Roanoke Island Outdoors - sleeps 6, plus Bicycles, Kayaks, Beach Gear, More

Bedrooms 1
Property type apartment

About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

This is a nice apartment that will sleep 6. It's a one bedroom, so 6 adults might be tight! It has two queens (a bed and a futon) in the bedroom and a queen hideabed in the living room. It has one full bath and a full kitchen.

Very bright, airy, and spacious, one bedroom, one bath, garage apartment in a quiet neighborhood on Roanoke Island. Private entrance with private parking. Located on the bike path, just a ten minute bike ride to Manteo Waterfront, North Carolina Aquarium, Fort Raleigh, The Lost Colony, and Elizabethan Gardens. Ten minute (car) ride to the beach or numerous cool places to paddle.

Important note: PLEASE read all the details. This is a second floor garage apartment on the back of my home. I live by "reduce, reuse, recyle", and the unit is furnished according to this. I live on an unpaved road. When it rains, there are puddles. There is never a danger of getting stuck. You could probably describe the area as "rural," and I LOVE it. But, there are no covenants, and I cannot control my neighbors yards. These are inexpensive, CLEAN, and comfortable places to stay. This is NOT the Hilton. Renters are expected to clean before they leave, including doing all the laundry. I inspect and re-clean, as needed. It's fine to bring your own sheets and towels to save from doing laundry. But, please read all the details, so you don't have unreasonable expectations!

Lots of bicycles and attachments, a tandem ocean kayaks, two tandem Carolina Keowee kayaks, and a canoe, plus all the paddles and life vests. Also includes a 'tag-along' which is a great way for a younger child to safely participate in bike rides... All the comforts of home - everything you need for a quiet getaway! Special note: The is no sound access from my house. In order to use the boats, you must have a means to transport them safely.

Roanoke Island is located in the sound, west of the barrier islands of the Outer Banks. It is away from the hustle, bustle and traffic that are often associated with the more 'touristy' part of the Outer Banks. The area offers two national wildlife refuges within a half-hour, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and a wide assortment of water and land related recreational opportunities.

Roanoke Island is traversed by a beautiful bicycle path that runs along the Roanoke Island Corrider. From the 'bike path', visitors may reach all the historic, cultural, and natural spots of the island, including the North Carolina Aquarium, The Lost Colony, Elizabethan Gardens, Roanoke Island Festival Park, public boat ramps and swimming areas, and great places to fish, bird, or just watch the sun set. For explorers, there are great day trips to state parks, private preserves, or other national wildlife refuges! Manteo is the ideal place to plan a host of day trips throughout eastern North Carolina.

This rental is my opportunity to share the things I love about living on Roanoke Island. Any advice or comments you might offer, I would certainly appreciate!

Things to See and Do on The Outer Banks:

You know what they say about real estate... the three most important things are location, location, and location!

- The Beach - Nags Head beaches and Cape Hatteras National Seashore are just a ten minute drive. The apartment includes beach chairs, boogie boards, and Ocean Kayaks (great for the ocean).

- Roanoke Island - Roanoke Island offers so much, I am always amazed that anyone ever leaves it (I seldom do...). The North Carolina Aquarium, Roanoke Island Festival Park, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, the Elizabethan Gardens, the Lost Colony, and downtown Manteo are incredible spots you will not want to miss. My house is right off the Bike Path (about 100 yards) - and we live on a private, dead-end road (only five houses on the road). All the places I just mentioned are no more than a ten-minute bike ride from the apartment - and I furnish the bikes!

- Paddling Spots - Everywhere from the ocean to the sound and all kinds of bays, creeks, canals, and rivers. I provide lots of information about places to paddle on Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges and all around the Outer Banks.

- Take a Walk on the Wild Side!

Hatteras Island, about 30 minutes away by car, offers wonderfully pristine beaches and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Pea Island has a sound access at New Inlet that's ideal for putting in kayaks or canoes to paddle in the sound. There is a great little Visitor Center, two very nice wildlife trails, and the beaches are out-of-this-world. Pea Island offers the nicest beaches on the Outer Banks.

Roanoke Island has a number of places to paddle, including all around the Elizabeth II (the replica of the ship the first English came over on... in Shallowbag Bay in downtown Manteo. You could even take a long day and paddle completely around Roanoke Island!

Dare County Mainland offers a number of adventures... paddling, walking, driving... Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge has 15 miles of color-coded paddling trails... the trail is about 30 minutes from my door! The Refuge also has a black bear population - and you can actually predictably see bears in the wild!

Bonnie was a great help throughout our entire stay. If there was any problem I knew hat I could text or call her and she would answer. She was very thoughtful and personable the entire trip and made us feel very welcomed. It felt as if we were staying at family's home. They were such great host that they even made a dog toy for our hyperactive puppy. Thank you so much everything!

Good place to stay, worths the money I have payed

  • 4 of 5

In general it was a good place to stay.

The unit has everything you need and also all the bikes and beach accessories ( chairs, umbrellas etc) are very helpful and usable.

Bonnie, the owner, was nice and responsive.

The location is good.

The general cleaning and the cleanliness level needs improvement.

I would go back and stay there.

Owner's Response: The "parts" that were pointed out as needing cleaning were the ceiling fans and windows. Spring cleaning is done the beginning of the season- several months ago. I simply failed to notice those areas as needing cleaning, but have cleaned them good! (I'm not a professional cleaner....) Thanks for pointing them out! This unit is "self-cleaning"- I have a checklist I inspect between renters... will add "windows and ceiling fans" to the list!

Glamping at its best. Loved the outside hammock!!

  • 4 of 5

The site had all we needed and was the perfect base for our adventures. We brought our own bedding, which helped with the clean up process. The location is not on the beach but everything was within short driving distance. The owner was very helpful with sharing some of the local favorite locations. The small kids enjoyed playing in the large bedroom closet as their own secret tree house. Overall, a very good experience.

Not what we expected

  • 2 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in Manteo, but the apt. was not what we expected- furnishings are out-dated, stained and limited. Setting was off an unpaved road next to cluttered neighbors in a 2nd floor apt. We were surprised that we were expected to clean and do our laundry. Apartment was comfortable, pet-friendly, had AC and internet. We will not return, but wish Bonnie success in renting her property.

Owner's Response: I was surprised by this review, because the things described as issues (though true) were totally and thoroughly described on the VRBO website. The furniture is clean, but, yes, there are a few marker stains, etc. (It's a furnished rental apartment managed to help families who would otherwise be unable to come to the beach.) I allow children and dogs.... I describe the unit as a second floor garage apartment furnished in recycled things and located on an unpaved road in a quiet neighborhood. I will admit, it was a rainy week, so the road had puddles all week - no danger of getting stuck, but puddles, nonetheless. And, the site CLEARLY states renters are required to leave the unit clean and ready for the next folks, including doing laundry. I offer the option of bringing personal sheets and towels, to avoid having to do laundry. I don't charge a cleaning fee, and I still clean behind each renter. I LOVE my rural road, and yes, there is clutter in some of the neighboring yards. I really cannot do much about that. I will look back over my descriptions and revise, as needed, to be more clear. But, honestly, I can't do much about renters not reading the descriptions before they book. And, after asking numerous times for them to let me know if there were any issues, I never heard a single word about any of this until today. The only comment I heard was that one of my bikes had a bad tire (I have 19 bikes). So, I set it aside to replace the tire. I describe my units EXACTLY how they are. Most of my guests love the concepts I use - reduce, reuse, recycle. Many return year after year. I understand that my units will not make everyone happy. They are intended for cost-conscious folks who are looking for clean and affordable housing to enjoy the beautiful Outer Banks. I don't claim to be the Hilton - and I don't charge Hilton prices. I believe I provide exactly what I state. Thanks so much for the opportunity to respond to this review. For potential renters, please feel free to ask all the questions you like. I'm pretty friendly and quick to respond. This review makes me sad, and I agree... we're not a good match. But, I cannot think of anything that I could have done to make them happier, even if they had talked with me while they were here.
