Why Dave and Penny Stabenfeldt chose Dillon Beach

Dillon Beach is less windy than Bodega Bay and much less foggy than Stinson Beach or Bodega Bay combined! The traffic is minimal. Our property is 100 yards from the beach with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Point Reyes Peninsula and Tomales Bay.

What makes this house unique

The house is uniquely positioned to provide backyard sun and privacy, surrounded by a beautiful, tranquil garden. Two outdoor showers to ease the transition from a day at the beach to relaxing in the hot tub - the hot tub is not sand friendly :). Enjoy a book or meditation in upstairs nook with panoramic views...great for watching the sun set.

Comfortable, lovely views and great location!

We came to Dillon Beach to enjoy the long Thanksgiving weekend ... only to have a torrential storm hit the coast! But, thankfully, this sweet home provided all the comfort and amenities my husband and I, and our son's family (+ our 8 year old granddaughter) needed for a stay-in of cooking, eating, football and game-playing weekend! We had such fun and, yes, took walks to the beach as the weather cleared, zipped up to the store (2 blocks away) for ice cream runs, and then -- the best treat -- sitting in the soothing hot tub for relaxation after dinner.

The home is kept extremely clean by the owners - who are very attentive - and the layout is wonderful for an entire family (or 2-3) to either share time or have privacy in the very spacious bedrooms with fabulous views! The living room is large enough for everyone to sit comfortably, and there is Direct TV (nice) which the guys liked. We gals especially loved the dining room that has a large table that will seat 10-12. It was our gathering place for snacks, meals and games we left up and going the entire weekend. One last good point, there is a parking place in front of the garage so you can park parallel on the driveway of the property. From the house, there is a shortcut to the beach which is very close. Coming home from the beach, there is an outside shower so you can wash up before coming in. Note: The home is 2 levels, but there is a bedroom & 1/2 bath on 1st floor, so that is very handy for some folks who don't do stairs. All in all, it is very user-friendly, and immediately set up for FUN!

Owner's Response: Cathy & Family were great! We had a family the days before just trash the house and not be honest..... The prior rental was for 5-6. Actual was 11 .Kathy D Zink broke our refrigerator, took items, lost the house key, and it took us 4.5 hours of 4 people to get it ready for Cathy C E. Cathey . Kathy D Z - (prior rental - also left a second home is disarray).CE left us a beautiful note at the house. Thank you VRBO for supporting your 10 year cleint. VRBO #90346

The Unfriendly House

The Unfriendly House

Great location but we would not rent this house again. We counted 49 warning signs posted around the house telling visitors what not to do. It felt less like a vacation and more like a four day scolding. Garbage service is canceled in winter so you are expected to bring it home with you (including your used toilet paper which may only be placed in a waste paper basket due to the much reminded of delicate septic system) but the few garbage bags provided are too cheap to trust so we bought our own at the local store. There was also a distinct lack of supplies such as toilet paper and cleaning supplies- we used some threadbare rags we found in the cabinets to clean the kitchen and were charged an extra $55 by the owners for replacing “hand towels.” The hot tub was only warm (not hot), and the only indoor shower would not work for us - the owners reported after that it was not broken. We were able to use the shower in the unheated garage. Despite this list of complaints we loved Dillon Beach and will be back, just to a different house. We were a little late renting so didn’t have a lot of options and chose to ignore the other concerning reviews and vindictive responses from the owners. This was not an inexpensive rental to have little supplies, and feel unwelcome (plus cleaning fee is taken out of the "refundable" security deposit while other places list the cleaning fee up front as part of the cost).

Owner's Response: We appreciate the renters comments. Our rental property is more of a home than a cabin so we do make requests to respect and take care of our home. We are not sure where 49 warning signs are located. There is a check in/out sheet in the kitchen, and “septic” reminders in the bathrooms. The upstairs shower is in working order. Apparently the renter was unable to operate it. We wish they would have called and asked for help. The hot tub is in working order, including temperature, so we are not sure what might have happened. We have had the hot tub checked to make sure everything is working appropriately. There is an abundance of cleaning supplies—three cabinets full. The $55 charge was not for hand towels. It was for cleaning dirty pots, pans, utensils, and dishes. The rental agreement specifically states that there is a cleaning fee.

PROS: good location, nice ocean view from bedroom, decent cookware

CONS: mattresses are cheap, lumpy and not comfy, linens and towels old and threadbare, many windows not operable, numerous notes posted around the house telling visitors what NOT to do- one or two notes would have sufficed. All the "Do Nots" took some joy out of the visit and put everyone on edge a bit.

Parking available for one car only. Street parking is difficult.

Our stay was somehow double booked so we were asked to cut our stay one day short. My refund was short by $50 bucks which the owner later refunded along with the security deposit but then charged me a $47 VRBO fee. In my opinion the VRBO fee should have been waived due to the double booking and the inconvenience .

In short, this was not a relaxing or enjoyable experience.

Owner's Response: Robin, I am sorry that you were unhappy with our mattresses. The towels are white and are bleached between each rental. VRBO has a new on line booking "feature". VRBO double booked one of your blocked out dates. VRBO also charged an electronic fee for your reservation. That was a surprise to us as well. The windows are being replaced this spring 2018. The village of Dillon Beach does not offer alot of parking as the beach goers/ surfers come early and take up many of the spots. That is why we go out and save a spot for you, as we did upon your arrival. Thank you for renting our home.

Nice house, horrable owners!

Property is nice. Owners are not. I noticed they write that they never get bad reviews, not true! I have written a bad review and have read others. Some how the owners erase them. Think about it, only 10 reviews? I've been renting homes in Dillon beach for 30 years, this was first bad experience. Be aware the home has like 5 towels, thread bare. Kitchen is very lacking. Bring your own spices, baking dishes etc. They didn't even have salt. We stayed last Thanksgiving. The owners showed up 15 minutes early on day after Thanksgiving, and starting yelling at us. They did not return my deposit of 500. Never happened to me before. They didn't even bother with sending me reason. Because they rushed us out the keys went missing I guess, because we didn't have them. They did call to tell me they were charging me to get all new locks. Gee we have lost keys before and most charge between 10$ and 50$ For anyone else thinking of renting beach homes at Dillon's it is usually perfection. I've never have even met the owners before, just spoke on phone. All of them have been nothing but super nice and helpful. Its very friendly there, everyone is great. Just not these owners. Don't stay here. Not when there's so many friendly ones. The worse thing was that my Grandkids were there and they were very upset, very. Not a nice way to end our holiday. Ps. We did have everything clean, refridgerator emptied, sheets off bed etc....

Owner's Response: C.Zink. Your reservation was for 5-6 people. You actually had 11. The cleaning crew of 4 took 4.5 hours. The handle of the refrigerator door was broken off, the house keys were lost- resulting in 4 locks having to be changed. You personally said, "I know I will not be getting the security deposit back".The renters who came in after you had a glowing review.

Great Location But House With Lots of Problems and Regulations!!!

This is the second time we have rented the house due to the convenient location and space, but this time around it proved to be a waste of money and a nuisance. When you are away from home, celebrating the holidays and enjoying time with family you should feel comfortable and hopefully have all the conveniences of your own home for the money we paid.

A bungy cord to close the oven door in order to heat it (ridiculous). This should be fixed!! It was a hassle. We decided to BBQ one night instead of dealing with the oven but upon opening the BBQ, we discovered how disgustingly dirty and rusty if was. We opted not to BBQ. A front door that didn’t open from the inside, not enough towels for 5 people, not enough toilet paper or paper towels provided, and very strict rules from the owner provided 2 days prior to arrival, makes this place an uncomfortable stay.

The house is big with a nice layout, large living room and dining room table for dinner and to play games. There is a pool table but there was only one usable cue, which isn’t going to work unless you want to play a solo game! Last year there were more usable cues. FYI, pool table is located in garage which is freezing and hard to play in the winter time.

Last but not least, there is no garbage service during the winter, so you are asked to take your garbage home with you (is this Burning Man?). We had 3 full garbage bags, luggage for 5 people, 5 people in the car, plus dog, so there isn’t a lot of room for garbage bags (plan to ride out with them on your lap!).

Owner's Response: In response to this review, it’s important to note that we have been renting our home for 10 years on VRBO and this is the only complaint we have received, other than when we had renters who broke a toilet and repair was delayed because it was a holiday weekend. We always appreciate being made aware of things that need repair so that we can take corrective action. The front door knob has been fixed and the pool sticks have been repaired. The BBQ, while accumulating rust caused by the salt air, is cleaned after each visit. We have provided similar provisions for every renter—towels, paper towels, and toilet paper—without any complaints. This year we upgraded the kitchen with new dishware, flatware, frying pans, and glassware. The appliances are the same as last year when this family rented our home. With respect to rules, we do ask renters to treat our home with respect—to keep occupancy consistent with the headcount on the rental agreement, to understand that the house is on a septic system (and to treat it with care), and to conserve water because of drought conditions. The rules are sent prior to each rental with the location of the key. The Ramirez family, (repeat renters), received the same instructions last year. We are a “no pet” rental listing. We made an exception and allowed this family to bring their pet. Canceling garbage service during the winter months is due to storms and winds. This has been our procedure for years, and the Ramirez family, (repeat renters), have been aware of it. And yes, the house is big, with a nice layout, including a backyard with ocean views and hot tub, and in a great location…a short walk to the beach.

Simply Sublime!

Where to start! My husband and I were seeking a true getaway near the ocean with proximity to Sonoma wine tasting---well Oyster Shell could not have been more perfect for us. We have not seen this level of sparkling cleanliness ever before in a rental property, well appointed in every way, with every detail attended to by the delightful owner who personally checked us in. The views were such a bonus to the value, from the magical little gardens to the upstairs rooms. We had such fun walking at the beach, and so convenient to be able to shower off outside upon returning to this charming home away from home. Wine tasting just a short drive away, as promised, making for great fun by day then returning to our quiet escape by night. Cannot wait to return again and again, thank you!!
