Location was great—near stores and restaurants but still quiet and beautifully surrounded by nature. Of note, there is a railroad and we hear train daily a couple times a day and during the night. That woke us up most nights in some of the rooms but not the basement area. Bring ear plugs if that bothers you.

Very nice stay. The pool is amazing and the setting is very secluded despite being ten minutes from any service you may want. The staff was very responsive and very nice.

We so enjoyed our time at Brookwood, we were ages 2-70, there was plenty of space to play, talk or play games together and many delightful spots to be alone to soak up the beauty, think or journal.We used the big table not only for family meals but also much art time, this home inspires creativity. AND THE POOL! We all enjoyed a swim or two each day. One night while star gazing we saw the International Space Station fly by. This home is a place to make treasured memories.
On a little explore.
This home is a feast for the eyes.
Relaxing and beautiful.
Off to bed.

Boone’s Mill

We loved the surroundings and the pool. At one time during our week, we had 10 adults and 2 three year olds. There was always plenty of room for everybody. Driving toward Roanoke, there is a good choice of restaurants. Shannon was quick to respond to any questions. We would definitely return. Coming from South Carolina, the trip up to the house is quite harrowing, only to be done in the daylight to be safe.

Like an Italian Villa

This property looks and feels like an Italian villa - or what I imagine one to be. The house and grounds are fabulous- spacious, beautiful, peaceful. Everything you need is at your fingertips. We especially loved the enormous pool and the babbling creek beyond. There is original artwork at every turn and the mismatched dining chairs and plates give the place a bohemian feel. Kudos to Natalie and Shannon for asking any question we had immediately. Despite the feel of being in the country, Roanoke is only 10 minutes away with tons of good restaurants, walking and biking trails, activities and a selection of food shopping options. Also, the Blue Ridge Mountains offer a wide variety of hiking trails. We hope to return!

Awesome stay

This is one of the best vacation rentals I've stayed at. The listing and pictures are accurate. The house is well cared for and well stocked. The view was great. Pool clean and great, even for their second week of pool season. Takes a little drive(30 minutes or so) for many of the hikes but not a huge deal. We would definitely recommend and come back.

spacious comfort

our family of 10, from ages 15 to 80, had such a pleasant week at Brookwood house. Unfortunately, it rained every day. however, we usually found some time to be able to use the lovely pool. The accommodations were very spacious for all of us to be together in one room or we could find plenty of areas for some quiet alone time as well. It is a beautiful house with a most interesting decor.

We had a great time at the Beautiful Brookwood Estate. We had 4 under 5 and they all had a great time the pool and creek were wonderful. There are a lot of things to do around Roanoke with littles and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip !!

Beautiful and relaxing hide away

Just outside the city and minutes from everything there is a gem of a home. It’s tucked into the mountains and sitting along a beautiful bold creek. We had family in town visiting and booked Brookwood and we were in no way disappointed. Beautiful home, beautiful setting and an excellent host. 10/10 recommended!!!

Just Lovely

The Brookwood House offers my family and me an almost magical experience. This marks our third consecutive year visiting Brookwood. The setting itself is unique, surrounded by nature that “sings” to us songs from the babbling brook and birds, and occasional bullfrog. The large pool offers plenty of built-in fun for my family, and this week my five-year-old granddaughter even added “swimmer” to her growing set of skills, a particular delight to our bank of family Brookwood memories! The structure itself has plenty of space, allowing us family gatherings, as well as “step-away” moments for personal rest and recharging. The house has a “home-like” sensation for my family that is an additional asset to this vacation jewel, and the outdoor spaces, including two porches with swings, allow my adult kids and me, a combination of city-dwellers and suburbanites, to embrace God’s gifts from nature fully. We enjoy this place where thoughtful architecture engages natural beauty, and highly recommend Brookwood House.

Beautiful Escape!

What an absolutely amazing vacation house! The house was stunning, with unique architecture and quirks. We loved exploring all of the different rooms and the artwork hung about. The house offered plenty of space for our families to gather together and even allowed us to all sit together for dinners at the large dining table. The kitchen was fully stocked with various cooking utensils and baking items as well as spices and cooking oils. The pantry also had an array of items you may need from batteries to first aid kits. The covered patio off the dining room was a great place to relax and listen to the creek flow…and watch the occasional thunderstorm roll in! By far the best part of the property was the extremely large pool-it was not only beautifully maintained but provided us all space to float and the kids to play at the same time! It was so awesome to hear the creek and be able to be in nature while cooling off! Lastly, but not least, Natalie, the caretaker, was such a joy! While admittedly we thought it was a bit strange to have someone on property, after meeting her, those thoughts went away. She was incredibly kind and sweet. She answered our few questions we had and asked us before she came over to check a breaker. She truly was wonderful! With the exception of her fixing the breaker per our request, we barely saw her and had our privacy. We’ll certainly be back!

My Husband’s 70th Birthday Celebration

We chose The Brookwood House as the Mecca for a special celebration for my sweet husband’s 70th birthday! The architecturally interesting house, the expansive pool and cabana area, and the very private Creekside location provided the perfect backdrop for our festivities. We had a wonderful time with our kids, our sons-in-law, and our grandchildren from Sunday to Wednesday early afternoon. Then the rest of the time through early Sunday morning, the two of us leisurely explored the area on our own. We enjoyed the Pinball Museum in Roanoke with our sons before they left as well as Market Square downtown. We also meandered through a lovely part of Skyline Drive, and did a forty five minute drive to have lunch at the Los Amigos Marina on part of Smith Mountain Lake. Gorgeous area. Don’t miss the Mellow Mushroom in Roanoke for a great Greek Salad or pizza, Scratch Biscuits for Breakfast, the Outback for a delectable and very reasonable filet mignon, and Katie’s Ice Cream for dessert. The whole family enjoyed the huge swimming pool, and the “resident” card and board games came in handy at night. One son-in-law and teen grandson really enjoyed fishing along Crystal Creek. We could watch them from the outdoor screened porch or in the seating cluster by the upstairs family room window where we assembled most often. Last but not least, we loved the Master Suite; the view is truly mesmerizing. Thank you to Natalie for being so accommodating and responsive the few times we had questions.

Magical Vacation

Our adult children and their families all came at various points during the week to stay at Brookwood with us. From the moment we entered the door we were enchanted by the beauty ,artistry, and thoughtfully designed spaces for quiet and for connection. From the air hockey table to the 'secret room', to exploring the creek- our grandchildren were inspired and hooked! The adults loved the books, stereo system, ambiance, art, and the vision of Brookwood. The beds were super comfortable, and the kitchen had everything we needed and more.

Brookwood House June 4th-11th 2023

The property was very beautiful! We had a wonderful time and hope to come back someday. It was just 3 adults and 1 kid, we were supposed to have more people, but they had a medical emergency to tend to so we had a huge home all to ourselves! We have relatives in the area so we had them over a couple times for swimming and dining. Don't hesitate and book this place, you will not regret it! If i could give it 100 stars, their is no question that I would.

Girls Vacation

Property was as listed. Very large and decorated with much art. Enjoyed noticing something new everyday. We looked up the history of the property and thought it would be nice for the owners to have this available for visitors to read. Not convenient for cooking out at the pool and no table and chairs around the pool. There are lounge chairs and wicker chairs around the pool. Home is beautiful and very peaceful environment.

Brookwood House is owner operated with a team of professionals who truly enjoy hosting guests from all over while you create memorable experiences.
I the owner, Adam am an architect, builder, sculptor and energy geek. In 1984 I moved to Floyd County,Virginia, where I designed and built in the Roanoke, Floyd and New River Valley area. I was co-owner of Structures Design/Build until I sold it several years ago. I have designed and built hundreds of homes for other folks. Brookwood is the fourth home I designed and built with my wife and life partner, Elizabeth.

The feeling we were striving for at Brookwood is one of relaxation, comfort and safety.
At the time we built I had 40+ employees and was working 7 days a week with no vacations,
I designed and built Brookwood to be a refuge and healing space. When I got home, I
wanted “instant calm and comfort”. We have certainly found the Brookwood “aura” to be this way. In the last 10 years, I have become a leader in the international Passivhaus movement, which is a cutting-edge technology for low energy high performance buildings.

The knowledge I have is now being sought after all over the world. This has led my wife and to relocate to Toronto, where I am acting as an educator for a Canadian Non-Profit promoting Passivhaus on the national level. I was also chosen for a 3-year Edmund Hillary Fellowship in 2018 in New Zealand as a Global Impact Entrepreneur and have just been awarded a permanent designation as an Edmund Hillary Fellow. So, Elizabeth and I have chosen to share Brookwood with others, so Welcome to Brookwood!
