About this property

Winter/Summer Sports in Chalet Apartment Chalet in Saalbach Hinterglemm and close to Zell am See

Saalbach-Hinterglemm is one of the best winter sports resorts in the Austrian Alps and with the link into Fieberbrunn in the Tyrol it has become the largest ski area in Austria. Offering over 200 kms of pistes to suit everyone from beginners to downhill racers. The village is easily accessible from Salzburg and Munich airports. And just 10 minutes riverside walk from Saalbach's centre, and its main ski stations, lies Haus Koenig, a traditional Alpine chalet with a balcony overlooking the river. This, architect designed, apartment is on the top (second) floor of the chalet and exudes Alpine ambience. It has ski/board/bike storage in the basement and the owners will direct guests to where skis/boards can be stored close to the lifts allowing the morning walk (and the resort's famous apres-ski activities!) to be enjoyed in comfortable footwear. Alternatively, to hire skis/boards/mountain bikes, etc.If apres-ski relaxation is preferred at home, there is an ice-bar on the balcony overlooking the river. A fully equipped Alpine kitchen facilitates fine dining at the traditional corner dining area. The owners, both ski guides, understand their guests needs! It is also a great summer location with numerous activities for all the family. Cycling, river rafting, hiking, walking, activity high wire location, tennis, golf, swimming in the mountain lakes. All activities for the whole family.

Perfect location
Perfect location between the 2 main entry points on the slopes. Close to the bus stop too if need be. Bathroom was large and decent hit running water. Room sizes were good and has everything you need. Only downside, which isn't really one as it's more about what we have got use to expecting, it's a family home so lots more items around compared to other vrbo / home rentals I have stayed in. Would definitely stay again

Nice apartment, good location for a peaceful vacation
The apartment is 'what you see is what you get'. I liked the sound of the river and the footpath behind the river that led to the supermarket. It was a well-sized apartment for a family of four. We rented our ski-equipment with sport 2000 with a free depot, which came in handy (good service as well!). We liked the apartment, though I must admit the twin beds need new matresses and I was a bit disgusted by the bedding, when we removed the sheets and pillowcases on the last day (blood stains, old pillows). We slept very well, though. IPerhaps that could use a bit renewal... Thanks for letting us use your Apartment! Best regards.

Book another appartment
Unfortunately i can't add pictures to this review to support the points I'm stating here. look me up on socials, I'm happy to share them. Don't book this apartment please book across the street where they were very helpful. This apartment was extremely dirty, and the owner refused and was not able to have it properly cleaned at all. He disconnected the line and has a typical way of communicating, to stay away from his responsibility as a host. We found the Kitchen covered in grease, smelly and sticky. Oven and microwave with foodparts in it, Toilet had poo on the outside, and smelled, large amounts of dust across the apartment, bloodstains on the bedwear, previous guests clothing and a very old can of pringles under the bed, washing machine broken (given other reviews already since 2018). Worn out matrasses with springs poking your ribs and so on. The owner hardly replied to our request for a solution and said the dirt was caused by an open window. He redeemed 40 euro for the cleaning we did in our holiday ourselves. Eventually we had to leave early, the general cleanliness level was dangerous to our health and far away of what we are used to experience in Austria. All in all, it could have been easily solved by just sending in a cleaner. I generally don't do reviews. In this case however I would like to warn you, and I will take the risk of another discussion with the owner.

About the host

Hosted by Jan & David Otter

Host profile image
Rayner Otter is a British husband and wife international business partnership. The apartment at Haus Koenig is one of our private residences which we let for certain periods of the year. We are both ex- ski and mountain guides and understand Alpine tourism and what are the needs and desires of our guests.

We aim to give our guests the same experience that we enjoy whilst here and anticipate that they will, in turn, respect that this is one of our own homes. We therefore always seek responsible and mature families and individuals to share our apartment and the wonderful times we enjoy here.

Why they chose this property

We bought this as a rundown property and fully renovated it to a high standard. We chose this location because it is close to, but not right in the centre (with its apres-ski revellers!), of one of Europe's best winter sports resorts. As keen skiers and mountain walkers this was ideal for us. Easy access from both Salzburg and Munich airports was also important. This riverside apartment is located close to the main ski lift, the Schattberg Xpress, and the resort's shops and restaurants (600 metres away). There are two bus stops close by which afford access to the entire 'Ski Circus'. This boasts over 200kms of pistes connecting Saalbach to Hinterglemm and Leogang There are also toboganning runs, langlauf routes, ice skating and winter wonderland walks. We also love summertime here, too! Nearby Hinterglemm is an easy riverside walk or a local bus with stops as close as 100 metres from the chalet. Alternatively, the bus can take you to Zell am See where there various water activities on the lake. Local trains will take up from Zell am See up the valley to Krimml where you can walk up to the amazing Krimml water falls, a spectacular site. The train or bus is an easy ride into the nearby city of Salzburg. A buzzing and interesting city. Lots of tours can be organised in the city. For children there are lots to do, e.g. just opposite there is a slide, splash and swim resort for you to enjoy. Alternatively, walk up the mountain and picnic around the mountain lakes where you can swim or use your own stand up paddle board.

What makes this property unique

This is a traditional family chalet apartment, renovated to a high standard, encompassing all modern facilities to make a comfortable holiday home, but with a real Alpine feel to it. As an architect, writer and, above all, travellers, we developed our apartment to make the most of it for us to enjoy the winter and summer seasons. That benefit is obviously enjoyed in turn by our guests. With a ski store in the 'keller', an ice bar on the balcony overlooking the river, and a warm traditional Alpine interior, we always feel a great sense of being in the mountains here.
When we came to set it up to let, we used our experience from running mountain holidays to ensure guests get the best benefits - from ski storage at the chalet or lifts, 10 minutes walk away, to all cleaning and linen included
