About this property

Shellback: Panoramic Ocean Views. Fast internet. Views of Wilsons Prom.

Set on 75 private acres with spectacular views of Wilson’s Promontory across the ocean, Shellback is the kind of place where you can truly escape from the world. Your only neighbour here will be the cows, sheep and native wildlife who have made Shellback their home.
Hidden from the main road beyond a paddock, two dams and down a tree lined road-way, your surprisingly comfortable retreat awaits. The house and garden sits in an island surrounded by farmland. You’ll see cattle or sheep graze quietly around all sides of the house. A short walk across the paddock leads to the private nature reserve and walking trails.
Shellback has all the creature comforts you need for a relaxing getaway with family and friends, including three French linen clad bedrooms, all with ocean views.
There are three large decks. One to the north to maximise the Wilsons Prom and ocean views. One roofed deck that provides great views, shelter and couches to relax and BBQ. A third shade sail deck on the lake (dam) side is a shady spot surrounded by trees. We built the decks to draw guests outside and to take in the scenery and country sounds – there’s not a car to be heard or neighbours to be seen.
One of our favourite pastimes at Shellback is cooking from scratch in the fully functional kitchen. Then chatting away the evening around the living room table with those dearest to us. A long weekend or a week away, the choice is yours but know that we have everything you need on hand for the most comfortable of stays. With lightning fast internet, it's also a great place to work from home.
The owners of Shellback have dedicated the lower third of the property to wildlife conservation - several creeks meander through the bushland and walking tracks have been cut, so there is plenty of exploring to do without leaving the property. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot kangaroos, koalas, wombats and echidnas during your stay. A map of the trails will be provided to guide your exploration.
It’s a 40-minute drive to Wilsons Promontory National Park, full of rugged charm and stunning secluded beaches. Many say it’s the most beautiful part of Victoria. It’s extraordinary, it has its own weather patterns which are a joy to watch from Shellback.

On booking we provide a comprehensive "Things To Do" guide which includes wineries, distilleries, best eateries, rail trails, local artisans and producers.
You may not even want to leave the property - play bocce on the lawn, table tennis in the shed, play family board games on the floor, sit by the fire with a glass of red, sketch the rolling hills, read a book, spot wildlife through the binoculars or cook up a feast to eat on the expansive decks. Admire the changing scenery, stargaze after dark and enjoy the tranquillity, you won't see or even hear a car while on the property. Let the kids run wild in packs, making up imaginary games and exploring unsupervised. It is rare to find a place where there is no traffic to worry about. As adults we vividly remember those wonderful days of childhood freedom that kids rarely experience these days.

Sharing the view with the cattle!

An excellent property on the road to Cape Liptrap which, on a lovely day, you can see for miles across to the Prom. An unforgiving coastline otherwise! This turned out to be a comfortable property with all facilities - 2 couples - and everything went very smoothly! An excellent kitchen with large fridge, quality seating on decks front & rear, we enjoyed a few barbeques. Am unsure who was the most mystified or who had the better views, us or the cattle in the front paddock. Over the stiles we took a glorious walk in the old woodland which was a special treat. We visited Maitlands Beach which, at low tide, is another great walk. We included a visit to Bald Hills Wetlands & Sandy Point area & the nearby Walkerville Beach with its historical lime kilns & pioneer cemetery (watch out for the wombat!). Shellback has a converted garage for table tennis & games & I regret to say I neglected to include in my album a photo of my sister & I enjoying a little cup of tea in the cubbyhouse.- a very enjoyable stay all round!!

Shellback - a winter paradise

What a wonderful experience we had at Shellback. One glorious sunny day spent exploring The Prom, and 3 days taking shelter from a wet Gippsland winter. The fireplace was a perfect companion for the windswept vistas. The kids loved exploring the expansive property - their gumboots and wet weather gear were invaluable. And wildlife - my goodness - we saw Wombats Wallabies (and Joeys) Wedge-tailed Eagles Sea Eagles Kangaroos A big fox Emus Helped a turtle across the road (I’ve never been able to say that before) Lots of lambs And of course any number of coastal and wetland birds... We highly recommend Shellback

Fantastic Winter Getaway

Fantastic property and very comfortable and spacious house to be in for a weekend. Great presentation on arrival and everything there that we needed. Lovely furnishings in the living room and the space heated very easily so was lovely and cozy to be in colder months. Great views to the Prom and we enjoyed lots of local activities - food, walks and the rail trail. Our stay wasn’t long enough. We will be back for sure. Can highly recommend.

We loved our stay at Shellback it was beautiful

Shellback is the best, clean and tidy with everything you need even an ice maker. Could have done with some linen that was a bit of a hassle to have to bring but otherwise a very easy place to stay. Great walks, very quiet and peaceful. Loved the big kitchen and large space for everyone to enjoy. Beds are comfortable, the kitchen had everything you need, gardens and grounds are beautiful. We will be back for longer next time.

Picture perfect!

Highly recommended! The house is perfect for a family or group, well equipped and very comfortable. The fireplace kept us toast warm and the beds were comfy. The kitchen is great! The property itself is absolutely magical! We were lucky with nice sunny winter weather which gave us an opportunity to explore the beautiful gully. My daughter loved the cubby house - I can definitely imagine long warm evenings on the large veranda in summer! Location is also perfect for exploring nearby attractions, we fell in love with Walkerville South and spent a day at the Prom which is an easy drive away. Thanks so much for having us!

Just breathtaking

Shellback is one of those properties that you see on the map and think the location must be but a dream. Even the beautiful photos you see in the listing of the views can't prepare you for what you see in reality. The untainted and private views of Wilson's prom are staggering. They literally take your breath away. It seems as though the Prom is part of your own private back yard over acres and acres of treelined paddocks with gently roaming livestock and glass-like dams. Magnificent. And if that doesn't blow you away, the sky full of stars certainly will! Inside, the house is immaculate and you can see the owners have spared no expense, from the gourmet kitchen (I love to cook so this was a huge tick) to the stylish, quality furnishings, the bedding and drapery, everything was of the highest quality. And from every room of the gorgeous indoors, there was always the full view of Wilson's Prom, which seemed to belong exclusively to you. In a word or two Shellback is jaw-droppingly magical. Thank you for another amazing stay at another spectacular Dufflebird property!

A serene oasis; we can't wait to get back there!

Quite simply, this property is a jewel. The drive out there was the first indication that we'd found something unique...in the 20mins before you arrive, you'll see not a single house, car or person...just wide open land, stretching towards the ocean. And then you're there, and it's breathtaking. You can hardly believe this beautiful patch of land is yours. It's a rare kind of seclusion; the kind that rejuvenates the soul. The house is beautifully styled with a well stocked kitchen boasting top of the range appliances -- it's not roughing it by any stretch; this is a beautifully maintained house. With two separate wings coming off the open plan living area, there's the chance to both socialize and have your own space. We spent each morning on the deck looking out at the view over to Wilson's Promontory, hardly believing we'd found this little patch of paradise. Fleur and her team at Dufflebird have set up the house with information on various walking tracks and other local sites -- a touch that felt personal and proved to be a reliable guide in exploring the terrain. The canara kept us cosy, and was stocked with ample firewood. We measured the hours by the comings and goings of the resident sheep -- a luxury for folks like us who are wired to the pace of the city. Fleur herself is a genuine and reliable manager. The booking and preparation for our trip was a breeze -- we could not have been in better hands. This is a special place. A property that has to be experienced to understand how it feeds you. We would recommend it to anyone, but really we want it for ourselves! And just as a side note -- the carpet...so soft! It's in the little details that Shellback excels...the things you don't think about until they catch you by surprise and fill you with joy. Bliss. All we can say is thank you.

Fab Place all you need for an escape

All the stars I have given this property says it all really. Positioned beautifully on the coast with the feel of a farm stay. Nature at its best with the well appointed comforts of city living. Best bit was hanging on the deck and watching the hues of Wilsons Prom change the colour of the ocean..Wish I could keep it secret..

Best view ever!

This place is so wonderful. A cosy winter retreat with a really well thought out space. Will be back in summer to enjoy the beaches nearby. The view is amazing. Where it sits your vision is guided past rolling hills and forest to an overwhelming view on the prom. As the sun sets the proms changes colour - from green to orange to purple. At the end of the paddock is an amazing little forest you can walk through. Even in bad weather the place is great; watching squalls roll across the bay. The place is stocked with everything you need. Love it.

Gorgeous area

Many thanks...We had a lovely time in a fascinating part of Victoria . The privacy, views and surrounds are of course the highlight The house is very well equipped and we enjoyed the fire on a couple of the colder nights. The rental is on the high side but acceptable given Shellback's beauty ...and it was Easter high season . We would happily return as there is so much else to do in the area. We spent one day cycling on the rail trail and one day at Wilson's Prom and the other days around Cape Liptrap. ( walking to Hidden Beach was an adventure ) I really like the beauty of snakes so was sad not to see any but I suspect they were rugged up for the cold! We would certainly recommend Shellback . Fleur, we appreciated your excellent communication and contactability when we needed to sort anything .

Superb getaway

We stayed at Shellback with 3 friends who were visiting from Germany . It was perfect ! The house is squeaky clean , well designed , private , spacious , stylishly and tastefully furnished , extremely well presented and maintained , and very comfortable . The kitchen is state of the art ! And was great for several people helping together to prepare meals . I loved the quality , colourful, designer crockery ...in fact everything about the house was nice quality ! The huge deck with marvellous views was wonderful for long evening dinners and sunsets . In brief , great attention to every detail. The property managers , while not nearby , are very personable and very promptly responsive to any phone queries The property is ideal for a group , large family , or 3 generation family .

Great Escape

It was a complete getaway from our busy lives in Melbourne. Peaceful, tranquil with spectacular views of bush and ocean. The eagles were particularly amazing to watch soar above the property most evenings. My children and I also enjoyed the bush walk in the woods just down from the property and flying kites in the paddock. The property was very well equipped and immaculately kept. The lighthouse was just at the end of the road and at dusk we would go with a flask of tea and scones with the children to chew the cud! The nearby settlements are also very quaint with many craft shops and cafes with great coffee. We Particularly enjoyed Fish Creek which also has a lovey children's book shop where author Alison Lester, was autographing books. If you want rest and relaxation, then we highly recommend Shellback.

Wonderful!

We had a wonderful week at Shellback. We were looking for somewhere private and peaceful to get away from it all and it was perfect for this. The view of the water and surrounding countryside is beautiful and the sunrises and sunsets are amazing. The house was spotlessly clean when we arrived and incredibly well equipped. The kitchen is high quality and has everything you need - more than enough crockery, cutlery and utensils. We planned well and took several pre-cooked meals and plenty of food so we only needed to visit the supermarket in Foster (about half an hour away) once and that was because some friends came for lunch at the last minute. We brought our bikes and the kids did a lot of riding around the property. We also rode to the lighthouse which was a really nice ride (about 20 minutes each way). We liked Walkerville South beach which is only a few minutes away by car. We also visited the Prom and Squeaky Beach. We could hear a koala occasionally throughout our stay and finally saw it on the last day in a tree behind the shed. We could not fault anything about Shellback. Highly recommend!!

Do yourself a favour and stay here!

We stayed for four magical nights two adults with two kids 4 and under. The weather was overcast, windy and rainy but we still had the best time. Its a short drive to explore beaches, nearby walks and Wilsons Prom itself. Or you can explore the property itself. We even discovered Koala in the trees behind the woodshed. The house itself is well laid out, the kitchen was well stocked with items to make your stay easy and having a laundry was super handy. Looking forward to visiting again.

Beautifully presented with stunning views!

My husband, my mother and myself stayed at this beautiful property a few weeks ago. Upon arriving we were greeted by the stunning view of the prom out the window and the brand new furniture in the living area - we thought they were tastefully chosen and complemented the house very well. The owners obviously have a keen sense of style! We also loved the quality provisions throughout the house - the cutlery and the crockery were among our favourites. Will definitely return and recommend to family and friends!

Beautiful

We stayed for 4 nights late October. The property had everything you could need plus lots of little things (e.g. glad wrap, coffee, long life milk). There were only the two of us but the property would also suit a family (we only used half the house). It's in a picturesque location but you need to take everything with you because it's quite a drive to the shops. Would happily recommend the property.

Beautiful and tranquil with stunning views!!

Shellback Cottage really is as good as it sounds! It's very tranquil and private and provided us with a beautiful and relaxing weekend. The Cottage was in immaculate condition when we arrived - it even smelt divine!! We were able to relax and enjoy our space and go for walks on the property. And it was also an easy drive to a lot of other places that were fun to visit. We are definitely going to be return visitors and have already recommended it to friends and family. Thanks Shellback for a totally lovely weekend!!

My husband Mike and I have always shared a sideways way of looking at things.

We have always gravitated towards one-a-kind things and places. This and our love of travel led to us buying an intriguing cabin back in 2005.

That cabin, Liptrap Loft became a success, won a few awards and a lot of hearts. Some friends then asked us to manage their place nearby. From there our side hustle somehow morphed into full time small business: Dufflebird - Unique Getaways for The Curious.

Today we offer a bespoke collection of charming, homely and dearly-loved properties for easy holiday rental.

Six Regional properties within a 2.25 hour radius of Melbourne. Three properties belong to us and the other three piqued our interest with their uniqueness - something special.

We think each property is a destination in its own right. bespoke, curated and nourishing. We find the longer guests stay the more value they seem to feel they get. Our ideal customers are looking for more than a bed for the night.

Our happiest guests are attracted to unusual places, artistic details and a slick process. We find this individual approach attracts guests that are respectful and grateful to the house and the cleaners.
