About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Caspar Cottage is a charming, quiet, nicely and newly furnished cottage that we built on our five private acres, with a walk through a redwood forest to the waterfall in Russian Gulch State Park. We are located just 3 miles up the ridge from the ocean and 10 minutes from Mendocino or Fort Bragg. It's a perfect place for a honeymoon, anniversary, special occasion or quiet retreat. It has a comfortable queen bed with down comforter and nice linens, sleeper sofa, fully equipped custom kitchen, gas BBQ and picnic table with string lights above for enjoying the outdoors in the evenings, lovely custom cabinetry and a beautiful marble tiled bathroom with a jetted tub and large shower.

The cottage is private, spotless, very comfortable and nicely appointed. Flames from an enameled European propane stove bring the warmth and coziness of a fire with the convenience of a thermostat. There is a CD player, DIRECTV w/ HBO, DVD/VCR with small library of films, Satellite INTERNET connection, iron and hairdryer. We provide coffee and tea, toast and jam and fresh fruit and flowers. From the cottage you can walk through the Redwoods to a beautiful WATERFALL, as we are near the Russian Gulch State Park Waterfall Trail and bicycle trails in Jackson State Forest.

We will gladly direct you to great restaurants, nice beaches, beautiful hikes and activities on the coast. PRICES INCLUDE ALL TAXES AND CLEANING AND BREAKFAST GOODIES!

About Diane Buxton and Robert Winegar

We built this sweet cottage on our five private acres near the end of the road at the eastern end of the Russian Gulch State Park. We also built our home and a small woodworking shop, and raised our children here. We have lived on the Mendocino coast for 35 years and love the Mendocino community.

Diane Buxton and Robert Winegar purchased this cottage in 1985

Why Diane Buxton and Robert Winegar chose Mendocino

Mendocino is a beautiful coastal village perched on a headlands overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It has a very active artists' community with many art galleries as well as fine restaurants and shops. There are five State Parks along our coast, perfect for hiking and biking and kayaking and birdwatching and beach combing. There are many activities and festivals throughout the year. Whale watching weekends in March, a Film Festival in early June, the Mendocino Music Festival in July, Mendocino Art Center Fairs in July and November, Winesong! in September and Wine and Mushrooms and Crab Festivals in November and January.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy sharing our little oasis with guests who appreciate nature, peace and quiet and a comfortable, nicely appointed cottage to relax in and enjoy beautiful Mendocino coast. It's all about hospitality! Please visit our CasparCottage website and the Guests' Comments page.

Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

What a terrific cottage and what perfect hosts! Caspar Cottage is charming, cozy, well stocked for cooking (or not!), impeccably clean, and immensely comfortable. We were met with lights and heat on for our late chilly afternoon arrival--along with fresh bread, butter and jam, local Thanksgiving coffee, fresh seasonal fruit, and a delightful ambiance. The sense of privacy and peace was glorious. Diane and Bob not only offer a perfect get-away, but tons of ideas and pointers for enjoying the area. Can't wait to return!

Friendly, meticulous, pleasant, private, perfect

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Caspar Cottage was wonderful: A retreat in a meticulously kept cottage. The hosts were gracious and the property had just the right amount of privacy and charm. There were no disappointments, and Diane and Bob were great hosts. The hike down to the waterfall was perfectly documented along a lovely trail, and the location was just the right distance to Mendocino so that when we wanted to eat out, we could.

Don't hesitate to bring along some things for making a lunch or dinner if you want to stay in, as the kitchenette was well-crafted with plenty of utensils and pots and pans. We will come back again as time permits, or when we want to get some personal writing done with no distractions. Internet coverage was fine, but don't expect video downloads because of speed limitations for downloads. Not a disappointment on that front. Great spot. Lovely retreat. Comfy bed. Too many nice things to describe. You'll have a good time.

A delightful and cozy cottage

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from celebrating my birthday at the Casper Cottage! What a delightful, cozy, private, comfortable and spotlessly clean cottage it is! The bed is very comfortable, the kitchen has everything you might need. Diane and Bob are lovely and very friendly hosts. We received a warm welcome when arrived plus a warm cottage (nice on a cold day). Once inside we found bread, butter, jam, coffee and fresh fruit! The couch is located near two big windows so you can read by natural light and look at the forest too. You know the book you have never have time to read? Well this is the spot for it!

When you feel like exploring and hiking without getting in the car there are several great trails close by including the trail to the waterfall at Russian Gulch.

If you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing, comfortable place to rest, relax and recharge this is the place! Highly recommend Casper Cottage. Can't wait to return.

A second home

  • 5 of 5

This is our home of choice when we visit Mendocino, especially for longer stays where a full kitchen is a must. Bob & Diane are warm hosts who built everything on the property themselves, so it's lovely to appreciate all the care that went in to this guest cottage. It is artistic yet minimalist, and just the aesthetic we are looking for when we want rest among the redwoods and the waves. My husband and I usually bring our young son, who camps out on the sofa bed, while we enjoy the comfy foam mattress on the bed around the corner. We all love the soaking tub, the propane fireplace, and the beautiful light streaming in the giant sitting room window. The surrounding gardens on the property are also gorgeous. This is a spot that feels like home.

The perfect place to stay near Mendocino

  • 5 of 5

After traveling from the Midwest for vacations in Mendocino for many years, we found Caspar Cottage about 7 years ago and have been staying there ever since. We love its quiet setting in the woods in an area where there is a spot to go for a walk or run every morning without getting in the car, which is not the case in many places in the area. A State park with waterfall is a short walk from the cottage as well. Since there is so much to experience in the area, we love being in the middle of all the things that make the area so wonderful to visit - long walks on 10 Mile Beach (20 minutes north by car); walks in the magnificent Mendocino Botanical Garden (10 min. north by car); walks on the headlands near a light house, 5 minutes away, canoeing on Little River (20 min south), hikes in state parks in both directions and the towns of Mendocino, 10 minutes south and Ft. Bragg, 10 minutes north, each of which have fabulous restaurants, art galleries, shops and grocery stores. The cottage is spotless and well equipped. It provides an immediate sense of peace and relaxation because of its beauty of craftsmanship and wood (built by the owner) and the gorgeous landscaping and flowers with accompanying ceramics created by the other owner. These host artists have created beautiful places to sit and meditate or read.

They also go above and beyond to provide information and hospitality but do not invade your private space. We always hate to leave and can not wait to return the following year.
