A memorable experience at an historic Machiya with comforts of modern living with traditional Japanese charm and tradition. Close to everything. The canal outside the door is priceless!
Our host was lovely. She gave us information on where to shop, eat, and sights to see. The house was beautiful, comfortable and close to the grocery store, an onsen, and transportation. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you!
Lovely house where traditional Japanese meets western, much better than staying in a hotel. Beautifully presented, clean and comfortable in a nice neighbourhood. We were met by Ume, whose Grandmother use to own the house, she was a fantastic host who went beyond our expectations including forwarding a parcel I accidentally left behind to our next accomodation. Would definitely stay again.

The Canal house is well appointed, neat, clean, contemporary renovated 100 year traditional home. Ume is a very thoughtful host. Highly recommended
This isn't your normal VRBO. Umi is above and beyond the best communicator I have ever worked with. The place is decked out, stuff in English, nice towels, bedding, spotless and darn cool. The location is stunning, I mean gorgeous quiet street with a stream and beautiful plants in the middle of a city. I have stayed at properties around the world and this is easily the best one.
UME, the host, is such a wonderful person. She greeted us up on arrival and gave us a tour of her beautiful home. The home is as described and more!
The stay was peaceful, & clean. We visited in temperatures between and around 30-40F. The home was well equipped in keeping us warm.
The neighborhood is a sight for sore eyes. It was magical to wake up and begin each of our days as if we were a part of the city. Transit stations are walkable, which made it nice to move "from and to" destinations.
Overall we had an amazing trip full of new memories that will last our lifetime. When I think of Japan I'll always remember the hospitality and home this listing has gave us!
Thanks again and forever in sharing your home to us!
It was such a pleasant surprise to come across this gem on VRBO. A wonderful, traditional house with all the amenities you would expect in a modern home.
Even before checking in, Ume was more than accommodating. She sent very specific and thorough messages prior to our check-in date. She even included many area restaurants, bars, grocery stores, etc that she recommends. On one rainy day, I even received recommendations of indoor things too do! She's more than willing to personally welcome you and also to see that you have been pleased with your stay at check-out time.
The house itself was very clean with plenty of instructions on how to operate appliances. The main bedroom downstairs has a lovely patio view that it shares with the shower. The bathroom and kitchen are top notch. There is a loft bedroom upstairs with a bonus room that can also be used as a bedroom. There is only the one bathroom downstairs.
It's on a quiet canal street, but is near several bus stops and train stations. There's a convenient 7-Eleven right around the corner.
