The vacation that never happened
Our vacation was abruptly aborted less than 24 hours before arrival. The cottage had been double booked and we were notified that priority would be given to the other guests as they had booked first. I was shocked that this could happen. I had communicated with the host 2 days prior to our arrival date and absolutely no indication was given that there were any issues. We were left to fend for ourselves. VRBO and our host seemed to be arguing over who was to blame leaving us in the dust. Apparently the unit was offered on both VRBO and Air B and B and the calendars were not synced. VRBO would not assist us until after 'what would have been' our check-in time and our host insisted this was a VRBO issue and not his fault. Eventually after several phone calls to VRBO they told us we could try to find something through Expedia, however this was not possible as we were a family of 6 limited to a small area and a strict timeline and nothing was available. Luckily we were able to stay with relatives before our departure back home. Eventually our money was refunded, but not until the host and VRBO were able to resolve who was responsible between them. Our time away with family was ruined.
