About Jerri Dodds
I work in a small college in Westchester County, New York. The picture is not exactly glamorous, but it shows how happy it makes me to go to Pole island in Maine. My children are grown now and I have a new job that does not let me spend the whole summer on the island any more. So I am happy to be able to share it with others!
Jerri Dodds purchased this House in 1995
Why Jerri Dodds chose Sebascodegan Island
Harpswell, Maine is one of the most beautiful places in the world. My children were brought up in New York City, and I wanted them to have a place to go to in the summer in which they could experience unadulterated nature. There is not a day that you do not encounter animals, plants and wild views that transform your experience. We explored endlessly, and I know it had a big impact on their lives.
What makes this House unique
When I go to Pole Island, I love waking up early in the morning and taking my tea out in the kayak, paddling quietly through inlets. Sometimes I make drawings or take photos of the birds and animals I see. I also like to work there. It is so calm. (Well, the boys looked at it another way...swimming off the dock, fishing in the morning, king of the mountain off the kayaks, squirt gun wars...and endless games in the woods) It is also an amazing family place. It is often cool enough at night to have a fire in the fireplace, and we play Scrabble or Risk together, in a way we probably wouldn't if everyone was attached to their computers or glued to the TV as we often are at home. It is magical in those moments.

Magical Family Escape
An absolutely perfect vacation destination! Our family rented this home in 2014 as a place to getaway and relax. We woke up every morning to a beautiful sunrise over the water and a new kayak adventure awaiting. With numerous islands and inlets to explore by boat or kayak, our nautical thirst was quenched while our hunger was fulfilled with a quick boat ride or kayak trip to the docks for fresh lobster. Days finished off with a serene sunset and a fire in the fireplace. And, at some point in every day, we took advantage of the outdoor shower where we enjoyed hot water, hot coffee and Baileys and an unforgettable view of the bay. All of our children (2, 9, 12) still talk about the exploring, puzzle doing, climbing in the tree house, and, of course, the gorgeous water. We all are looking forward to returning to this magical place for many more years to come.
A wonderful rustic retreat
My family and I had a wonderful time on Pole Island, from the little boat that we had to drive over, to the fantastic views of the water and lobster fishermen. My boys loved the little trails around the island; they came upon a tree house that they made their own. The house is rustic, and very comfortable. All the amenities such as dishwasher, washer/drier, lots of nice dishes, even table clothes and napkins, were there. Even though it was summer we lit a fire and reveled in the coolness. Mostly we stayed on the Island, but we did go out in the boat to buy lobster, and we took a trip to the outlets in Portland.
The owner was extremely helpful in preparing us for the trip both by phone and email.
The quiet, and the beautiful natural surroundings were a sanctuary from our usual busy life. We hope to go again next year.
Thanks so much! Yes, I should take a picture of the Tree house. It is a wonderful hideaway for kids, not at all far off the ground!
An Unforgettable Week
We rented this home for a week in 2006 and my family still talks about it. With my four kids between the ages of 16 and 20, I wanted to find a special place for us to have a great "togetherness" experience before they all headed off in different directions.
This was that place.
The home is wonderful, the island is beautiful, and the lack of internet/tv/phone was a perfect way for us to have a week of talking to each other, playing darts and board games, kayaking, lounging, reading, and buying lobster right off the boat from the lobstermen.
When we boated over to the town, there were cute little stores, farm markets, and some nice restaurants. We went into Bath for a day and visited the maritime museum.
While on the island, we enjoyed peace and quiet. We saw seals in the ocean and lots of jellyfish floating by like tumbleweed beneath the dock. It was beautiful. I would love to go back again. If we can ever all get a week off at the same time again, I know this would be at the top of our list.
The house is on an island very close to the shore. You will have your own parking place in the lot on the mainland, and from there you can find fresh groceries and wonderful lobster restaurants 10 minutes away. On our land, the shore is rocky and wooded, but nearby on Bailey Island there is a little sandy beach, and a bit farther north is Popham beach, on the the most beautiful national seashores there is. In historic Brunswick Maine, 15-20 minutes away, there are super markets, shops, movies, bowling, antiques, miniature golf and a wide variety of restaurants. Since it is a college town, there is also summer stock theatre and museums. A little father on is Freeport, home of the original LL Bean store, and the best outlet shopping on the east coast, but all in a charming New England town with great food, minutes from the ocean.
