About Lina Wheeler
We live in Hampshire, Southern England and first visited Ireland on a Classic Car Tour in the early nineties. Quiet roads, stunning scenery, friendly people with a great sense of humour, excellent food, beautiful beaches, wild untamed coasts, fabulous crafts to buy. Somewhere we wanted to go back to as much as possible. So we did, quite a few times, and in 2009 the inevitable happened. We fell for, bought and proceeded with the 6 months of work updating our little 200 year-old 2 bedroom cottage, Beachside Cottage, yards from the beach in S. Ireland. We try to visit the cottage for as long as we can whenever we have the opportunity and to lovingly maintain and improve it. Our family are smitten too, the grandchildren particularly are drawn like magnets to the beach. The love affair still flourishes!
Why Lina Wheeler chose Ballycotton
Simon and I had been visiting different areas of Ireland for over 10 years and had fallen in love with its scenery and its people. We both adore the sea and the cottage's location on the Irish Riviera is incredible with the almost private little beach virtually an extension to the garden and superb constantly distracting sea views all around. Cork, voted one of Lonely Planet's top 10 Cities of the World 2010 with its airport and its ferry route to Swansea is 40 minutes drive, Rosslare ferry to Pembroke 3 hours drive. The coast is warmed by The Gulf Stream, the neighbours are welcoming and friendly and the cottage is surprisingly sound and cosy despite its 200 years. The surrounding area is totally unspoilt and the beach tempting - just to sit looking out to sea dissolves all your worries!
What makes this Cottage unique
The beach is safe for swimming, surfing, fishing and boat launching. There's also a stunning cliff walk to the village and its bars, restaurant and delicatessen. The famous Ballymaloe Cookery School is close by offering classes from 2 hours upwards. A perfect weekend would start with a Guinness in Cush in Ballycotton, followed by a meal there in the fabulous restaurant or some live music in The Blackbird or the newly opened Sea Church. Next day a visit to Cork to explore the city and go to the covered English Market to stock up on local delicacies or to the arboretum and gardens at Fota. On Sunday off to the deli and ice cream station, The Trawl Door, for home-made scones, cakes and jam and the Sunday newspapers, a walk on the beach beside the cottage or a swim and a beach barbecue. Then drift off to sleep to the lapping of the waves on the beach.
