IdleWild is a 1978 beach house on five private acres of dunes and native garden, thirty seconds from Nine Mile Beach.
Inside, it is a genuine period piece: original mid-century furniture and lighting, vintage pure cotton sheets (always ironed), a wood fire for winter and a plumbed outdoor bath under the sky.
The whole house and all five acres are solely yours. It is priced for two — and your dog is very welcome, with a full fenced acre to patrol.
The space First, full transparency: IdleWild is a small, original 1978 beach shack, only three owners including us.
The kitchen and bathroom are modern (2017) and entirely functional; almost everything else is the real thing, collected piece by piece: the daybed, the lamps, the crockery, even the linen down to the teatowels.
If a glass-and-concrete new build is your thing, we are not it. But if a 1970s house with its original character, twenty-five metres from the high-tide line, tugs … then welcome home.
There are three bedrooms — a king (zip), a queen and a double, all with mattress toppers and black out curtains. A bathroom with shower, a second separate toilet, and a laundry.
The proper cook’s kitchen has a dishwasher, oven, automatic coffee machine and a pantry we keep stocked: coffee beans, Twinings tea, hot chocolate, muesli, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, flour for pancakes.
Outside: the deck with its electric barbecue and that view — rolling surf, Great Oyster Bay, the Hazards; the outdoor bath, fully plumbed, best at dusk with a candle; a wood stove inside with all the firewood you can burn; and vintage bikes for the ride up the beach to the oyster shack.
A 50-inch smart TV with Netflix and Apple, a Bose speaker, books and games for the weather Tasmania will occasionally send you.
A note on pricing IdleWild is priced for two guests, with the whole house included. The second and third bedrooms are there if you want them — additional guests are charged per person, per night, up to six in total.
Guest access While you are here, IdleWild and its five acres are solely yours. The property is fenced (with some holes since the December 25 fires), with a further one-acre fence around the house so your dog can play safely off the lead. Cats, canaries..all welcome too.
Nine Mile Beach is exactly as long as its name suggests, and you will likely have it to yourself. Take the bikes along the sand — you can ride all the way to Melshells Oyster Shack and back.
The garden is full of native plants and birdsong; wallabies skip across the dunes at dusk, and you will certainly hear the possums who will sometimes pay the upper deck a night time courtesy call.
Food and wine nearby Freshly shucked oysters at Melshell’s caravan, a bike ride up the beach. In Swansea – Barkmills, Saltshaker and the Horny Cray. Many of the local wineries do seasonal pop up food – check their websites - Craigie Knowe were doing fantastic food sumer 2025. But it’s a fluid situation so to speak…
Freycinet National Park is thirty minutes for the Wineglass Bay walk, or the scramble up Mount Amos if you have earned your dinner. And do not forget the quietly epic Friendly Beaches.
Other things to note The house is small and much loved, and we look after it ourselves — the sheets are vintage pure cotton and yes, we iron them. It suits guests who enjoy something a bit off the beaten track.
There are exterior security cameras (outside only). The nearest shop is ten minutes away in Swansea, so bring supplies for your first night. Check-in is self-service via key safe.
IdleWild… idle a while in the wild.

Charming house nestled among the dunes, with views across to Freycinet. We loved riding bikes along the beach and building driftwood shacks, then sinking into the retro couches to play board games and listen to music tapes. The kitchen was very well equipped, and it’s the perfect place to slow down and switch off. Clean and kid friendly Thanks very much Amelia Scotty
Lovely quirky little place right on the beach front. The weather was cold, wet and windy so it was a great spot to bunker down in, play board games and cook in front of the fire.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Loved the location, property was clean, well appointed and as described. Especially loved being able to have our Labradors join us. Excellent communication from Amelia - we would definitely stay again.

Great views from upstairs with a lovely path to the beach. House was very well equipped and clean. We all loved our stay and enjoyed the short visit from writer Nicholas Shakespeare.

Thank you Debra, so delighted that you and your family had a great time in Tassie!
Enjoyed our stay at Dolphin Sands. Our host was easy to communicate with and checkin went very smoothly. Facilities were great with fluff white towels fully equipped kitchen including a good selection of knives (a rare find in holiday rentals) and quality crockery and appliances. Felt to us like a home away from home. Highly recommended!
IdleWild was perfect for us. One of the main reasons we selected it for our anniversary celebrations was because it was dog friendly. The place was clean and well organised, so close to the beach and fully fenced. We will definitely be coming back here again in the future. I will be highly recommending this place to family and friends, it was awesome!

Thank you Andrew for your lovely review and we did appreciate the immaculate house you left us!!
Fantastic view and so peaceful, it was a shame to leave. The house was very nice, modern kitchen and bathroom, but we found that the furniture was a bit old and uncomfortable.

Thanks Ian for your review. I'm sorry about the feeling of the furniture. The beds and mattresses are new but yes the sofa upstairs is about 5 years old and the other furniture is genuine mid century to create the cosy atmospshere in the house that i have put cushions on but maybe need to be re-upholstered!
The property was exactly as we expected, it was comfortable, cosy and in the best location. The kitchen was well equipped, big tv was great with a number of streaming services available, nice to have a fire. The bed was amazingly comfortable and very welcome after a late arrival. However the best part was the absolute beach front location - beautiful.

Hi Jennie, so delighted that you enjoyed your stay. I am obsessed with comfy beds and good sleep so loved that you appreciated them! Thanks also for leaving the house so clean. Best, Amelia
We loved getting away from everything at IdleWild. Nestled in the dunes with magnificent views, the 70's beach shack was perfectly quirky, cozy and comfortable. Having bikes to ride along the beach at low tide was so much fun. Suited us perfectly. Thankyou.
What a wonderful stay we had at Idle Wild. The house is extremely well set up with everything you needs. The beds were super comfy and made it easy to drift off to sleep with the sound of the waves in the background. The beach bikes were a great touch and allowed us to keep up with our dog as she galloped up and down the beach. Access to games, wifi and streaming services were also welcomed and easy to keep teenagers entertained.
Thank you so much for our wonderful stay.

So delighted that you enjoyed yourselves and thanks for the lovely review.
Classic tas shack with a priceless vista, functional and well equipped kitchen, Huon Valley crumpets, cosy and warm space, beach bikes and nine miles of beach. Nothing to fault, no way to improve. Loved every bit of it.

So happy that you had a lovely weekend and thank you Tim for your generous comments and also for leaving the house so clean - much appreciated.
Once again we had a fabulous stay at Idle Wild. Wild and woolly weather on one day kept us inside but fully entertained with lots of games and streaming services. Good excuse to have a cosy fire as well. On other days we enjoyed the beach and magnificent views. One of my favourite things to do (ever) is to ride one of the beach bikes while our dog, Liza, runs beside, leaping in and out of the waves. Thanks again for a wonderful stay!

Why they chose this property
Bought this property in January 2022 for an occasional escape. I fell head over heels with the wild majesty of its setting in a natural dune garden right on the beach. I never thought we could be so lucky as to find such a special place.
And places such as these must be shared!
What makes this property unique
Although the property is very private and very wild feeling, it is actually not that remote and close to Swansea for amenities and lots of lovely lunch and dinner options nearby in the wineries and at Piermont.
Add to that the Freycinet National Park on your doorstop and you cannot ask for much more!
