Quiet getaway on the bay
We had a great experience staying at Green Gables. The cottage was rustic but cozy and had everything we needed for the weekend. We fished and put the crab traps out every day and ate what we caught for dinner. Sheila's dinners are highly recommended as well. The only thing I wish we would have known would be to bring drinking water along, as the tap water smells a bit. We will definitely be back!
Relaxing and peaceful
Tom and Charlotte,
Why only four stars, well the first star is for the wonderful time we had. It was the most relaxing vacation ever, usually when you get back from a vacation you need a day or two to recover, not this time.Watching our nineteen year old daughter spend hours catching crabs on the dock. The second star was for the people we meet on the island, Brent was a huge help. The neighbors, Jay and Judy, we found live not to far from our neck of the woods, Judy even brought us fresh homemade fig jam from her tree, it was still warm. Shelia is an outstanding cook, we had the crab cakes, sweet potato fluff and fresh from the oven smith island cake. And the gentleman who lives on the houseboat gave us four dozen crabs and more fish then we could eat all summer. Star number three is for the island itself, just sitting on the dock and watching the wildlife was a treat. Walking our riding a bike around was extremely relaxing. If the weather is not to bad taking the kayaks out into the marshes will reveal much more of the natural surroundings. And the fourth star goes to Tom and Charlotte for opening up their home to us.
Star number five is not a negative but rather unfinished, the house is a work in progress with work to be done still. When you visit you will get a feel for the simpler times you here people talk about, back in the day. The people of Smith island are in no great rush on their way to somewhere, while the rest of us are in a hurry to go nowhere in particular. And this is how the house is, it will be finished when it's time and with great care. There is no home depot or hardware store nearby, anything needed must be brought over, but only when the time is right. So the final star is a work in progress and we hope to be back one day to see it finished.
Thank you again for a wonderful time,
Keith, Jeanne and kids
Peaceful Natural Beauty!
The house could use a little TLC (mostly painting) but was clean and very well furnished! Views from both sides of the house were absolutely gorgeous! There were many loose boards on the dock, but we still spent most of our time there, fishing & crabbing, and exploring the water with kayaks & canoe. Brent (caretaker) was so friendly and helpful, and Shelia (resident neighbor) baked us a most delicious Smith Island Cake! Especially enjoyed the sunsets, gentle breezes, and simple lifestyle that Green Gables and Rhodes Point provided!
My family and live at the beach in NJ and we're always looking for waterside experiences different from ours. This was our first VRBO experience and we're so happy we tried it. Had heard of Smith Island through word of mouth and also caught a couple profiles of this destination on TV over the years. Since we live in a location with a busy summer season we know how valuable it is to catch a place in the off season if you're looking for a quiet get away from it all. Charlotte and Tom were very accommodating with all of our questions ahead of our vacation. Very friendly on the phone, offered advice and answered questions we had not thought of. The cottage was cozy, clean and had everything we needed. The bikes, kayaks and canoe were perfect for the activity we sought. Caught several striped bass (too short to keep) right off the dock in front of the house and locals were happy to share fresh oysters and blueclaws with us. Everyone in the family, including my 11 year-old son and 8 year-old daughter, wants to return for another vacation in the future. Thanks for an awesome time.
Smith Island is located in the Chesapeake Bay about 12 miles west of Crisfield. It is accessible only by boat. It is a pleasnt 40 minute boat ride to the island.
