A wonderful stay, house is perfectly situated with a real bonus of the loading bay directly outside for arrival/departure. Having a gate leading onto the Beck was also very handy.House was the perfect size for two families, we took a floor and bathroom each allowing everyone some space. Table and living room were large enough for everyone to eat together and enjoy board games on rainy days. Will definitely be back!

Fabulous
This cottage is brilliantly positioned we spent 4 nights in Staithes and never used the car. The house is possibly better equipped than our own, particularly in the kitchen. Everything was provided you could wish for even salt, pepper, oil, soap and washing up liquid ( often missing in rentals) and some lovely welcome gifts. We started the weekend as a group of 9 and it accommodated us all around the table. We will definitely return if we get the opportunity.

Thank you for the great review Pippa. For a small place Staithes has a lot to offer so you're right, there's no need to use the car.
It's also very kind of you to notice the small things that do make a difference.

Quite simply a fabulous house in a fabulous destination
Our week in Pelican could not have been better. The moment you walk in the door you feel at home - little treats for adults, kids and dogs! Everything you could possibly want is provided, enough to keep you occupied yet not so intrusive as to make you feel you can't just simply relax.
The kitchen was extremely well supplied with cooking equipment and crockery and was immaculately clean (as was the rest of the house) but the nearby pubs, cafes and bistros (what a choice for such a small place) are definitely worth a visit. The Cod and Lobster and Cleveland Corner were fantastic and everywhere is so dog friendly. All the rooms were welcoming and cosy and the house was adored by the kids - they made themselves right at home and loved having their own bathroom.
Staithes itself provided plenty of activities: exploring the nooks and crannies of the village; hunting for fossils; the Captain Cook Museum; the stepping stones and skimming stones in the river; the shops; discovering the history like the site of the viaduct and of course Captain Jack's house. Further afield there are numerous excellent beaches, great road cycling and Mountain Biking at Sutton Bank, the wonderfully interesting Ironstone Museum and walking up Roseberry Topping.
I will be recommending this to friends and family and hope to return with them - it wouldn't be fair if they went without us!

Lovely, cosy but spacious home from home in superb location
Pelicans is a fantastic, well equipped, cosy, but deceptively big holiday house. The house is everything described in the listing and more. The booking process with the owners was very easy, personal and really helpful. The listing was very accurate with good pictures with added information provided by the owners about access, parking and local amenities and activities before we arrived. The owners picked up on our specific needs and gave us options and answers to the questions we may have needed to ask.
On arrival (with good directions) the house was clean and well maintained and felt like a 'home' with all those bits and pieces you might need and excellent information about how the house 'worked'. There were homely little comments about the quirks of the house.
We would definitely recommend Pelicans to relatives and friends.
There is everything you could need within walking distance; from the COOP supermarket up on the main road to the ice cream van on the quay. There is good reasonable food in the pubs (we went to the George four times - only 50yds), lovely cakes and scones at Dotties, and bread and meat at the butchers. With the harbour, beach, cliffs, fossils, art, walks along the Cleveland Way, Boulby Head, circular walks through the valleys and over the cliffs, not to mention crabbing and bird spotting all from the doorstep there is enough to keep everyone occupied without having to go more than a mile from the house.
However, a trip over the moors and a visit to The North York Moors railway are not to be missed. Brilliant walk from Grosmont to Goathland along the old railway line is stunning, then ride back on the train (or vice versa!). Short detour at Goathland to visit Old Beck and the Mallyan Spout Waterfall well worth the extra half a mile. Used up half a rainy day in Whitby which is so interesting. There is so much more to do that probably we would need to book Pelicans for a couple of months to make a start!

Thanks for highlighting all the fabulous things you can do without straying far from the front door
Beautiful well equipped house in ideal position for shops and beach. Very modern and beautifully clean. Great personal touches. Owner really helpful. Will definitely go back. We only had short stay but would love to book a longer holiday next time.
Hadn’t had a U.K holiday for years but chose to go to Staithes and wanted good accommodation.
Sarah’s place exceeded all expectations. It is lovely, spacious, spotless and so well stocked with everything you need.
Sarah is top host and communicates with you on a personal level.
Can’t wait for next visit!
Would also recommend fishing trip with Martin. We have left his number in guest book
Would recommend...
Property Manager was fab. Friendly, helpful and very accommodating with three challenges brought about by the constant covid-19 changes. Location is very close to everything Staithes has to offer. House is spacious with everything you need from washing machine to dishwasher to sky and internet.
Superbly equipped and attractive house in the heart of Staithes
The cottage is ideally for 2 families of 4, whatever the age of the children. It is set over 3 floors with 2 bathrooms with space for everyone. The ground floor has a fabulously equipped kitchen (we made a pie, from scratch, in it) and a dining room table which is large enough for everyone. Entertainment is provided by the record player, TV with ample selection of DVDs, games etc. We even found a cocktail book with what turned out to be excellent recipes!
The lounge is at the front of the property and seats 6 adults comfortably. The location of the property is ideal, opposite the sweet shop and 2 mins walk from the Royal George pub which serves excellent pub grub. The accommodation, indeed the whole area, is dog-friendly which made life really easy for us. Staithes is extremely pretty and can be the start point for several lovely walks. It has a few gift shops, cafes and a gallery but really surprisingly no general store to top up with milk, bread etc. The shop opposite to the cottage sells food but it is really more of a deli. There is a Co-op a 3 min car ride away though.
All in all we had a wonderful, restful time and wouldn't hesistate in recommending this cottage.
Excellent location with the most interesting pictures and furniture ever found in a holiday cottage. Particularly love the main bedroom chair. And the kitchen contains everything you need from egg cups to tea strainer etc etc Great parking advice too.
We stayed at Pelican for a week in August 2019. We were a party of eight, four adults and four teenagers. Pelican is a gorgeous period house, and very stylish. The house is well equipped with everything you need and we particularly enjoyed using the turntable and WiFi speaker. The location is perfect in the heart of the village , just 5 minutes from the sea. We had a great week exploring Staithes - highlights included swimming in the sea at high tide just the other side of the south breakwater as recommended by the owners, it was truly magical. We also did a whale watching trip arranged by Yorkshire Coast Nature which was wonderful.
We had great food at the Royal George and enjoyed Coble cake at the cafe by the harbour.
The only suggestion I would make is that the mattresses in the bedrooms on the top floor could do with replacing.
Overall a brilliant holiday and a wonderful house.
Two families with now adult ‘kids’ and our two dogs had a wonderful week in the Pelican. Great facilities with a better equipped kitchen than I have at home ! Fish and chips at the cod and lobster are to die for and we won the pub quiz from the friendly locals . Best place for ice cream in the sweet shop directly opposite and fab cream tea in local t shop with enormous scones! They also had a bring your own booze music night when we where there which was a very economical bonus . The pelicans had lovely comfortable beds and enough space for all . The stairs to a third floor got some getting used too as did the hill up to the car park so needless to say we returned fitter !
I would if visiting the area again definitely stop in the pelican again !
I spent many childhood holidays in Staithes in the holiday home my family bought in the 1970s and fell in love with its unique charm then. Guy and I have visited as often as possible over the years and have been lucky enough to buy our own seaside home in the village. We live in Yorkshire so get to spend plenty of time in our favourite place with our three daughters, family and friends.
Why they chose this property
Staithes is unique. It has all the traditional charm without the tourist hustle and bustle. Despite this unspoilt beauty, Staithes has plenty going on with a thriving diverse community of fisherman, artists, small businesses and restaurants.
What makes this property unique
Pelican is in the heart of the village and when we're there we really feel part of Staithes life. It's one of the few larger properties in old Staithes so plenty of room for our family and friends to stay. We love sipping a glass or two in our courtyard and wandering down to the bridge glass in hand to watch the sunset.
