Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Full Baths, Furnished Patio, Fully Fenced Yard

This lovingly restored 1951 Cape Cod is located on The Hill, a leafy residential neighborhood just one block from lively and charming downtown Saugatuck. Walk to shops, galleries, cafes, pubs, a day spa, a yoga studio, a playground, and the harbor boardwalks. Rent a bike and explore picturesque neighborhoods, country roads, and our world famous coastline. If you've never seen a Great Lake, you'll swear you've stumbled upon the sea, but--no salt, no sharks, no worries. Relax on the most beautiful beaches anywhere.

Perfect for eco-conscious travelers. The whole property is maintained without the use of any toxic chemicals, inside and out, and we make it easy to recycle and compost, if you'd like to.

Inside, relax in the living room, dining room, den/bedroom (with French doors), and eat-in kitchen, which all flow together, plus three bedrooms and two full baths. We collect art and books and have filled the rooms with both. This is our second home and we want you to be comfortable and have fun while traveling light. You'll arrive to find everything clean and made up for you, so all you have to do is unpack. Kick off your shoes and settle in!

Outside, lounge in the shade or sun of the large lush fenced yard while the kids climb around in the treehouse with slide. Fire up the charcoal grill on the furnished patio.

You'll find a basement laundry and detached garage (for storage, not parking). The yard is entirely enclosed--by a 3- to 4-foot picket fence on three sides and a six-foot privacy fence on the fourth.

Bike rentals are available nearby and the Interurban (a shuttle bus service) is on-call for short trips around town. You'll want a car for family trips to the beach with gear, but note that it's just a three-mile bike ride, and it's also walkable if you're up for an adventure that includes crossing the river on the chain ferry.

We supply bed, bath, and kitchen linens, basic soaps, and enough paper products to get you started. Don't forget your beach towels and sunscreen!

We're available by phone when you need us, and often in person on checkin and checkout days. Please note that this is our second home and we're looking for travelers who will enjoy it and treat it with care.

About Alison

We managed this home as a VRBO vacation rental from 2004-2007, with many return renters, so rest assured, we'll take good care of you. I'm a proud native of the Great Lakes State, eager to share our beautiful town and lakeshore with you. My family and I have had the good fortune to call Saugatuck our year-round home for most of the last 18 years. Now, we're happy to spend part of our time in this one-of-a-kind Great Lakes treasure: Saugatuck.

Alison purchased this house in 1997

Why Alison chose Southwest

We love Lake Michigan and its magical shoreline. Saugatuck is home to some of the most beautiful sand dunes in the world: forested, grassy, and, of course, sandy! The beaches have been voted the most beautiful in the world: no salt, sharks, no worries. Our town is friendly, fun, and loaded with charm and unique places to shop, dine, relax, and explore. You can be as relaxed or as energetic as you like.

What makes this house unique

From the refurbished 1950s kitchen to the bedroom built-ins to the vintage bathroom tile to the glossy pine and oak floors to the profusion of large windows, there is nothing cookie-cutter about this house, and you can watch the world go by from the lush yard. Lake Michigan is just a 5-minute drive away and downtown is so close by even toddlers can walk there. In fact, the playground is a block away, and the beloved Saugatuck Drugstore with an old-fashioned soda fountain is just a block farther.

Perfect, perfect house!

I can't rave enough about this house, and it was perfect for our girls weekend. From the unique art on the walls, to the hundreds of interesting books in every room, it just exuded warmth and comfort. Location was ideal too. We will definitely be back!

Had a great time at Ethel's House for a girls' weekend getaway. House is very cozy and comfortable with tons of books and games. We didn't cook much but kitchen is well stocked. Owner is very responsive and helpful. We will try to come back next year!

Ethel's House was charming, comfortable, and perfectly located for a vacation in the Saugatuck area.

  • 5 of 5

Ethel's House was perfect for our mini-vacation with our son and family, 4 adults and 2 children. The house was spacious, offered many family-kid friendly amenities, was perfectly located and provided a comfortable, relaxed environment for a two family mini-vacation. Also, loved the large yard and play area for young children! We definitely plan to stay there again!

Immaculate and roomy house with beautiful furnishings and a great back yard!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay over a 3 day weekend. We were a party of eight - 5 adults and 3 kids - and there was plenty of room for all of us at Ethel's House. The house is just beautiful - the owners have lovely furniture and interesting art work, and tons of books to browse. The location was ideal - literally a block from town and the Saugatuck waterfront. I would definitely recommend it!

Perfect place to unwind in Saugatuck

  • 5 of 5

This is a great house to get away for a bit. We recently stayed with 2 families and some little kids (5-7 years) and everyone had a fun time.. There is stuff to keep the kids busy (ping pong, balls, board games), beach toys to bring to the beach, and hammock. The location is perfect for walking into downtown (checkout Uncommon Coffee Roasters).
