About Ward and Sarah Crawford
Hi! We are Ward and Sarah, and we have been visiting Western Crete for nearly 10 years now. We decided to build a house here in 2015, originally calling it "Agrio Thymari" (which means "Wild Thyme" in Greek) to celebrate the wild herbs and flowers that grew in profusion in the disused olive grove in which we decided to build. But our family took to calling it "The Seaside House" and so that has now become its name!
Ward and Sarah Crawford purchased this Villa in 2016
Why Ward and Sarah Crawford chose Kissamos
There are still very few houses this size available to rent in this stunning part of Crete and we wanted ours to be as flexible as possible: it has been designed to suit an extended family group, two families sharing a holiday together, or maybe three or four couples taking time out with each other. It also works wonderfully as a three bedroom villa, which is how we prioritise its use, providing a combination of space and comfort to a smaller group. The setting is peaceful and spectacular, and yet beaches and tavernas are readily accessible.
What makes this Villa unique
Access to Elafonisi and Kedrodasos beaches is within 20 minutes; a pebbly (stone) beach is a 15 minute walk, with lovely sea swimming in the bay. There are uninterrupted panoramic views of the Mediterranean and fabulous sunsets from the pool and all the terraces, and wonderful night skies filled with stars. We have decorated the house with the vivid colours of this part of Crete and have had much of the furniture designed and made by local craftsmen. The house has been designed with a combination of traditional and modern techniques to ensure that it remains cool without the need for wasteful energy intensive air-conditioning in every room. Natural ventilation makes use of the cool sea breezes and the "Meltemi" summer-wind blowing from the north, while high levels of insulation, thick stone walls and few south facing windows keep out the worst of the sun's heat. There are ceiling fans and slatted, lockable shutters in every bedroom, and another ceiling fan in the lounge. For those who do feel the heat however, we have installed air conditioning in the three rented bedrooms, but suggest these be used sparingly. The pool has been designed to be family friendly with the only access via lockable gates. All the winter rains falling on the house and terrace are captured in an underground tank, and used to water the olive grove and top up the swimming pool, important on an island with limited water resources.
