Spacious 4 bedroom/3 bathroom Traditional Open-Air Home
Aloha! We are Mary (mom) and Jaya (daughter). We currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area but I've spent a lot of time traveling - and some time working - in the Hawaiian Islands, and the Big Island is home number #2. We travel a lot! Many of our trips have been for surfing (Costa Rica, Mexico, Bali, Fiji, Tahiti, Lombok, various Hawaiian islands), but many more have been 'just because.' And when we travel we love to stay somewhere that is beautiful but not necessarily fancy -- ideally, somewhere that reflects the essence of the place we are visiting and makes us feel like we've truly lived in and experienced the place -- instead of being isolated in a tourist-filled, generic resort.
Mary purchased this House in 2016
Why Mary chose Captain Cook
We fell in love with our Pagoda House the first minute we laid eyes on it. It is the essence of all the things I love about the Hawaiian Islands. We love the open air design of the house and the way it brings in the sound of ocean waves and tropical birds. We love that it feels like a giant, well-furnished tree-house. We love the open air shower upstairs (and the outdoor shower in the back-yard). We love the half-acre+ tropical gardens with mangos, bananas and tropical flowers blooming everywhere. We love that the house is renovated 'just enough' (high quality appliances and everything up to date, but not overly-fancy). We love that plumeria flowers fall into the pool while we are swimming in it and that the birds and geckos come to visit us there. We love the sleepy, one-lane road qualities of the neighborhood, and that it is a mix of local families and vacation rentals. We love that we don't have to get in the car to dive into the pristine waters of the Kealakekua Bay Marine Sanctuary (it's just across the one lane road and is widely considered some of the best snorkeling in the islands). We love our neighborhood beach park and community garden -- and that 'Aunty Sandy' who watches over it will sometimes share its local bounty if the particular thing I need was missing up at the ChoiceMart that day.
What makes this House unique
The resorts (and big-box stores) of Kailua-Kona are only 15 minutes away but, at Pagoda House, you feel a world away. Our four-mile road down from the main highway protects us from the hustle and bustle. Just sleepy nature and ocean here and, at night, a sky filled with stars. You can get to the 'resorty' areas very easily. But you aren't going to see any of that down here. There is a reason they call this 'the Big Island' -- you could fit every other Hawaiian Island within its borders. But, with a little planning, almost everything this spectacular and diverse island has to offer is a day trip from Pagoda House. It's just 70 miles around the south tip of the Island to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and about the same distance North and East to the Waipi'o Valley. This island is unique in that it has 10 of the world's 14 climate zones. You don't like the weather where you are? Drive somewhere else! ;-)

This house is the perfect location and has everything you could possibly want.
This house looks exactly like the photos online. It’s extremely comfortable and casual elegant for family and friends. The pool is just added bonus for early morning and late night swims. The beach and the surf is just across the street for great snorkeling. Good location for traveling to and from. We loved it as did our family of 8!
This house was awesome. It had everything you could need for a vacation. The location was very quiet and the views were breathtaking.
A Perfect Paradise
Our family of eight (3 adults and 4 children aged 12, 12, 7, and 3) loved this house. The location was perfect, the house itself was nothing short of magical, and the bays and beaches around it were what your Hawaiian dreams are made of. We played in the pool every evening/Inight, made family dinners, and took early morning walks to the different beaches each day with our coffee and breakfast. We couldn’t get enough of the singing birds and geckos who watched over us. Truly perfection and we will come back!
Mahalo Lael — we just love sharing our home with families who appreciate it and our lovely, sleepy neighborhood as much as we do. Thanks for taking such great care of the house and we home to see you again. A hui hou!
Tropical paradise. Pretty kid friendly
The other reviewers did a great job of describing the beautiful home and stunning setting. We had a wonderful stay. We traveled with three kids, age 6, 4, and 8 mos. In this review I am trying to share some info that I hope will be useful to other families traveling with kids.
Pros for kids:
- When we were there the house had a lot of kids gear available. The home had a high chair, a pack and play, pool toys, sand toys, life jackets, kids size masks and fins. (I asked Mary before we arrived and she told me there was no portable crib, but there was!)
- Beautiful yard to play in. There aren't great photos to capture the front and back yard that are great for play and exploring. There are beautiful fruit trees in the lovely landscaped front yard, and open space in the back yard.
- It is wonderful to be walking distance to the state park with laws and tide pools. There aren't sandy beaches per se, but my kids had a great time playing in the surf.
Considerations for kids
- The lovely screen home style is amazing and so much nicer than a locked in A/C home BUT it makes it a little difficult to control night time noises. We had some kids wake up in the night and that was sometimes disturbing to other members of our party. That said, the room with twin beds does have a window that closes and an AC unit to create a little white noise, so depending on the number of night wakers the screens may or may not be an issue.
- The pool does not have security to keep kids out. There are gates (more than in some homes we looked at) but the gates are easily opened by our 4 year old. It seems like regulations are a little different in Hawaii than they are in some mainland states so you might not be able to find a pool that kids can't access on their own.
- Two of our kids slept upstairs while the baby was in the locked room and it was a little annoying that the ceiling fan over the bed was low enough for them to touch. That meant we had to keep the fan off which was a little bit of a bummer, but there was another fan in the room on a different switch so we still had some moving air.
Overall we loved the place. It felt like an authentic unique setting and we would stay again.
A Place in Paradise
We spent a week at Pagoda House with our children and grandchildren and we were all blown away by this amazing home and property which provided us with one of the most enjoyable and meaningful family vacations we've ever had. It was truly the old Hawaiian experience with the beautiful, spacious, open air home, lush landscape and quiet local neighborhood. The home itself was lovely- very private, wonderful floor plan, tastefully furnished and well stocked. We used the barbecue and prepared most meals there. We stocked up at Safeway and Costco before heading down for the week, then filled in with Choicemart in Captain Cook. They had a good selection of food and the best local fish we found.
We found plenty of enjoyable activities and places to visit not far from our home base. We walked to a kayak rental on Kealakekua Bay and rented 4 double kayaks. We paddled up close to a large pod of wild spinner dolphins, and my 10 year old granddaughter jumped in and swam with them. We loved the "Place of Refuge" national park a few miles down the road. We explored the small local beaches which were walking distance from the house and drove south a bit to Ho'okena Beach park (and stopped for delicious smoothies at South Kona Fruit stand) a couple of times. We drove up to Volcanoes National Park one day, with the highlight being a guided lava cave tour which was about 1/2 way to the park. We also enjoyed the parrot sanctuary near Captain Cook.
Everything about the Pagoda House made our experience there unique and wonderful and one we will always treasure and remember.
Mahalo for the kind review, Karen -- we are so delighted that you and your 'ohana had such a wonderful stay (and a terrific dolphin encounter in the bay in front of our house!) We truly love sharing our home with families like yours that 'get' it and appreciate the kama'aina charms of our sleepy and historic neighborhood. We hope to see you again sometime.
Beautiful property, great location!
We loved this gorgeous house, and its garden and pool. We loved being able to hear the birds and the ocean all throughout the house. And watching the sunset each night from the upstairs bedroom area! The house is very well equipped with modern appliances, ample space, and comfortable decor.
The neighborhood was great too, with lots of special vistas and sacred sights. It really is a very special place.
We would come back in a heartbeat!
Mary was very nice and very helpful and had extensive information available to help us make the most of the trip.
