Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Gameroom, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7-9)

Come to this beautiful, romantic mountain retreat right on crystal clear Nanatahala Lake. You will find yourself high in the treetops, watching the pines swaying in the wind, the Sourwood leaves turning red, and the lake below sparkling with sun. In winter, the mountain tops across the lake will shimmer with frost.

This is a perfect romantic get-a-way. Wake in the morning to the sun coming over the mountains shining across the lake. In fall, reds and yellows against the dark green on the mountainsides or right outside the window engulf you with the wonder of fall. In summer, be engulfed by Appalachian lushness. And take a short drive to take a short or long hike on the beautiful Appalachian Trail (including a scenic fire tower look-out). Sometimes the Smokey Mountain mist creates shining wonders before your eyes. Cook your favorite gourmet meals in our kitchen in full view of the lake. Basking in the dappled sun on the deck is always wonderful.

At night, build a fire and sink into comfort with a glass of wine or your favorite tea while moonlight plays on the mountains across the lake. Try some candlelight while soaking in our large comfortable oval tub. Or relax in our cozy private spa on the lower deck and watch the stars.

Take a swim in the clear waters below. Use our canoe or two kayaks or launch your own boat nearby and tie up at our dock. Spend evenings on the dock, gazing at the stars in the clear mountain air. Feel the gratitude of just being alive.

Stroll down our scenic, peaceful neighborhood lane, take a loop hike through the woods on primative roads or take the nearby hikes on the Appalachian Trail to a great look-out or Wayha, Wesser or Siler Balds. Watch the birds, try your luck in the nearby award-winning trout stream or look for rare fresh water salmon across the lake or just fish right off the dock. Explore one of the many bike routes or visit the famous Nantahala Outdoor Center for rafting, kayaking, biking and delicious food.

Smokey Mountain National Park invites you just an hour away, or you can visit the famous Biltmore House in Asheville. Take a scenic ride on the historic railway or try panning for gems. Do you like music? Vist Dolly Partan's village or attend free Friday night concerts at John Campbell Folk School, or the great bands playing riverside at NOC. On the other hand, just sitting on the deck in the tree tops gazing at the lake might be just the peace and solitude you need.

Come treat yourself and let us welcome you to our home. We think there is no place more beautiful! We hope you will agree.

In winter the boats can still be used from the beach and sun shines brightly through the leafless trees and reflects up from the lake through the many windows. At night build a warm fire or just enjoy games with family. Outside, all is quiet.

About The Owner

We are two retired college community college teachers from Wisconsin. We love to travel the world, enjoy participating in active sports like hiking, kayaking, sailing, and skiing. But also love reading, eating good food and just sitting peacefully admiring nature.

The Owner purchased this house in 2007

Why The Owner chose Smoky Mountains

We fell in love with this lot with huge tall trees on a beautiful, pristine lake. We designed the house ourselves with lots of windows to be open to nature. We try to stay there whenever we can, but also like to share it with guests, even if we don't know them personally. So you are most welcome.

What makes this house unique

This house is a wilderness experience, high in the mountains, every room with a view of the gorgeous lake, and a unique chance to be in the branches of tall pines - but with all the luxury of home. We used to love camping in spots like this. Now we can enjoy comfortable beds, a modern kitchen and even a hot tub after a swim in the exceptionally clear lake. All in all . . this is heaven.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our home is new and we are just now starting our guest book. It is a great idea to share insights among guests and pass along tips about favorite things to do etc. We love staying at our Lake Nantahala house and hope it will provide a welcome retreat for you, too. (Marilyn and Jim)

Beautiful Lake home with stunning views. The beauty of nature here will blow you away!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this beautiful home Easter weekend. I will write a detailed review on this as it deserves 10 stars.

The booking process was very easy. The owners contact number is listed and they literally called me back within 10 minutes of me leaving a voicemail.

The owners are very nice people. I had an extremely hard time finding home owners that would approve my rental request with having 5 children which was

extremely frustrating but the owners of this property were very kid friendly. They are grandparents themselves they told me and were so nice about me having children. First thing I noticed when entering the home it was exceptionally clean. The layout of the home is the top floor has the master bed room with a deck and a beautiful living room with stunning views over the lake and a very nice kitchen. The master bath room is also on this floor and has a very big tub and shower. It has a fireplace and massage chair in the living room. The massage chair was awesome. On the bottom floor you will find a game room that your children will love. I know mine did.It has a pool table that can be changed to a ping pong table or air hockey table. This game room also has a huge TV with Direct TV.The home has a lot of board games for the family to play as well. The owners really went above and beyond to make sure a family with children will have a blast at their home. There are two more bedrooms on the bottom floor, one with a queen size bed and one with a bunk bed. Both bedrooms have a sliding door to go onto the second deck of the home which has a hot tub. The hot tub is very nice to relax in and we were grateful it was there. This floor also has a bathroom with a shower. From the game room you will find a door that takes you to a walking path down to the dock where you will find kayaks and a canoe. My kids loved canoeing on the lake with us. This location is absolutely beautiful. There are stunning homes built all around the lake but in good distance from each other giving you plenty of privacy and it is surprisingly quiet on the lake. If you are looking for fun but also a relaxing vacation for your family this home is definitely it. We will rent this home again. The beauty of nature here will definitely blow you away. You will not regret booking this property. If you view this home from your desktop take a virtual tour and you will see what I am describing. Enjoy your stay, we miss this beautiful place already!

We spent a week of our daughter's spring break in this house. We have been going to Lake Nantahala since we were both children (at least 25 years). This house is wonderful. It is neat, clean, up-to-date and has a wonderful open floor plan with many, many fantastic amenities. We took our own boat and could tie it up at the private dock. It was one of the best vacations we have had in a while and this house truly contributed to that. We are certain to stay again many, many more times in the future - we plan to every year now. Thanks Marilyn for sharing your awesome lake house with us.

Beautiful Place

  • 5 of 5

The house was much larger than expected and very clean. The lake was peaceful and quiet. Not a ton of other boats or people on it. Make sure you ask for the gate code before you check in, we had to call and find a neighbor to help us out. Plenty of linens and room for everyone to hang in one place or take their space somewhere else. We brought our own kayaks but it wasn't necessary. The canoe and paddle board were used and so nice to have. We will definitely be back!

Great place to stay!

An absolutely amazing place to stay. The owners were very concerned about any issues we encountered. At the end of the day it was a beautiful and great place to stay . The lake is absolutely amazing! The hidden waterfall is well within reach!

Great lake house with all the bells & whistles!

  • 5 of 5

Lake Nantahala is just picturesque and being able to stay directly on the lake was fabulous. There were 4 adults & 4 kids total and plenty of sleeping room for all of us. (Although there really wasn't a nice dark room my sister could put her 2 y/o down for naps as well as for his 8pm bedtime so they ended up using the downstairs bathroom for that which meant often times the remaining 7 had to share the upstairs bathroom. Joy joy!) The trees provided good privacy from the neighbors. Be warned that sound truly travels on the water....we could make out conversations from neighboring houses quite a distance away. ;-) The walk down to the lake & back up to the house wasn't bad. Loved having 2 kayaks and 1 canoe . The adults and kids got great use out of them. Plus, there were plenty of life jacket sizes - even one perfect for the 2 y/o! Spent a lot of time on the upper deck (grill was great to have!) and didn't have any issue with bugs at all. The downstairs doesn't have an AC and it got a tad bit warm for my liking but using the portable fan helped at night. Some of my family had a hard time sleeping late in the mornings since the sun comes right on in due to the lack of blinds/curtains. I'm an early riser so didn't bother me a bit. We rented a ski/tubing boat from Nantahala Lake Marine and that was definitely a great highlight of the trip. Ate at the other marina (Lakes End) a couple times and food/service were super both times. Super-friendly people! Plus, they had internet which was great since the internet at the house wasn't working during our stay. (A technician was coming to the house on our departure date so hopefully it got fixed. And Marilyn gave me a small refund for this issue which was kind since I didn't even ask for it). One of sisters has Verizon and she's the only one that could text and make calls. There were only certain areas of the home that she could get reception. There's a landline so we all used that plenty! There were plenty of sheets & blankets but the amount of towels was disappointing (8-10 I believe) so we were usually doing a load each day & we were very grateful for the W/D as well as the detergent that was supplied. There was a decent amount of paper products but needed our own stash of TP after about day 3. The kitchen is bigger than it looked in the pics and had pretty much everything we needed for cooking. No ice maker in the fridge although plenty of ice trays provided. Great stay!!
