Caspar Cottage, Charming Private Mendocino Vacation Rental

Bedrooms 1
Space 700 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Caspar Cottage is a charming, quiet, nicely and newly furnished cottage that we built on our five private acres, with a walk through a redwood forest to the waterfall in Russian Gulch State Park. We are located just 3 miles up the ridge from the ocean and 10 minutes from Mendocino or Fort Bragg. It's a perfect place for a honeymoon, anniversary, special occasion or quiet retreat. It has a comfortable queen bed with down comforter and nice linens, sleeper sofa, fully equipped custom kitchen, gas BBQ and picnic table with string lights above for enjoying the outdoors in the evenings, lovely custom cabinetry and a beautiful marble tiled bathroom with a jetted tub and large shower.

The cottage is private, spotless, very comfortable and nicely appointed. Flames from an enameled European propane stove bring the warmth and coziness of a fire with the convenience of a thermostat. There is a CD player, DIRECTV w/ HBO, DVD/VCR with small library of films, Satellite INTERNET connection, iron and hairdryer. We provide coffee and tea, toast and jam and fresh fruit and flowers. From the cottage you can walk through the Redwoods to a beautiful WATERFALL, as we are near the Russian Gulch State Park Waterfall Trail and bicycle trails in Jackson State Forest.

We will gladly direct you to great restaurants, nice beaches, beautiful hikes and activities on the coast. For more PHOTOS and GUESTS' COMMENTS please visit our CASPARCOTTAGE WEBSITE. About Diane Buxton and Robert Winegar

We built this sweet cottage on our five private acres near the end of the road at the eastern end of the Russian Gulch State Park. We also built our home and a small woodworking shop, and raised our children here. We have lived on the Mendocino coast for 35 years and love the Mendocino community.

Diane Buxton and Robert Winegar purchased this cottage in 1985

Why Diane Buxton and Robert Winegar chose North Coast

Mendocino is a beautiful coastal village perched on a headlands overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It has a very active artists' community with many art galleries as well as fine restaurants and shops. There are five State Parks along our coast, perfect for hiking and biking and kayaking and birdwatching and beach combing. There are many activities and festivals throughout the year. Whale watching weekends in March, a Film Festival in early June, the Mendocino Music Festival in July, Mendocino Art Center Fairs in July and November, Winesong! in September and Wine and Mushrooms and Crab Festivals in November and January.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy sharing our little oasis with guests who appreciate nature, peace and quiet and a comfortable, nicely appointed cottage to relax in and enjoy beautiful Mendocino coast. It's all about hospitality! Please visit our CasparCottage website and the Guests' Comments page.

Enchanted Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Once again, a 5-star review for this incredible cottage. I can't add too much more flowery language to the other 5-star reviews. All I can say is -- I can't wait to go back to this lovely place. Diane and Bob are wonderful people, and they've created a beautiful, peaceful retreat. It's glorious perfection!

Owner's Response: It always puts such a big smile on my face to know how happy our guests are at Caspar Cottage. It's honestly why we do it! Every time I'm finished getting the cottage ready for our next guests I say to myself, "whoever arrives here today are lucky people" because I know they will be very happy when they open our new Virgin Redwood door and go inside. We are glad to share the peace and quiet of this little slice of paradise with people who appreciate it. We look forward to seeing you here again (and we'll have a nice dinner together!) Thanks for the nice review, Diane and Bob

Artful Inland Property

  • 5 of 5

What you 'll find here: a very cozy, tasteful home with custom woodworking and delightful ceramic art made by the hosts; fresh cut flowers; a nice deep tub and large bathroom; comfy bed with TV/DVD player; quiet picnic area and lovely garden; lots of information on local activities; hiking into Russian Gulch park from the property; and very gracious, accommodating hosts. What you won't find: pages and pages of rules (don't do this, don't so that); cell reception (there is a land line phone though); and views of the ocean (it's three miles inland). A very tasteful place that offers a very good value. I can see why pets aren't allowed with the nice woodwork and furnishings, though I did miss my doggies, it was good to take a break from caring for them. The location is adjacent to the property owners house, which normally I don't really like but in this case, was a plus, because Bob and Diane are good people and nice to have nearby. The location does require driving out a few miles to local attractions or to get to the ocean. It made for a very nice getaway for R & R and a base to explore the coast.

Owner's Response: We're glad you enjoyed your stay. We enjoy providing an artful, comfortable, quiet cottage for guests to relax and rejuvenate in. It makes us happy too. Guests with Verizon cell phones get reception up here and most guests are able to use our WiFi to use their iPhones, but we do keep a landline in the cottage as well. We hope to see you back here again!

Caspar Cottage Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent our anniversary get away at Caspar Cottage. We had such a wonderful time in paradise, the cottage is so beautiful, clean and well equipped with amenities. The Redwood forest is a half a mile down the road and another mile or so hike to the waterfall, again Paradise. The forest was so beautiful it felt like I was in a tropical paradise. Bob and Diane are wonderful hosts, they also grow the best tasting apples! We thank you for a wonderful stay and we hope to be back.

Beautiful, Rejuvenating Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We loved Caspar Cottage! It was the perfect getaway from our hectic, urban lives. Dianne and Bob obviously love their cottage and want the guests to love it too. And they succeed. All the personal, detailed touches, such as cottage design and thoughtful decorations, fresh cut flowers, fresh fruit, good bread, coffee, etc., make the cottage inviting, as soon as you walk in the door. It is everything that the ads and reviews say it is. And Dianne and Bob were a delight to talk with. Though we were busy exploring what Caspar, Mendocino and Ft. Bragg had to offer; kayaking in ocean caves, walking to the water fall through the forest, perusing art galleries, the glass museum, the tattoo museum, and eating great food at the local restaurants, we appreciated having the lovely, private, and rejuvenating cabin to return to. We highly recommend it.

Excellent details and aestheticism.

  • 5 of 5

Caspar Cottage was my favorite vacation rental throughout our three week trip in Northwest California and Utah. The craftsmanship, features of the home, attention to details, natural light and huge bathroom tub were incredible. We also loved the succulents in pots that Diane has created with her own hands. The gardens were in full bloom and added rich color. There is a wonderful hike just down the road from their property. Mendocino is only a few miles and has a great vibe. Diane and Bob are a huge help and support. I will never forget my time at Caspar Cottage and would like to return one day.

Conveniently Remote!

  • 5 of 5

Exactly as advertised....maybe better! First of all, Diane was an awesome hostess. As others have shared, she does a great job making you feel at home with a nicely appointed cottage and fresh flowers. The supplied coffee, bread, jam and fruit make for a nice, light breakfast before heading out to explore the beaches, rivers, hiking trails or wineries. Her husband Bob did a magnificent job building the cottage which is warm, cozy, contemporary and full of light due to some oversized windows in every room. Tiny house living at its finest!

The cottage sits on 5 acres of property shared with the homeowners. Normally, being on the same property as the owners is not something that we would opt to do. But, Diane and Bob definitely give you your space. Besides a nice welcome when we arrived and tour of their garden right before we left, we really didn't see them. Yet, we had the security of knowing they were right there if we needed them for help with the appliances, fireplace, internet, etc.

If you haven't been to Mendencino before, you will love this little coastal town. The cottage is only about .25 mile from access to a "locals only" trailhead that syncs up with the Russian Gulch State Park waterfall trail. At about 2 1/2 miles round-trip, it is definitely worth the walk/hike. The cottage also sits a couple of miles north of Mendencino and south of Fort Bragg.

Caspar Cottage was the perfect getaway for a romantic weekend with nice blend of adventure and relaxation. If we were to come back to this area, we wouldn't want to stay anywhere else.

Thank you Diane and Bob for creating such a beautiful space and sharing it with others!
