About Sue Courtenay

Our family of professionals moved to Belize over 30 years ago. Since then, we have contributed to the growth and development of our beloved adopted country. We built this house in 2007 as a holiday retreat and enjoy spending time there relaxing with our friends and family.

Sue Courtenay purchased this bungalow in 2005

Why Sue Courtenay chose Belize

My mother bought this property in 2005 after considering many locations in which to build a family get-away, safe from the hurricanes which plague Belize City during June to November.

What makes this bungalow unique

This property is unique in that it is very close to downtown San Ignacio and to all the commercial and recreational activities available there. Yet, when you are in the house, and enjoying the verandas, you feel like you are miles away from town and in the midst of a jungle. The house is locate on a secluded hilltop and has a great view of the forest canopy and all the flora and fauna contained therein.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This house was a home away from home. It had every amenity needed for myself and 4 kids, more space than we could ever use, and the best caretakers we have ever met. We were welcomed warmly, offered any assistance with the local area, provided 5 gallons of drinking water, use of washer and line, and given a dozen fresh eggs every morning from the laying hens. The house itself is secluded from the town so offers privacy, but it is only a quick 5 minutes down a typical San Ignacio hillside to town proper. There was amazing food and ice cream to enjoy, local market to experience and pick up groceries, and clear river water to play in. A bonus was a back of mostly americanized comfort food for our purchase if needed already stocked in the fridge. The hammocks secured on the covered deck out back were very much utilized after a day in the sun. I cannot say enough good things about this location, the caretakers, or the house itself. I will definitely be bringing my family back.

We have the Cahal Pech Mayan Ruins less than a 10 minute drive from the house.

Travel back in time and experience what life was like in the city of Xunantunich, one of Belize’s most popular Mayan sites. You drive up to the entrance and take an old-fashioned, hand-cranked ferryboat to magnificent ruins deep in the Belizean rainforest. Admire astronomical carvings at El Castillo (The Castle) and sweeping views of the Belize River Valley and even Guatemala—once you’ve climbed the steep pyramid steps to the top!

Every year at Easter time, we have the La Ruta Maya River Challenge which is a 135 mile canoe race on the Belize River from San Ignacio to Belize City which starts less than 10 minutes away at the foot of the historic Hawksworth Bridge.

Actun Tunichil Muknal also known locally ATM Caves Belize, is a cave in Belize, near the capital city of Belmopan in the Cayo District, notable as a Maya archaeological site that includes skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware. Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) is the most popular tour in the San Ignacio area. The tour starts with a short 45 minute drive from the house to the village of Teakettle, guest then hike through the jungle and rivers. Whilst hiking your guide will be explaining the history of the Maya and their relation to Xibalba “The Underworld” feel free to ask the knowledgeable guides any questions. At the end of the hike, you will arrive at the entrance to the experience of a life time – The mouth of Actun Tunichil Muknal. The caves is a wet/dry cave. You must swim into the entrance. There are several areas of skeletal remains in the main chamber. The best-known is “The Crystal Maiden”, the skeleton of a teenage girl, whose bones have been calcified to a sparkling, crystallized appearance. At the end of the tour head back to the parking area where you enjoy lunch before your journey back to San Ignacio where your tour started.

Every year the village of Benque Viejo Del Carmen also hosts the Semana Santa during the Lenten Season, which includes elaborate and artistic sawdust carpets, the passion of the Christ enactment and procession.

You can experience one of Belize’s most important rivers — the Belize River — on a canoeing trip from San Ignacio. With an experienced guide, float with the current, starting near the origin point where the Mopan River and Macal River meet right outside San Ignacio. You’ll experience Belize’s lush tropical environment and see local wildlife like monkeys, iguanas, toucans and parrots. It’s a fun and family-friendly way to get out and explore a piece of Belize! The launch point for your Belize River canoeing trip is just outside of town, so after pickup in the morning from the house, your adventure will begin almost right away!

After spending adventurous days, you can feed your ravenous appetite in one of many lovely nearby restaurants.
