About Paul Smethurst
Retired English professor and his wife who live in Bali and Dorset.
Paul Smethurst purchased this Villa in 2007
Why Paul Smethurst chose Candikuning
The villa was bought by the owners as a cool retreat from their main home in South Bali - we come to enjoy the cool fresh air and unique environment, and to stock up on local coffee, vegetables, fruit and plants from the botanical gardens. Ideal for those looking for a quiet and peaceful short break or as second base for a larger tour of Bali. The house is popular with local expats who book it up most weekends at short notice, so for a longer stay, you need to book a few weeks in advance.
What makes this Villa unique
Cool mountain air, ideal base for trekking or exploring this unique area of mountains and waterfalls, taking wooden canoes on the lakes and visiting coffee, clove and other spice plantations.

Luxury in Bedugul
We live in south Bali and come to Bedugul several times a year. After 10 years, finally we found the perfect place to stay ! The view from the villa is spectacular, the villa itself is beautifully decorated and comfortable, and the staff is warm and welcoming. And the heated towel rack ? Absolute luxury in the cool Bedugul weather.
The owner is responsive and helpful. From now on, we'll go to Bedugul only if this villa is available. An absolutely wonderful stay.
Idyllic Mountain Stay
As soon as you step into the villa, it's hard to believe you are in Bali. Leave behind the super-hip hotels and crowds of the south or the buzz of Ubud and savor a few nights just to breathe cool, mountain air in a chalet that feels like Europe.
We stayed 2 nights in the villa with 2 young kids (age 2, 7) who ran around the huge garden all day and drank hot cocoa on the porch overlooking the mountains and lake. The villa has 3 bedrooms and two large indoor sitting areas -- in addition to an amazing yard and outdoor patio -- a great getaway for a family or group of friends. It is tucked away in the hills of Bedugul, neighboring a mix of other chalets/villas, some abandoned, others restored. The overall effect is that of a secret getaway.
The villa itself is in very good condition, although don't expect "luxury" as it has wear and tear from the mountain air, which is to be expected (and is, quite frankly, part of its charm). The guest book signed by other guests leaves great tips and advice for what to do in the area. The villa manager is helpful in arranging anything (even helping to start the wood stove if you can't figure it out!) and helps arrange a driver, which is needed.
My one feedback is that it would do good to air out the rooms before guests arrive as they are quite stuffy/dusty upon arrival. It also would help to stock more toiletries/towels and staples for the kitchen as supplies are hard to come by. At the time of our visit they were building a new villa just above -- the noise didn't bother us as our kids woke early anyway, but if you are sensitive, check with villa manager about it.
Be prepared to pack warm clothes as the nights and mornings are cold (even with the wood stove burning) -- a welcome change from the beaches and other areas of Bali. Amenities around the villa are limited -- but that is the point. Be sure to stock up on groceries somewhere else if you want to cook (the local market has produce but is limited on other staples). Nearby restaurants are mixed in terms of food - but great for kids, especially with playgrounds and lots of space to run and climb.
If you want to breathe fresh, cool air in a gorgeous setting, this is your place. I would recommend at least 2 nights.
Great family stay!
Our family stayed here for 6 days and loved every minute. Paul was great to deal with and the local staff looked after us well. If you are looking for the party atmosphere of Kuta then Bedugul is not for you. But if you want peace and quiet in a beautiful setting then you can end your search here.
Awesome Chalet in quiet beautiful location
I stayed in the Bedugal Chalet in Dec 2010 with my wife and her family. It was perfect ; clean, very comfortable, great views, close to local shops. We walked from the Chalet and had the most amazing walks down to the lake. Really there is nothing I can fault about it.
A great place for time out!
I have just returned to Perth from a one week stay in this cabin in Bedugul. We had a wonderful time there. The weather was so much cooler than the coastal areas of Bali and there were virtually no tourists in the area. The accomodation was fabulous and beautifully appointed. Ketut and Kadek (our gardener and cleaner) were both helpful and friendly, as were all of the other locals we met along the way. I would highly recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a relaxing break in nice accomodation with great views while within easy access to other great places. The only recommendation I would make is to organise car hire before you arrive (you need an IDL) and perhaps shop for some groceries before you arrive at the cabin. We hired a car and I found the driving easy - not stressful at all.
Driving in Bali - this is the first time we heard of a guest having a traffic accident and it didn't sound too serious. But driving yourself is not recommended if you are not familiar with driving in Asia. Patience is the main thing and expect the unexpected. At road junctions few people follow the usual rules, and motorbikes can be on the wrong side of the road or cutting across in front of you. If you stay calm and drive slowly without sudden moves it is ok. Self-drive car hire is available in Bedugul, or for a more relaxing holiday we can arrange a car with driver.
This well-appointed villa is located among a dozen other wooden houses in the Lake District of central Bali. It directly overlooks Lake Beratan at Bedugul where one of the island's most important TEMPLES is located. This is the one that appears on all the holiday programs and tourist images of Bali. As well as visiting the temple and the famous MARKET, you can take BOATS out on the lake. Right in the milddle of Bali, the villa is about one hour's drive from the airport and within one hour of everywhere else in Bali (Ubud, Seminyak, Lovina, Sanur, Nusa Dua etc.). The air is fresh and sometimes cool (5-10 degrees cooler at night) - an ideal alternative to the steamy beach resorts. Why not take a two-centre holiday with a week here and a week in our other villa at Tumbuk Bayuh (property 58274)? Bedugul is famous for year-round fruit, vegetable and spice-growing. Get supplies direct from Kadek, our housekeeper or visit the bustling MARKETS. Bedugul also has BOTANICAL GARDENS, RAIN FOREST TREKKING, GITGIT waterfall, a YOGA CENTRE and the ECO-RESORT of Munduk is nearby. North Bali BEACH resorts, DOLPHIN watching, snorkelling and diving are at Lovina (50 mins). The regional centre of Singaraja (40 mins) has shopping, MUSEUMS and old COLONIAL BUILDINGS, as well as small pier with restaurants and childrens play area. TRANSPORT - if you don't already have a car/driver, we can arrange this for you, or scooter hire if you prefer. Scooters are a good option for local trips around the lakes. Car with driver is a bit more expensive here than in the rest of Bali - about GBP15-25 (incl petrol) depending how far you want to go.
