Funky smelly yard sale chic rental
We rented this property for one week beginning August 15. We came from a two week rental in a clean, fresh well appointed house in Hyannisport that was an 8 min walk to the beach for the same weekly price. We wanted to explore other parts of the cape and so we rented this house.
The smell of moldy rugs and some kind of unpleasant wet dog smell in the main bedroom closet greeted us as we came in. The photos in the add made the place look airy and spacious which it is not. We liked the location, a short walk to west Dennis beach.
We were repulsed by the several old faded over stuffed furniture that we didn’t even want to sit down. We covered one sofa with a sheet. The old sad and worn rugs felt unclean. And though we tried to vacuum with the antique vacuum cleaner that spewed out more dirt than it took in and sounded like an airplane landing it did not help. The plastic tablecloth on the wood kitchen table was “laminated” to the wood since no one had ever removed it for cleaning. The moldy smell under the counter cabinets was yukky. The sponge in the kitchen sink was dirty and covered with what looked like small animal hairs. In addition, the neighbor in back of the house, a male, walked through the backyard with a dog and climbed over the rail fence as I was coming out of the outdoor shower wrapped in a towel... and as I stood there in shock... he exclaimed he was taking a "shortcut"
through the yard.
We felt unsafe after that intrusion.
We put up a no trespassing sign
And several days later a woman claimed that they had "permission"
To walk through the this yard to get to their house.
She asked if we were owners or renters which indicated to us that she did not even know who owns this property.
Yesterday the rotted makeshift wood handle on one of the screen doors
came off broken with a small nail protruding through the metal so we stopped using the screen door.
We left the broken pieces on the table.
We called the property manager an hour after we arrived. I explained that this place was not what we expected for the price and how displeased we were given Covid times at how the place smelled. He said he couldn’t help us. Never even called back to see how we were managing. I also tried to contact VRBO twice on the following day using the chat function... explained the situation in the text box and no one ever called back either. Grrrr.
Needless to say we will never rent this funky place again.
