About James and Karen Coleman

Husband and wife team who work hard and play hard. Life long Oregon residents.

James and Karen Coleman purchased this condo in 2015

Why James and Karen Coleman chose Kona Coast

Been going to the Big Island of Hawaii for over 20 years and staying at the Kona Makai Condominium Property. It's construction and location and garden like manicured grounds make it so inviting. Typically very quiet and relaxing non-smoking complex and property.

What makes this condo unique

Right on the ocean this property has a million dollar west facing view with beautiful sunsets. With a nice pool and hot tub, exercise facilities, and tennis courts and a small ocean cove which you can enter the warm pacific ocean all right there - you will soon see what we fell in love with. Close to downtown shops, markets and dinning.

Little piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't be happier with our stay. James and Karen were easy to work with and very accommodating. The condo was just outside of Kona, so it was away from the noise and traffic, but close enough to have easy access to all that Kona has to offer. It was amazing to watch the sunset from the patio and hot tub. The beds were comfortable, it was clean and well taken care of. Would stay here again! Mahalo!!!

Well appointed unit, has everything you need and more!

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful gardens, awesome BBQ area, great pool by the ocean with lots of chairs, friendly guests. Tastefully renovated unit is well located, bed and pullout are most comfortable, well stocked cupboards, even sauces in the fridge for use, limited oceanview from lanai because of foliage.

Great condo, great location, all the amenities

  • 5 of 5

Kona is not known for it's beaches. But that's okay, because I'm not so fond of swimming with the fishes. But I do love watching the waves. This condo has a great little swimming pool, a great little hot tub and a wonderful area where you can sit and hang out and watch the waves crashing on the rocks all day and all night long.

The condo is great - bedroom has a king sized bed and a great overhead fan. The living room has a sofa and a love seat and a chair, so no one has to touch anyone else while they lounge under the fan. The balcony/deck has a lounge chair and a table for four, and another fan. Basically if you leave the screen doors open, you never need to turn on the A/C.

Kitchen is well equipped (we left you some bottled water). The BBQs are communal and overlook the ocean, so you may argue over who gets to cook. The washer/dryer was really nice. Really nice. It meant we came to Hawaii for 10 days with carry on, which was a great cost savings ($100/each, at least).

We have a rental car and we have been bopping around the island. There's a great BBQ place 1 mile down the road in one direction, and a whack of stores and restos about 1.5 miles in the other direction. Lots of walkers and joggers. Parking "downtown" isn't cheap. Park up the hill a block or so in a mall parking lot and walk down to the action.

We liked it so much here we actually asked around about how much it costs to buy a condo. I can reassure you that you're getting a great deal.

Renovated condo in quiet complex

  • 4 of 5

This Kona Makai condo is beautifully renovated top to bottom and comes equipped with all amenities plus more. Ground floor unit makes it very accessible but limits view of the ocean due to plants in the lovely manicured gardens just off the lanai. Lovely communal BBQ and outdoor terrace at the waterfront ; with great snorkeling right off the property. Kona Makai complex is very quiet and kids not potty trained are not allowed in the pool....not the best place for a young family or party-seekers, but everyone we met was very friendly. A decent walk to the restaurant area - we walked every morning for coffee, but would recommend renting a car to access grocery shopping and area attractions. Also to be noted...the free communal WiFi is very poor. It worked half of the time for simple internet searching and email, but not from the bedroom, and not to FaceTime with family at home. There is lots of free internet around if you're willing to walk to Ali'i Marketplace or to Coconut Grove Marketplace. The condo owners are easy to deal with and were wonderful at communicating with us before and during our stay. Thanks!

Owner's Response: Thank you Teresa for the review. We are working with the Condo Association to do something about improving the free WIFI. As the use of digital media increases the bandwidth gets gobbled up and it gets increasing more difficult to maintain a connection. We will be putting in a dedicated WIFI router in the condo for guests if the Condo Association is unable to improve their property wide free WIFI. Thank you for the feedback. We look forward to your return trip next year. Mahalo.

There are many activities you can enjoy on the Kona Coast and on the big island of Hawaii - but you can also just sit back, relax, and stay in! The condominium and the Kona Makai complex are a wonderful place to do just that. There are a number of activities you might consider during your stay.

An excellent and often-updated guidebook to the whole Big Island is "Hawaii the Big Island Revealed: the Ultimate Guidebook". (There is a copy for your use in the condo - please keep it indoors and "clean and fresh" for other guests.) You can do a google search for this book and other information and activities that you may be interested in during your stay. If you use Facebook you can search for "Kona Makai Condo" and visit our page and see a variety of photos and activities.
