The condo was perfect, the amenities kept us busy and entertained, and the short walk to the beach was perfect! We loved it!

One of the nicer units in A Place At The Beach

  • 4 of 5

I have been going to APATB for 30 years, staying mostly at our family's 3 time share units- but occasionally I rent a unit (expanding family). Mike's unit (237) is one of the nicer decorated condos in the complex. Everything was in working order and Mike provided a few "extra" amenities. Mike was very proactive on communications and returned our "deposit" promptly. Wish the weather had been better but would recommend the unit.

At the beach, but some (actually most) units are a little hike to the beach

  • 4 of 5

The idea was to hang out on the beach with my wife for her birthday at a relatively sophisticated beach front property. The idea of a nice apartment was attractive. I had driven past APATB many times having gone to the "Crystal Coast" often in the past--back when you would go dancing on the circle and the other end of the island was a dead end of a dirt road. Yes, we're that old. APATB is really for families but there were quite a few of my generation in evidence last week who seemed to be owners or regulars, so it isn't completely the domain of the kids, but it really is for the kids. There was a warning in our welcome packet that the pool would get crowded and it did--it was, after all, mid-summer. The units are modular and stocked on one another at angles that allow a view of the ocean, but not the beach as the dune is relatively high at that end of the island. The very small veranda could seat two intimately and that was a bit cramped. The units on the other side of the complex were larger with larger porches. Our apartment was well equipped, very clean and neat, and could sleep 4 although 6 was the maximum--the last pair would be on the couch. We were two and the snug digs were fine for us although the "linear-living" nature of the apartment reminded me of a small apartment in Paris, either that, or a nice mobile home. Getting to a spot on the beach required a 440 yard walk---not terrible but up and down the labyrinthine building with several staircases to negotiate. The fun stuff to do--putt-putt, tennis, a set-em-up-yourself bowling lane, basketball--were relatively handy though the indoor pool and spas required a lateral hike that we didn't make given the weather forced the slide and splash set there in droves. We were happy taking care of ourselves but, to be honest, the price was a bit high for this adventure

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. Researching old posts on line pertaining to dancing at the circle in the 70’s seemed to be a fun time. Hopefully this stay in Atlantic beach brought back a lot of good memories. We do enjoy one of the widest beaches in the area since a lot of the areas don’t have a beach during high tide.

APATB Unit 237

  • 4 of 5

We have stayed at APATB many times and probably will again. The condo was clean when we arrived and we had no major issues. I did notice the kitchen sink was a little slow to drain. It did not cause us any problems, though.

If and when we decide to come again, I would prefer a pool side condo that has two full bedrooms. It was just a little small for us with just the one bedroom and the twin beds.

Great location but small

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time during our stay at Atlantic Beach. The condo was clean and nicely decorated. It is in close walking distance to the beach. You can see the ocean at a distance from the balcony but it's not directly overlooking the beach. There is a queen bedroom with it's own bath, and an alcove off of the living room with a twin bed and twin trundle bed below. Everything in the condo worked well except the can opener. We tried to figure out how to use it, felt like idiots for awhile and realized it had to be broken. The neighbors were nice enough to share theirs. :) We loved the awesome outdoor pool and fun waterslide! You ride down the slide in big tubes and my kids had a blast! The condo is right down the street from Amos Mosquito's restaurant, which is really good and allergy friendly. Get there at 5 if you want a table for dinner. Fort Macon is really close and amazing and the aquarium and put-put at the park is also down the street and very fun.

I think the one complaint that I have about the condo (especially the kitchen and living room area) is that it's really small. Like really, really small. One plus to staying at a condo vs. hotel is that you get more space, especially kitchen space to prepare meals. This is especially necessary when you have a kid with severe food allergies and you can't eat just anywhere. The photo of the kitchen is exactly what's there and no more - no extra counter space and importantly, absolutely no shelf/pantry space for food. The kitchen is literally in a hallway connecting the master bedroom and the living room. We had to store the non-perishable food in the master bedroom closet. I would advise that if you plan on cooking meals, this may not be the place for you unless everything you need can be stored in the fridge and you don't need counter space to prepare anything. We were able to make do since we usually cook fresh food but we did have chips, fruit, cereal, bread, etc that could not be stored in the kitchen.

We ended up having a wonderful time regardless and made the best of it, and my husband and I reminisced about the tiny apartment kitchen we had right after we got married. :)

Owner's Response: I am sorry you weren’t happy with the size of the kitchen. I do have pictures of the kitchen in the listing so I wasn’t trying to deceive anyone. I did purchase a new can opener. I removed some items the wife had in the tall cabinet next to the fridge. Now there are 3 open shelves in that cabinet. There are some open shelves in the upper cabinets. We use the basket on top of the fridge for bread, chips etc. The condos are set up to sleep 6, I limit my rentals to a maximum of 4 because of the size. I agree the kitchen is small but with the gas and charcoal grills available through out the complex it is doable. The reduced counter space does take some getting used to especially when you are used to a regular size kitchen. My wife and I use the condo when it is available, normally eat breakfast and lunch in the condo and normally eat out for supper in the many restaurants in Atlantic Beach, Morehead City, Emerald Isle and Beaufort. Thanks for your review, Mike
