About Kyle Reese
I fell in love with the Outer Banks during my first visit several years ago. The quiet beach of Salvo is my favorite spot to de-stress and I'm excited to share it with other people. This house was truly a labor of love for me. I adore the area, the culture, and the way of life, and try to visit as much as possible. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and if you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to ask.

Awesome property, nice walk to the beach, great views from the house especially the top deck
After 13 hours in the car we arrived. We were eager to get out to explore the house and our dogs, the yard. Great Place had everything we needed. Chance, our vision impaired dog, was able to learn the outside stairs after a few tries and some encouragement. Unfortunately our vacation ended the next day because of a 12 noon mandatory evacuation. We would like to thank the owner Kyle for the call confirming the evacuation. It was hard to believe we were leaving on such a beautiful beach day.
Perfect Week at the Beach
Location, Location, Location! Our family enjoyed our stay and did not want to leave. The house is as described and did not cause any issues. Kids loved having their own space as well as the adults! Owner answered all questions we had prior to our arrival. The spiral staircase has character and adds to the theme and the decor. The views are breathtaking from sunrise to sunset. The house was clean and comfortable. The area is family friendly and the location is perfect. Thank you to Kyle for an amazing week in Salvo and allowing us to enjoy "Sail Away"!
Melissa, thank you so much for choosing "Sail Away" for your family vacation. I'm really glad you and your family enjoyed your stay and I hope you consider us again in the future!
Awesome beach house for your family!
As soon as we walked into the house we loved it! It was more than we expected. The bedrooms were neat and clean and the open living space and kitchen were perfect. The place is funky with a lot of character! The spiral staircase connects the whole place and there are decks and views from every floor.
You are a short walk over the dunes to the beach. It was a perfect fit for our family and we would love to come back!
Severe and Potentially Lethal Safety Hazard For Children and Completely Unhelpful, Unconcerned Owner
Where to begin... As soon as we arrived we noticed that the property’s internal stairwell presents an incredible hazard to young children. One of the low gates to it had no lock at all, the other a failing & improperly installed slide-lock. The spindles holding the rail up were wide enough for many adults to fit through, and kids can actually fit between the stairs themselves.
This being a spiral staircase in a square “shaft” if you fall off the side there is nothing to break your fall from the third or forth floor the whole way to the first floor. The property was (prior to our stay) advertised as “kids welcome”, it now sports a recommended minimum child age of 8. The owner was aware we were bringing two young children. The living space is the middle floor, while the bathrooms and bedrooms are on the first and third floors. Being unable to safely use the stairs inside presented a real issue, as did having to worry about my toddler finding her way into it and then plummeting down the shaft to the first floor.
I spoke to the owner about the situation right away. I sent photos and a video of a stuffed animal larger than my child free falling from the stairwell into the abyss from multiple points on the stairwell, through the spindles, the steps, off the back of his couch... He agreed it was hazardous, he stated he didn’t have children, and hadn’t thought of it. He said if I could arrange other housing he’d let us out of the lease. I searched for homes, but after an hour and half I never heard back from the property manager we also had looking. I called and he said the owner had changed his position on allowing us to leave his property with a refund.
I called the owner who could not “recollect” our conversation from only an hour before. He said he had spoken to his fiancée, & he needed to pay his mortgage, & that since there was a single photo on the listing showing part of the stairs the “contract is binding” he also assured me that if my child free fell multiple stories in his home he wasn’t concerned about liability because he had an insurance policy through VRBO for two million dollars. I nearly reached through the phone... How dare he!?
The hot tub never worked as intended and no hammocks were present either.
VRBO paid for 3 ocean front rooms to move us to on day 3 for 4 nights. The owner refused to refund. American Express ruled in our favor for the entire amount paid. The listing has been slightly modified, but beware.
First we do thank you for your feedback and always use it to improve our home as well as working with our Management Company, Shore Details to improve our service. I do however need to address your comments. If you review our very satisfied guests over the past years you’ll see many (in fact most) have families and children and have had only wonderful things to say about the home, finding it safe, comfortable and enjoyable. We do advertise the home correctly and accurately including pictures of the spiral staircase that we and our guests find to be one of the great features of the home. Safety has never been an issue and your concerns were addressed immediately. I can’t imagine a toddler would ever be left alone near stairs, in our home or any home regardless of the type of staircase. Our Management company would have been most happy to help you find other arrangements with my approval however they were not contacted or asked for assistance. That offer was not due to the home being unsafe but to my desire to help all our guests be comfortable and enjoy their vacation. I am sorry you misunderstood our conversation regarding insurance and our concern, I assure you we are now and have always been concerned that guests find our home the perfect fit, as most have. The hot tub was working for the majority of your stay; as with all things issues can arise and as always was taken care of as soon as you called. As there were no issues that could be considered as causing the home unfit or uninhabitable and again consider guest satisfaction and rave reviews, including immediately prior to your stay we found nothing to warrant a full refund. To my knowledge and based on conversations you had with Shore Details staff your family remained in the home all week enjoying our home and your vacation, it’s great location and the beaches so close by. We do apologize you found the home less than expected and do hope you found time to make some great vacation memories!
Great location, great house
The house was great. Household items provided included (but were not limited to): pots, pans, plates, pyrex, utensils (including items like a spatula and a pizza cutter), salt and pepper. There were also flashlights and extra light bulbs if needed. We cooked several days during the week and were impressed with the kitchen and especially that the appliances were pretty nice for a rental house. The house had lots of cool decorations and nice touches everywhere. There were books in the nook with comfortable couches for reading. The living room was stocked with games for the family - which the kids enjoyed. Also in the living room - two very comfortable couches and a large flat screen. The living room and all three bedrooms had satellite cable (dish). The beach was a short 2 blocks away. Half the distance is on a quiet neighborhood street and half is over the sand dunes. The beach is awesome. The house has a hot tub which we used several times every day. It can fit several people and was very comfortable. Some reviews we read ahead of time mentioned the layout, so here are a few more details. There are 5 floors. Floor 1. Outdoor shower (great temperature and water pressure), parking, several beach toys, and a few wooden tables for laying out beach mats, towels, etc. Floor 2. One bedroom with two twin beds. Second bedroom with one queen bed. Bathroom with a bathtub. Washer and dryer. Sliding doors lead from both bedrooms to a deck with the hot tub. Floor 3. Kitchen, living room, dining area, nook for reading with a chalkboard for kids. Two sets of sliding doors to the back deck which faces the ocean. Floor 4. Master bedroom and master bath. Also an open closet which was nice. You can hear and see the ocean from this level and it is very relaxing. Kudos to the person who picked the curtains on the sliding doors - nicely done. There are sliding doors to an outside deck which has a great view. Floor 5. Observation deck on the roof. You can see ocean waves break from this floor. The view was tremendous. It was beautiful at sunrise (and sunset). Some reviews we read ahead of time mentioned the spiral staircase that goes from floor 1 to 5 with stops on each floor. I thought it was fine. The one person in our party who is a larger person was able to navigate the spiral staircase without much difficulty. The outdoor stairs are fine for luggage. Overall, the location and the view were excellent. We loved it and would highly recommend it.
Great beach house with key features in a fantastic location
First of all, we would definitely stay here again. That is one of the key measurements I use to determine my "star rating." I am not familiar at all with the OBX communities, and picked this Salvo location due to being about midway between Nags Head and Ocracoke. The villages of Nags Head, Avon, and Hatteras have a lot more places to eat and drink. Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo seems to be a lot quieter with a few less places to go out. That is actually what we were looking for, and it turned out to be perfect. You only have to drive 30 minutes north to hit Nags Head, and 20 minutes south to get to Avon. Perfect! For beach-goers, Salvo is also excellent. Walk north up the street in front of this house and you have 2 beach access paths. One is about 2 blocks away, and the other is about 5 blocks. Beautiful winding sand paths lead to the high dunes that protect beachfront homes from the ocean. Our first day on the beach walking north for 3-4 miles, we didn't see a single person. Second time we went out, we might have seen half a dozen. It was a different story up by Rodanthe and down in Avon, where the beaches were pretty busy with people fishing. The house itself seems to be late-70's and well taken care of. This one has some amazing decking with three decks on the ocean side, one on the sound side, and a spectacular rooftop perch that you access through a hatch in the ceiling of the master bedroom. The first level has two bedrooms with a bath, and the large outside deck has the great 6-person hot tub. We were in that thing every night! Next level up has another deck with the kitchen, dining room, and large living room area. The top floor is all the master suite with a mid-size bathroom and large comfortable king bed. In the morning, just turn over to the ocean side and watch the sun come up. The iron spiral stairs on the interior are very interesting! It takes some getting used to, and it is a rather tight fit. After day two, we were accustomed to this. You do have an option of using outside stairs on the deck to bring up bigger suitcases or coolers, but it can be tricky. Small price to pay for such a nice beach house, though. We brought bikes, and spent a lot of time going up to Waterman's where they have great food, drink, and views of the sound side. Definitely do day trips: Pea Island Wildlife Refuge, Kitty Hawk, Cape Hatteras, Ocracoke. So much to do out there! We had a great time, and this beach house was a big reason.
