Liza is GREAT -- but this house is more rustic than we anticipated
Liza is a fantastic host! Very responsive! As others have mentioned, the kitchen is *very* well-stocked. The views from the deck & upstairs kids' room are fantastic!
That said, there were a few surprises that tainted our experience:
At the final point of paying for the reservation, you will be given the choice of either putting a high refundable deposit down, or to buy an insurance policy for the same amount of coverage. I'm a regular renter of homes when we travel and hadn't experienced such an unusually steep deposit. Though I am a clean & responsible renter, b/c we live 4.5 hours away I didn't feel comfortable being able to return to address any concerns. So it felt as if we were railroaded into the insurance policy.
When we checked in, we were unpleasantly surprised with the long list of housekeeping duties required upon check-out. In addition to the standard cleaning of the kitchen, renters are required to clean the shower & bathroom, vacuum all rooms on both floors, re-make the beds as they were found, mop the floors if needed & take all trash out with you. Bummer of a surprise to have to work on vacation. Unclear whether or not there is additional housekeeping between renters, but it seemed as if I vacuumed up far more hair & dirt than we could have shed in 2-1/2 days. Highly recommend shower shoes - the shower is in need of a deep clean.
We've rented homes in Tupper, Saranac & Lake Placid, and each had a nickname, so I didn't think much of the name "The Boathouse." This house is rustic - a reno'd former boat & equipment building. There is no insulation in this house ... in fact you can see between the floor-boards. None of this may be an issue in the Summer when you're swimming, hiking, etc. We rented the house in mid-October - it was really *not* possible to get warm, no matter how much wood we burned & we went through a LOT of wood. Thankfully Liza left us quite a bit to use. We used it all PLUS an additional 4 bundles in just 2-1/2 days. And we really weren't in the house much, as we were out sightseeing. We could imagine how kids wouldn't understand being so cold & being inconsolable.
Driveway down is in need of regrade -- scraped our car on rocks on every "in" & "out" no matter how slowly we drove.
We've paid comparable pricing for far less rustic accommodations, no required cleaning & a more modest refundable deposit. Based on other reviews, we're the dissenting opinion, but wanted to help prep future renters.
Thanks for your feedback which is always helpful. Actually, built in 1917, the property really is a boathouse typical of the style found on Long Lake! As mentioned by a previous guest, "the boathouse maintains a rustic Adirondack charm with modern conveniences of a restored camp".
Please note: The property damage insurance is set at the minimum rate offered by VRBO.
Better than advertised - exceptional value!
Every Autumn my wife and I spend a week or so in the Adirondacks. This year Long Lake once again came up in the lake rotation (i.e Saranacs, Blue, Raquette, Placid, etc.). We are so glad it did, we can not recommend Liza and Don's camp enough. Their boathouse maintains a rustic Adirondack charm with the modern conveniences of a restored camp. Privacy is assured as it sits at the very end of a wooded drive. Our biggest concern renting a lakefront boathouse was that it may smell like....a boat. Rest assured it does not - the home was clean and well kept/maintained. Liza sent an email on our night of arrival to ensure everything was as described and that we had settled in. Having rented at other locations in the past where we had issues, and were not able to contact the owner, this was a nice touch. Communication before, during and after was excellent. The owner's provided excellent activity suggestions for those not familiar with the area. For those inevitable, "rainy days in camp" your are close to two excellent, award winning museums: The Wild Center in Tupper and Adirondack Experience in Blue. Of course the camp itself is stocked with games, books, and a DVD player. Summing up I'd like to say we've spent much more on rental homes in the Adk's. but this spot is our new favorite. We'll definitely be back!
We're so happy you enjoyed your stay and would love to have you return anytime!
This is the Second time my best friend and I along our families have stayed in this house. Liza called us to be sure we were comfortable due to the expected cold weather. We love staying in this house and enjoy the boathouse feel. We will being booking again for next summer!
View, deck, comfortable beds, theme decorations, kitchen and dock 5 stars.
As a group of 8 adults we were comfortable. Kitchen had everything we needed. But the view from the deck is terrific. As we read in earlier reviews the walk down to cabin and back up to parking lot was hardest when unpacking and then repacking to go home. But the stone steps are from nature and would be a shame to replace with something man made. The owners did tell us there wasn't room to park the boat trailers after we unloaded our boats at the public launch, which by the way was was very nice and easy to use. Because you cannot let your trailers sit at the launch parking lot overnight, a member of our party made a phone call to the municipality of Long Lake and was told we could park them at a city owned lot. We did without trouble. The owners were quick to answer any concerns we had, and checked with us to see if we were comfortable. Appreciated all.
Lovely stay at Long Lake with the family!
This is a cozy lake front home. It is a peaceful and beautiful location. It is a special place and you can tell the owners love their home. There wasn't a need that wasn't met. They offer a canoe and kayak as well as a fire-pit for their beach area. There is also a dock for the kids to jump into the lake. There are also a good number of games on hand and a nice sound system to play music. That being said, it is a little work in that you have to bring your own linens and firewood. We had a couple of nights where it got very cold so we had a fire in the wood stove to heat the place. It was cozy but we went through a good amount of wood. Thankfully they have some on hand to help supplement what you bring. (this is not as big a deal if you don't have to worry about heating the house and are just having fires outside)
Overall, our family had a wonderful time and loved the boathouse!! What a find!
We're so glad you enjoyed your stay! Welcome back anytime!
Thanks to all our renters for bringing your own sheets and towels! As the boathouse sits on the edge of the lake this helps to limit water usage reducing the strain on the lakeside pump up septic system.
Wonderfully cozy home right on Long Lake--peaceful and beautiful!
We had a super awesome, wonderful time at your home!
