Why Jeff Means chose Canyon
Palo Duro Canyon State Park with its Technicolor walls make for high-desert scenery more commonly seen in southern Utah. It offers more than 30-miles of hiking, mountain-biking and equestrian trails and an additional 1,500 acres set aside for horseback riding. You can bring your own horses so don’t hesitate to ask us about local boarding. Mountain bikers can experience the best single track in Texas and will enjoy the well maintained five trail heads networking for some 26-miles throughout the canyon ranging from "mild" to "wild" in technical ability - dirt, rocks, river rock, sand, wash-outs, switchbacks, drop-offs and climbs with alternative trail accesses throughout. During the summer, enjoy a performance of the outdoor musical drama TEXAS. The play, nearing a half-century in its on-going production runs Tuesdays through Sundays, June through August, at the 1,700 seat Pioneer Amphitheater. Watch the stories, struggles and triumphs of early settlers. The family-friendly show has singing, dancing, fireworks and lots of Texas humor. You'll find Comanche Cabin a place of amazing beauty, quietness and nurturing of soul & spirit. Here is where the Buffalo roamed. It’s Southern & Quahada Comanche (the most powerful & ruthless Indian tribes in American history), Kiowa, and Cheyenne and Arapaho territory. During their time, around 150-years ago, millions of Buffalo made this land their home and Palo Duro Canyon was a retreat for these nomad Indians - hunters of Buffalo. Chief Quanah Parker, the last of the Quahada Comanche warriors, fought the battle of Palo Duro Canyon not more than 20-miles east from Doves Rest in September 1874. It brought an official end to the U.S./Indian wars and the eventual peace that finally allowed settlers to occupy this last remaining freedom-outpost of “uncivilized” land in North America. Now, fun memories and RELAXATION happen here!

The Cabin was beautiful and comfortable-inside and out. Well-equipped with everything we needed.
Had a wonderful, relaxing weekend, with a beautiful, peaceful view of Palo Duro Canyon. Would recommed this highly to anyone. We will be back!
My extended family of 9 stayed in the Fortress and Comanche cabins for a four day stay in Palo Duro Canyon. The cabins provided everything we needed and more ... very nicely appointed and decorated, very clean, and fully stocked ... and the views! (Bonus: in the early mornings, we saw a lot of different wildlife right outside the cabins). Jeff's attention to detail and welcome gifts were much appreciated.
Palo Duro itself is a not-to-be-missed Texas gem. We will not stay any place other than Dove's Rest Cabins when we return.
Thank you Jeff!!
Beautiful location, beatiful house
Doves Rest Comanche was beautiful and well appointed, located just minutes from Palo Duro canyon state park. Comfortable beds, plenty towels and kitchen equipment, gas BBQ available and a wonderful hot tub. Chocolates and sparkling wine/cider with complimentary flutes awaiting us upon arrival was a wonderful extra.
We enjoyed our stay very much, the only downside was that the cabin is advertised as sleeping 6 with two kings and two rollaway twins available. When we arrived only 1 twin roll away bed was in the cabin and no spare bedding. A phone solved that within minutes with bedding and a cot being brought over. We would recommend the cabin for two couples or a family with up to 4 children, however not for 6 adults.
Epic Spring Break!
Our family enjoyed five days over spring break at the Comanche cabin, and it was fantastic. The weather was perfect, giving us the best of mother nature on Canyon hikes every day and a luxurious home with first-class amenities every night. The proximity to the park entrance made this a win-win, and the views from the house are absolutely amazing. We brought our own groceries and had everything we needed in the gourmet kitchen. Plus, the complimentary bottle of champagne was a nice touch!
Two king beds spoiled us after miles of great trail hiking. And we even enjoyed a couple of DVD movies out of a great collection that's provided. We would definitely recommend this place. It was a first-class experience start to finish.
Our stay at the Comanche cabin was unforgettable! Every detail towards outstanding hospitality was met. Wished we had planned for a longer stay.
