About Dave Bachman

My day job is an enginner for a major IT company, while my hobby is historic home renovation. I am married and we live in the Washington DC area with our 2 children.

I grew up in Pennsylvania, and I love the Laurel Highlands.

Dave Bachman purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Dave Bachman chose Somerset

The atmosphere and setting of this property is breathtaking. It is very close to the resorts and other attractions in the Laurel Highlands, but is an attraction onto itself.

What makes this cabin unique

-Beautiful setting among the stream and woodlands.

- Trail leads directly into state park; makes for great hike or morning jog

- 1 mile/5 min to ski resort. Easy for skiers and nonskiers

-Walk to resturaunt with good food and great prices

- The atomsphere at sunset during the summer on the stone patio and firepit with a nice glass of wine with friends is priceless.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We found the cottage to be right out of a storybook! The sound of the babbling brook outside our window was so soothing that we never closed the windows. While other properties we looked at we're larger, they all paled in comparison to the charm and attention to detail. The kitchen was extremely well equipped, and the high end adjustable Sleep Number mattress was o so comfortable and not something found find in most rentals. While having vintage charm, the cottage was thoroughly up to date where and the craftsmanship is wonderful. We enjoyed every minute of it, from the creek side patio and outdoor firepit, to eating breakfast in the great room with all the windows open and hearing the stream and birds, to the private hiking trails The area offers so many things to do - we thoroughly enjoyed a tour of Fallingwater and great dining options, too (The Out of the Fire Cafe is now our favorite restaurant). In short, the cottage was everything it promised to be and we can't wait to come back!

Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a great weekend ski getaway at Hidden Valley and were so lucky to find this gem, which is located only a few minutes away from the slopes. What an amazing view of the stream out the back, so peaceful and relaxing. We hope to return this summer!

Quaint cabin, beautiful area, convenient location

  • 4 of 5

We overall enjoyed our anniversary weekend getaway. Skiing was great at Hidden Valley. The snow made getting out of the driveway, even at the restaurant (although they cleared the lot quickly) a little challenging. We heard some traffic from the highway. The wood stove was really nice. There is no cable TV so we were almost unable to watch the Superbowl! However, my husband thought to bring the Amazon fire box and HDMI cable, so he saved the day.

Clean, comfortable home and spectacular property

  • 5 of 5

This is our second visit and we plan to come back again and again! The house has everything you need for a relaxing vacation. The Great room is our favorite spot in the house. We basically live in that room during our stay. There is a large dining room table that is perfect for games, puzzles and feasts; plenty of comfortable couches and chairs for napping and reading and you are surrounded by windows looking out over the creek, fire pit and tree covered hills. We LOVE the wood stove in that room the most and will really miss it once it is replaced with the gas fireplace. That won’t stop us from coming though! The house has everything you need and is very clean! Dave, the owner, is great to work with. He responds to your questions/needs immediately. We can’t wait until our next trip back to Sylvania Lodge! Thanks for another fantastic vacation!

Great place, great host

  • 5 of 5

Loved the cabin. Very nice features- fire pit, grill, creek, bedrooms, kitchen, TV, great room - all were perfect.

Very close to the road and to a restaurant as noted in other reviews, but the back yard gave the perception of seclusion and peace.

Dave was very responsive and a pleasure to rent from.

Fantastic property, great host

  • 5 of 5

The lodge was beautiful, in very good shape, with everything that we needed. Even in the winter, it the heating and hot water worked well. Dave was a great host and was very helpful in providing information for everything in the lodge and also stopped by to shovel the driveway.
