and says he has hired professionals on a go forward basis.

Owner's Response: During Jennifer M's stay, we responded immediately to all of her stated concerns and offered additional cleaning and other services, but she declined since they performed the minor clean-up tasks themselves. Her other complaints would have been addressed immediately as well, but since they were not expressed until this review was published I was never given a chance to address them. Previous renters have used the same beds described above without any complaints (I verified this with previous renters after this review was published). Nevertheless, I have purchased new memory foam mattress tops and pads for future guests. Any minor painting tasks have been accomplished inside and outside, and subsequent guests have complimented us about the cleanliness and condition of the house.

Charming historic house

We stayed over for three nights over the Spring Break and were very charmed by this historic old house. It is quite large both upstairs and down, and is particularly suited for family reunions. One full bath, several comfortable living rooms, and 4 bedrooms. The two staircases were great for ample cardio activity- lol! The kitchen has all modern appliances- dishwasher, gas stove, microwave, washer & dryer, etc.

The sheets and towels are soft and plentiful which is always nice (who wants to dry off with a postage-sized square), and the hot water is also powerful and readily available. There was no cleaning fee attached with the property so just be aware that part of the house rules is having to do laundry prior to departure.

The house is two houses up from Redd's Pond, and the Old Burial Ground which are so atmospheric, especially at sunset. The house next door has chickens, whose morning clucking, also lends to a cool, country, historic vibe as you drink your morning coffee.

The owner was very responsive, helpful, and kind!! You would do well to rent this house in any season because it really fits all requirements you might have. We enjoyed ourselves, created great memories, and you will too!

Marblehead is a world-famous yachting capital as well as a quaint historic New England village. The home is walkable to everything important in Marblehead and very close to beaches, a pond (fishing allowed) and restaurants/bars. Marblehead has a vibrant arts scene and many local art museums, galleries, and art cooperatives. Many shopping opportunities are a short walk or drive away. The summer arts programs (including classes) are well known, featuring a 4-day-long "Marblehead Festival of the Arts", over the July 4 weekend, with art shows, performances at Crocker Park (free), and street performers.
